Our school has banned the word Christmas?

Fayethefair · 09/11/2025 09:30

I’ve heard from a friend on my DD’s school’s ptfa that our Cambridgeshire school has banned the word Christmas to make the school events feel more inclusive. So now it’s Festive Party, Festive Fayre etc. I’m happy to let mumsnet know the name of the school if they don’t feel this post is genuine so they can check this themselves but I won’t put names on here as this is my child’s school, I just don’t think this right and want to see what others think.

My daughter attended a Diwali lunch put on by the school recently and I genuinely thought this was lovely. I feel everything should be represented equally, I don’t understand or agree that the head should be picking and choosing what’s allowed and what isn’t. Surely this isn’t right?

What a fuss. If you receive this information in an official school communication you can take it up with them. In the meantime it's just hearsay from your gossiping PTA friend.

No. CHRISTMAS works just fine thanks. It will NOT be going away, despite far left councils trying to ban it from schools. Such a repugnant thing to do.

Did you attend the Donald Trump school of capitalisation?

You're really pushing your woke agenda here, trying to to do away with the TRADITIONAL PAGAN WINTER FESTIVAL. I'm sick of people on the left forgetting English and British heritage. Very sad.

It's utterly stupid. I've seen my local schools changing their Christmas Fayres to be Winter Fayres and it's unfair and offensive. The bowing to the minorities in this country has reached ridiculous proportions. Christianity is the official religion and it should be respected and acknowledged as such.

But it really isn't, is it?

I'm betting the number of posters on this thread who are real Christians, as in who pray, worship the Christian God, go to church, read the bible are under 5%.

We are an atheist country on the whole.

Two tier Keir is putting people in prison for saying the C words. Wake up sheeple!

Don't forget he wants to track people with microchips. 😂

It's not been banned has it? They are just not using the word for their winter event.

Why is it always the Christian religion that has to make concessions to minorities.
This country has lost its way.

Christianism is the most persecuted religion in the world.
If we outwardly celebrate Diwali then Christmas should be lauded aswell.

I saw in the papers today that Charles is no longer going to broadcast a Christmas message. It is going to be rebranded a "Winterval" message and no mention of Christmas allowed to avoid offending non-Christians.

What is happening to are country?

I heard Keir Starmer is replacing Charles with a one-legged, Lesbian, Muslim, who came over in a small boat … she will be driven in from the palatial 5 star hotel we are paying for. Broken Britain

As I stated earlier, we start with Christmas at the end of October. I'm not sure we really get any more christmassy

Because no one is banning christmas. OP has got half a story from her mate and from this has concluded that the word Christmas has been banned. There is nothing, even within the half a story which even indicates that it has.

You’re now jumping on a wrong bandwagon which is taking you to who knows where but it’s making you very angry and shouty. Wherever you’re heading it’s a very long way from reality.

If you read the OP’s updates you’ll find that she clarified how this came about, and that the head confirmed that they are not allowed to use the word ‘Christmas’. Ergo, the word is banned.

I heard it from a friend who,
Heard it from a friend who,
Heard that you've been messing around

So now you can all have the earworm with me

Heard it from a friend who
Heard it from a friend who
Heard it from another you been messin' around

I know 100% exactly what your Facebook feed looks like

The people shouting the loudest like this, are the least likely to be gracing the church pews on a Sunday, anyway, imo. Those type of posts, are quite telling.

PLEASE tell me that's not true. Confused

mugglewump · 09/11/2025 10:38

So what religious element of the Xmas/end of term party or the Xmas/Winter fair is harmed by this name change? A school fundraiser in the first week of December has very little to do with Christmas as a religious celebration. I don't think it makes a blind bit of difference what it is called and I am sure the word Christmas has not been banned. There will be Xmas crafts at the fair, xmas decorations and, like most active PTFAs, they'll be selling Xmas trees and have Xmas cards for the children to design and sell.

Fayethefair · 09/11/2025 10:38

Zov · 09/11/2025 10:21

Yes. I would like to know the name of this school that insults and berates Christianity.... By pretending Christmas doesn't exist!

A lot of people asking for the schools name. I don’t want to openly name it but let’s just say it’s a very large Secondary just East of Cambridge.

I don’t think it actually really matters if the word has been banned a little bit or a big bit. Who’s to say this is okay but oh no that’s going too far? The fact is that it’s even been brought up at all. It shouldn’t be an issue.

Yes! All this new fangled Christmas stuff! We're a pagan country historically don't you know? Christmas trees are German, not English. Santa Claus is a mash up from Turkey and America (changing the colour from green to red, to sell Coke!).

Let's stick to good old English paganism and ban all talk of Christmas, that foreign import.

Gallowayan · 09/11/2025 10:16

I find it believable and these things can be verified

Years ago Birmingham City Council adopted the term "Winterval" (Ouch)to replace "Christmas"in case the use of the word Christmas caused offence.

Sorry to let the facts get in the way of your outrage, but this was done for a total of two years, 1997 and 1998, as the council’s marketing of winter events, as a way of trying to get people into Birmingham city centre for all festivities on in those winters, from Diwali, Christmas lights switch on, Frankfurt Christmas market, the open air ice rink, to New Year and Chinese New Year. It was advertised in a brochure with a Christmas tree on the front, and which used the word ‘Christmas’ throughout.

I'm going to the Remembrance Day service that starts at 10.55am, (Church is 3 minutes walk) so my posts are 'telling' you nothing dear. Wink

You can't ban something a little bit

You said you would in your first post. 'I’m happy to let mumsnet know the name of the school if they don’t feel this post is genuine'

And either the word is banned or it isn't.

I think you've researched now and found it isn't and are back tracking.

Rosscameasdoody · 09/11/2025 10:30

So are Eid and Diwali, but if anyone suggested renaming either to make them more ‘inclusive’ they’d be accused of racism.

Eid and Diwali are religious events, Christmas (as we know it in schools with Santa and decorating the tree) isn't christian, the bible specifically speaks against it. I have a few Christian friends who are very anti Christmas, with the exception of worship on the 25th.

AnnaMagnani · 09/11/2025 10:40

Clicked on this as assumed it wouldn't be true.

However OP is in Cambridgeshire so yes, it absolutely could be true.

Also the people complaining would be white British and the Asian parents couldn't care less about their kids school celebrating Christmas.

It's a weird place and along with Bristol, will be the last outpost of the diversity obsession.

Oh please do explain the difference between something being banned a little bit and a big bit

Dutchhouse14 · 09/11/2025 10:41

I would be outraged too OP.
Whether we attend church or not Christmas is an important part of British culture and heritage and of course our children should learn about the nativity story as part of their education, and the word Christmas should be freely used-Christmas fayre, Christmas party, Christmas holidays etc etc
I would definitely be speaking to the headteacher about this and then if true raising concerns with board of governors.
Our history and culture is important.
I wouldn't be offended or feel left out by diwali celebrations and other religions shouldn't be offended or left out by Christian celebrations.
I do feel very sorry for Children in jehovah witness families over Xmas thou, growing up we lived opposite a jehovah witness family and i was really upset Father Christmas didn't come to them. They didn't get birthday presents either😢
Imo it's more excluding if only one child in the class doesn't celebrate Christmas, but in a school where there are lots of children not celebrating Christmas for religious reasons then the children aren't as likely to feel left out, especially if they have their own special celebrations.
And I have known Muslim families to still buy their children Xmas presents.
