Our school has banned the word Christmas?

Fayethefair · 09/11/2025 09:30

I’ve heard from a friend on my DD’s school’s ptfa that our Cambridgeshire school has banned the word Christmas to make the school events feel more inclusive. So now it’s Festive Party, Festive Fayre etc. I’m happy to let mumsnet know the name of the school if they don’t feel this post is genuine so they can check this themselves but I won’t put names on here as this is my child’s school, I just don’t think this right and want to see what others think.

My daughter attended a Diwali lunch put on by the school recently and I genuinely thought this was lovely. I feel everything should be represented equally, I don’t understand or agree that the head should be picking and choosing what’s allowed and what isn’t. Surely this isn’t right?

"you all seem convinced I’m here to create ‘outrage and division"

The thing is OP, if you take the 'outrage and division' out of the story there's not much to be interested in your tittle tattle based post.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 09/11/2025 10:20

@Fayethefair you said you were happy to name the school in your opening point. ' I’m happy to let mumsnet know the name of the school if they don’t feel this post is genuine'

Name it.

It's non INCLUSIVE! (Shouting as you are shouting)

Oh, shall we ban the words from all other religions then? Because THEY are non inclusive too?!

GagMeWithASpoon · 09/11/2025 10:20

OneAmberFinch · 09/11/2025 10:11

I assume it's okay to prevent your children from taking part in the Diwali party if you are Christian, or keep them home if the syllabus mentions Eid that day? By the logic of many posters here? It should only be for the Hindu/Muslim students?

Edited

Any parent is allowed to withdraw their child from any (or part) of RE lessons.

You’d also be surprised at the significant number of parents that refused for their children to attend a trip to a mosque for religious reasons.

Here we go….

Where does this shite come from?
Some of it is because peeps misunderstand, don't listen, are a bit dim or 'It's on fb so it's gotta be true innit'.

Shit like this makes me so glad my kids left school at the end of the noughties. And that I live in an area that celebrates Christmas, and where the council doesn't whine and moan at people having the audacity to want to celebrate Christmas in a CHRISTIAN COUNTRY. Along with trying to BAN the word Christmas. Happy Holiday signs can get in the bin. It's CHRISTMAS!!! Hmm

I would have lost my shit if my DC's school had done this, and would have considered taking them out of the school. Yes, I really would!

I think you sould name and shame the school as you said you would @Fayethefair

Would anyone in a country that is largely Muslim or Sikh for example, ban those words in their schools? (Or the words of their celebrations?!) NO, they wouldn't. It's a disgrace! And once again, Christians are the ones to suffer. No-one ever fucks over any other religion. It's always Christians (and Christianity) who get shit on in the UK. It honestly makes me sick to my stomach. 😠

U ok hun?

Yes. I would like to know the name of this school that insults and berates Christianity.... By pretending Christmas doesn't exist!

We aren’t allowed to do Christmas things at our school. We have one child who is a Jehovah’s Witness. So there is no nativity play anymore, now they do a ‘winter’ play, they do put up a Christmas tree in the classroom, but the decorations have to be ‘winter’ rather than Christmas (snowflake not Father Christmas).

It’s annoying. I’m not even Christian. I’m Jewish! But culturally, I like Christmas, we have a Christmas tree, I’d like my dc to have the experience of doing a nativity play and carolling and Christmas activities. It’s part of childhood. If my religion meant I wasn’t comfortable with my children taking part, I’d keep them home that day or ask for an alternative activity. I wouldn’t want an entire school to be banned from doing something just because I had different beliefs.

Again, I’m Jewish, but I don’t care if my dc is a donkey in the nativity play or colours in Father Christmas during a craft activity. It doesn’t detract from my own belief system.

Oddly, the children do learn about lots of other religions in RE. I don’t know why such an issue is taken with Christmas (there doesn’t seem to be an issue with Easter).

Edited

But decorating a tree and ‘Father Christmas’ have nothing to do with the birth of Christ. They are social conventions rather than religious activities. Christmas itself is a Christian takeover of pagan midwinter Yule. Much like Easter stems from Passover. Those who genuinely believe in the Christian birth of Jesus story will not be offended by a tree having snowflakes rather than an effigy of an imaginary figure.

It's evident even in this thread some posters are falling over themselves to be outraged based on nothing more than a few lines about a Christmas party being renamed.

Bagsintheboot · 09/11/2025 10:22

@justalittlebitofrain although you all seem convinced I’m here to create ‘outrage and division’ this is actually an honest post about something that has actually happened. If this were the other way around and our school had banned the use of the word Diwali to celebrate this festival I’m sure these comments would look very different.

To be very clear I don’t want the mention of ANY religions or religious words or festivals banned. I don’t think it’s right the school have done this and I would have put this post up regardless whether this was a Christmas or Diwali festival. I agree they should all be represented fairly in our schools.

I wouldn’t dream of complaining to our head that the Diwali lunch isn’t inclusive enough and the name needs to be changed. I wanted my daughter to attend and experience that and that’s how it should be .

Ask the head of school in writing and then come back here with their response.
Sometimes people post these things to increase division among the different religions.
Not saying you did but a bit of proof would make things clearer.

On a serious note, many people are put off stepping into a church for anything they perceive might involve religion. Our church needs to try very hard to get people in through the door (for financial reasons, if not religious) and local people are much more likely to come if it's a Winter or Festive Fayre. These two terms are also more appealing to decent crafters who might book a table at said fayre, when it's got Christmas in the name there's either an assumption the goods should be Christmas related or it's all Christmas tat.

If your church is more concerned about not offending jumble sale customers by dumbing down its deeply Christian theological mission it may as well shut up shop. The idea of a thriving church is to serve its community and explain why God’s hope and love is at the heart of that service.

I have the same message for school leaders and governors who go down this cultural whitewashing in the name of ‘inclusion’ and ‘not offending’. There is nothing offensive about children learning the nativity story in a country that it is culturally and institutionally Christian (even if not religiously). To say they’ll ban or diminish it for spurious mob-pleasing reasons makes them look thick, bigoted and scared. Not somewhere I’d want to send my children to be educated quite frankly.

No, you don't get to say that. If we're going to ban CHRISTMAS, (because it's not 'inclusive') then why not ban all the words from other religions too.

You have clearly got no answer to that, judging by your ridiculous response to me. Once again, Christians take a battering, but no other religion does. Go figure........

ExtraOnions · 09/11/2025 10:24

Jehovahs Witnesses are Christians … so by agreeing to their demands, Schools are supporting Christianity, not “banning” it.

It's utterly stupid. I've seen my local schools changing their Christmas Fayres to be Winter Fayres and it's unfair and offensive. The bowing to the minorities in this country has reached ridiculous proportions. Christianity is the official religion and it should be respected and acknowledged as such.

Gallowayan · 09/11/2025 10:16

I find it believable and these things can be verified

Years ago Birmingham City Council adopted the term "Winterval" (Ouch)to replace "Christmas"in case the use of the word Christmas caused offence.

Makes sense. Only 34% of Birmingham residents are Christians. If the council wants buy in for the celebration from its citizens a secular term is a sensible choice. It's not about avoiding offence as much as making things relevent to the people who's city it is.

Snowflakecentral · 09/11/2025 10:26

I'm pagan and christmas was created to cover over pagan traditions along with easter and all the rest of it.
I like christmas trees and the decor, lights etc. Really can't be flag waving for the 'winter festival' bit though. Not offended whatsoever, you have your beliefs I have mine.

I’m pretty sure Christmas isn’t banned …

… hurry up, Mass will be about to start at Church, and you don’t want to be late - I can see how important your Christian religion is to you.
