Don’t know why I hate i?! Does anyone else?

I shower on working days (3 x per week) and if meeting up with friends etc, but if i’m off for a while, I don’t, is that gross? I could easily go a week if only doing school drop off and food shop, dog walks

I’m not a shower fan but I love a bath and it’s the highlight of most days.

regularlatte · 13/11/2025 19:14

Also nothing to do with size, I don’t think.

I am very small and don’t have many rolls or creases and I still get sticky.

MoonWoman69 · 13/11/2025 19:15

In the last year I've become exactly the same! And I don't know why either! I do get a wash in between but I can go a good few days without a shower!

I could have written this.
I hate being hot then cold and wet and all the faff.
I used to just dive uner a duvet when i was younger and stay there until i was dry, i never realised i was overwhelmed until thinking about it now.
And ive always had long hair, so drying that too is just exhausing.
I shower at night and go to bed with wet hair when ive got a morning appointment and i absolutely have to or work in the morning.
I was always shamed that i was lazy.

Yes I also could have written this. Have always hated it and it never occurred to me until very recently that this wasn’t normal and why that might be.

Coldsoap · 13/11/2025 19:18

I do a sink wash daily, shower 1-2 times a week. Wash hair once a week. Currently have an airer in my shower, I'd probably shower more if it was less faff to sort that out and also I prefer to shower at night but it risks waking the baby.

NewsdeskJC · 13/11/2025 19:18

I hate showering with a passion. Hate the feeling of water pounding on my skin. In the summer I will sometimes have a shower using the wand thing. Hate water running over my face and dripping in my eyes
I have a bath 3 or 4 times a week and chuck a flannel around in between times.
I don't feel or look dirty and I don't smell.

Specialcrumpets · 13/11/2025 19:18

Hmmm I hate transitions, as you describe them, too. I sometimes sit in bed before getting up for hours, even though I’m starving and want a cup of tea, because I just don’t want to do it. However, I don’t think I am ND…..

If you’re a skin therapist, surely you know that this is not true for most people. It’s not showering that’s bad, it’s how you do it. Normal hygiene and daily showering does not harm skin the health of skin. It removes oils and impurities (and odour) and can help support the skin if it is done properly.

For people like me who have normal skin, it is just fine. I moisturise my whole body after a shower, but that’s mostly for the enjoyment of it rather than a skin issue.

Dry or sensitive skin people can still usually shower daily, but use products and water temperatures that suit them.

If you google it, all the expert sources say that showering daily isn't good for your skin. Weirdly, water is drying. That's why we need to use conditioner on our hair. Of course, people who work a physical job or exercise hard every day might need to. But as the Beeb article I linked pointed out, we shower daily as a social norm, not because most of us actually need to.

SoftBalletShoes · 13/11/2025 19:29

With the climate crisis, maybe we should all shower less and channel the 18th century by using perfume to mask the smell! We already have hair powder, in the popular use of dry shampoo.

Movinginthesunlight · 13/11/2025 19:30

Whats all this sink washing about? I thought that was something my grandparents did back in the day. It seems messy, cold, pointless and time consuming. Just get in the shower.

All the people that dont shower every day and say they dont smell are deluded. You do. If you are using the loo and have cervices like we all do then you do smell. Sweat (whether you think you Sweat or not, everyone does) builds up in creases, and you will have tiny bits of waste around your privates as dry tissue doesn't clean you properly, not even close.

Believe me you do smell, as im constantly getting whiffs of dirty bodies when people walk past in public or sit near me!

I find the concept of a 'sink wash' so interesting, to me it's such a quaint antiquated thing people did in the olden days when they didn't have the water to waste!

The idea of going to the trouble of getting naked, filling a sink, and carefully just washing certain areas, then drying them, either having water running down your dry legs or getting soaked anyway, seems like such a humongous faff and much, much more difficult than just getting in the bloomin' shower and out again. What's the benefit?

SoldOutAgain · 13/11/2025 19:31

People who have a sink/flannel/strip wash, which ‘bits’ are you washing? Do you wash your genital areas too? And if you do, how do you do it without splashing water everywhere?

I’m just being nosy and curious ;-) It just sounds more of a hassle than a three minute body wash in the shower!

