Did I give too much?

Nursery manager called me and asked if I was ok giving £50 to a member of staff who is no longer my child's key worker. It was a gift card. Maybe the staff member had to report it but she's been part of my child's life for 1.5 years being a key worker and I appreciate her....(And appreciate her not to get anything but cash she can spend on herself)

No she was worried it was too much

you gave a staff member a £50 gift card, and the manager of the nursery called to check that you were happy to make this gift?

I’ve been in workplaces where we had to report gifts over £10/20, so that’s probably what’s happened.

If you were happy to gift it, then I wouldn’t give it too much thought.

Yep

It's very kind of you. They probably have a procedure to report gifts over a certain value, I wouldn't think any more about it.

Full story from the start is much easier.

I agree that it’s probably because they have to report gifts over a certain value. It’s definitely quite a generous gift but, if you can afford it, there’s no problem.

Dairymilkisminging · 06/11/2025 09:06

Yeah we have to report gift/tips over £40 at my work

CatsorDogsrule · 06/11/2025 09:07

Your original post could have been a bit clearer, but it wasn't difficult to understand what you were saying.

It was a generous gift and I'm sure you made the former keyworker feel appreciated, as you intended. I agree that she probably needed to report it and the fact she did, shows her integrity.

Why is it a surprise? Bloody hell the op did a nice thing and being Judged left right and centre! 🙄

IsMNRoff · 06/11/2025 09:14

user12367e7e7 · 06/11/2025 09:13

Why

On the basis of:

  1. the crux of the OP
  2. the way you have conveyed the information
NaranjaDreams · 06/11/2025 09:14

It'll just be that they have to declare gifts over a certain size; and it's probably a lot more than they usually recieve, so the manager needs to do their due diligence and make sure you meant to give that much. It's not inconceivable that you've given them the wrong card, etc.

It was a lovely thing to do.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 06/11/2025 09:16

Bloody hell, some of you wummin are downright difficult 🙄

Catwoman8 · 06/11/2025 09:18

I am not sure why others think you need to give more detail or asking why you work...

Your first post is clear, you have given an expensive gift to a nursery staff member you value. The nursery manager will just be following policy to report any gifts over a a certain value, I wouldn't think anymore of it.

IsMNRoff · 06/11/2025 09:20

I’m sorry op
i completely misinterpreted your op to mean the nursery manager demanded £50 off you

very sorry. I have been thick!
