Our school has banned the word Christmas?

Fayethefair · 09/11/2025 09:30

I’ve heard from a friend on my DD’s school’s ptfa that our Cambridgeshire school has banned the word Christmas to make the school events feel more inclusive. So now it’s Festive Party, Festive Fayre etc. I’m happy to let mumsnet know the name of the school if they don’t feel this post is genuine so they can check this themselves but I won’t put names on here as this is my child’s school, I just don’t think this right and want to see what others think.

My daughter attended a Diwali lunch put on by the school recently and I genuinely thought this was lovely. I feel everything should be represented equally, I don’t understand or agree that the head should be picking and choosing what’s allowed and what isn’t. Surely this isn’t right?

🙄

Completely agree, all the gammons could at least have the decency to wait til after 11 November out of RESPECT for ARE VETERENS, right?

Yes. I would like to know the name of this school that insults and berates Christianity.... By pretending Christmas doesn't exist!

You do know Christmas is a pagan festival originally? 🤣

ExtraOnions · 09/11/2025 10:26

I’m pretty sure Christmas isn’t banned …

… hurry up, Mass will be about to start at Church, and you don’t want to be late - I can see how important your Christian religion is to you.

I’m surprised at the amount of committed Christians on here tbh. And on Remembrance Sunday too.

If your church is more concerned about not offending jumble sale customers by dumbing down its deeply Christian theological mission it may as well shut up shop. The idea of a thriving church is to serve its community and explain why God’s hope and love is at the heart of that service.

I have the same message for school leaders and governors who go down this cultural whitewashing in the name of ‘inclusion’ and ‘not offending’. There is nothing offensive about children learning the nativity story in a country that it is culturally and institutionally Christian (even if not religiously). To say they’ll ban or diminish it for spurious mob-pleasing reasons makes them look thick, bigoted and scared. Not somewhere I’d want to send my children to be educated quite frankly.

Exactly this. Christians are not allowed to complain though. They must all be good little people, and take all the shit, and the denying of the word CHRISTMAS, and people trying to deny it in a CHRISTIAN country.

The insults are already coming from the right-on far left. You just couldn't make it up😆

No, you don't get to say that. If we're going to ban CHRISTMAS, (because it's not 'inclusive') then why not ban all the words from other religions too.

You have clearly got no answer to that, judging by your ridiculous response to me. Once again, Christians take a battering, but no other religion does. Go figure........

Battered CHRISTMAS (to quote your shouting) sounds like a Scottish treat. Perhaps one you like to gorge on. If you can't see why potentially two months of events linked to "Christmas" might not be inclusive there's not much hope for you. Fingers crossed you can relax a little more and reflect this coming holiday season.

DressOrSkirt · 09/11/2025 10:29

Zov · 09/11/2025 10:19

Of course they don't sound more festive than Christmas! Hmm

The events sound more festive (a party and a fayre) than Christmassy (eg a nativity or mass).

Piggywaspushed · 09/11/2025 10:29

On the subject of the US , they have never not done this. The standard US greeting is Happy Holidays and they refer to the Holiday Season. Hence the Coca Cola song.

This does not stop people from celebrating Christmas.

No. CHRISTMAS works just fine thanks. It will NOT be going away, despite far left councils trying to ban it from schools. Such a repugnant thing to do.

PandoraSocks · 09/11/2025 10:30

I saw in the papers today that Charles is no longer going to broadcast a Christmas message. It is going to be rebranded a "Winterval" message and no mention of Christmas allowed to avoid offending non-Christians.

What is happening to are country?

OneAmberFinch · 09/11/2025 10:30

This whole thread is 90% people falling over themselves to say there is no attempt whatsoever to remove mention of Christmas while also approvingly recommending that events, even ones held in literal Christian churches (?!) should call themselves winter craft fayres... Make it make sense.

Personally I think more outrage should go towards those who call them fayres instead of fairs... they ABVU

JifNtGif · 09/11/2025 10:19

It's non INCLUSIVE! (Shouting as you are shouting)

So are Eid and Diwali, but if anyone suggested renaming either to make them more ‘inclusive’ they’d be accused of racism.

Because no one is banning christmas. OP has got half a story from her mate and from this has concluded that the word Christmas has been banned. There is nothing, even within the half a story which even indicates that it has.

You’re now jumping on a wrong bandwagon which is taking you to who knows where but it’s making you very angry and shouty. Wherever you’re heading it’s a very long way from reality.

user5687921 · 09/11/2025 10:32

Maybe the school should have an all-parents meeting to try to teach the difference between re-naming an event and 'banning' a word? What happens to those who slip and violate the ban? Exclusion? Tarring and Feathering?

My God, the inhumanity of calling it the Winter Fayre (or whatever). As a Christian, things like this make me feel so persecuted on a daily basis, I can hardly cope.

ExtraOnions · 09/11/2025 10:32

Gallowayan · 09/11/2025 10:16

I find it believable and these things can be verified

Years ago Birmingham City Council adopted the term "Winterval" (Ouch)to replace "Christmas"in case the use of the word Christmas caused offence.

The “winterval” myth has been debunked so many times over the years

The council did not ban the word “Christmas” so people were not offended. They were planning a programme of events that went beyond the usual “Christmas” dates, and so gave the whole programme a different name (such as happens with Winter Wonderland)

See this explanation / apology published by The Mail:

A previous version of this article stated that Christmas has been renamed in various places Winterval. Winterval was the collective name for a season of public events, both religious and secular, which took place in Birmingham in 1997 and 1998. We are happy to make clear that Winterval did not rename or replace Christmas.

It has never replaced the word “Christmas”

Nobody is banning Christmas. Calm down dear. Its time for you to be at Mass, no? Jesus would not have approved of all this hatemongering; He welcomed everyone, and would not have cared a hoot about this nonsense. The message is love, not division. Amen.

Tiswa · 09/11/2025 10:33

Not using Christmas as the start of a fair isn’t the same as banning it though is it? You can still say Christmas at the fair they may even have some Christmas bits alongside the other festive things

agree with @Piggywaspushed the US is all Happy Holidays - Disney have a Festival of Holidays but still have Santa and a Christmas Show

LeavesTrees · 09/11/2025 10:33

I worked in a school that banned the word Christmas, infact they weren’t allowed to do anything even slightly Christmassy - but it was because the school was located in a multicultural area and the pupils were predominantly Muslim, although it was not a faith school. Is your school similar?