Edited

There was a time when I lived really close to work, and I used to have a bath every morning and, decadently, eat my breakfast and drink my tea in the bath! I never told anyone about this, because they had long commutes. And you don't want people knowing about such a luxury routine! 🤭

Those days are over now, but they were good for the short time they lasted!

I think you are getting a lot of the "I shower everyday" comments on here OP compared to reality. Like the I change my bedsheets every day. I actually do mine weekly, routine maybe I like freshly washed clothes.

Personally I hate showering and like you do it only when necessary work, friends, sex etc. I have always detested it so much so that as a child I would put the shower on, but not get in it, so my parents thought I was showering. A sensory issue I definately think. Funny thing is I like swimming, I used to live in a hot country and we had a pool I swam every day in the warm weather. Loved it. To all the MN's thinking how disgusting they were chlorine pools (you just put the chemicals in and it sorted pH etc) only 4 people swam in it and we drained in once a year. No one died if anything my immune system is too strong hypothyroid, cursing myself here but I have not had a cold/Flu for 20 years. I did get Covid once, not badly I put that down to the lifts on a cruise ship we were on. I did mention it and they did something so the doors stayed open longer. Not sure that really fixed it as just lead to a lift pile up.

I dont really get the obsession with showering. I hate it. Also we have a severe water shortage due to climate change. I have never met anyone who died from not showering daily. It strips your skin of oils you can try to mitigate by using pH neutral soaps. I know when I smell I don't sweat much I walk every day for hours, dogs, but don't run.

I do wash my face with water and brush my teeth religiously 2 x a day. Plus wash and moisturise my hands. I cannot not do this which takes me back to the sensory issue. I really only shower before sex, my partner is the same, so we decide to do the deed then I shower then, he does whilst I am perfuming, maybe putting underwear on. Call me disgusting if you like. I have a degree in pharmacy so am germ aware. If I had no sex life God knows what would happen.

PollyBell · 13/11/2025 19:33

I hate it but yes I do it it is easier to do it then think about it

@SoldOutAgain and @DarkPassenger1 I use flushable wipes for the swimsuit area, and I wash my underarms with soap and water. The water is running. It's definitely quicker than a shower!

Showering is overrated.
I have a strip wash every morning.
I shower and wash my hair twice a week.
Might also have a lovely warm and relaxing bath if I have got tired and cold.

Thanks for the answer. The environmental impact of wipes makes me flinch a bit, but I can see how that’s quick! Doesn’t the armpit water run all over the floor though?!

cuppacat · 13/11/2025 19:35

I'm with you OP. Ablutions are not fun - such a drag and there are many other things I would rather be doing! I shower and wash my hair every other day and sometimes every third day if I'm not going anywhere or feeling lazy! I will use some dry shampoo on these days. I'm more partial to a nice hot flannel wash - showing my age perhaps!

Surely it would be just as quick and easy (if not quicker and easier) to have a quick shower rather than a strip wash?

blackheartsgirl · 13/11/2025 19:38

I have to psych myself up for a shower or bath mostly.

also ADHD. I do prefer a bath, I grew up in a house without a shower and have only had a shower in the house I am now so a bath is my go to really.

only wash my thick, very long hair once a week.

But yes even though I have to force myself in the shower or bath I still do and I rarely miss a week day. I didn’t have one yesterday as I’ve literally had no time, head all over the place and as I do a physical job I get very hot and sweaty. Tbh I felt grim today at work and I’m sure I stank, and I’ve come straight home and jumped in the bath

YorkshireLass2012 · 13/11/2025 19:38

I shower and wash my hair every morning and have a quick hot shower before bed. If I go to the gym, I will also shower straight after. So up to three times in a day. If I miss any of these I don’t feel comfortable.

Soosi · 13/11/2025 19:38

Did anyone ever consider how much water was being used during tbe water shortage/hosepipe ban. Just asking.

Pricelessadvice · 13/11/2025 19:39

I couldn’t have a shower for 24 hours a few weeks back as I had to have a hospital procedure that involved being wired up.
I felt so dirty and gross.

Surely it’s quicker to jump in the shower for 3 minutes than all this sink-washing stuff? My non-hair wash days are super fast. Jump in the shower, nice wash with shower wash all over and a good rinse. I’m back out and getting dried within a few minutes.
