Disgusting sellers on vinted

Two purchases recently. A pleather bikers jacket described as in excellent condition. Stank of cigarettes, rank with sweat, armpit stains etc. Took it to the dry cleaners and they cleaned it but said we can't get the smell out. So that had to be binned.
Black jacket arrived today again it said excellent condition. It stank of sweat. It was absolutely rank. There was also a heavily used snot rag in one of the pockets. Just left in there.
I don't want to buy anything more on there now.
If it says excellent condition I don't expect it to stink of body odour.
Would you?

Rank - but why did you tick that everything was okay?

If something is clean, but still smells, an ozone generator can really help. Hotels use them when guests have smoked in non-smoking rooms.

MissyPants · 18/09/2025 18:18

It's the minority, lots of great sellers on there, I've bought a few things and haven't had any issues.
It's the luck of the draw I think as well, some people just don't care, but others like me who sell on there do. I go out of my way to take lots of pics of 1 item, and what you see is definitely what you get.

YohoCrimbo · 18/09/2025 18:19

Oh man that’s grim.
I’m looking for woollen trousers for work and the last two that I thought of buying were, up close, in a disgusting state.

One pair had about 2 clumps of hair (the kind you pull off your hairbrush) and on the other, when zooming in, I’m convinced I saw grey pubes.

I kid you not.

Overtheatlantic · 18/09/2025 18:19

I’m not keen on Vinted, and this is why. You never know where these clothes are coming from.

SilenceInside · 18/09/2025 18:22

They're not in Very Good condition so I’d have pressed the I Have An Issue button and returned them for a refund. Items should be clean and not have body odour smells. Presumably the sellers hadn’t bothered to get the items dry cleaned, if they weren’t machine washable.

xsquared · 18/09/2025 18:23

There are definitely some unscrupulous sellers on Vinted. Your purchases sound horrendous.

I bought some revision aids on there the other day, described as New with Tags and even the description said it was NEW in capital letters.

When it arrived, it certainly wasn't brand new, because a couple of non essential components were missing, which I can live with, but what got me was that one of the cards was badly creased and folded a couple of times and had pencil marks over it, indicating that it was a well used card!

LittleMG · 19/09/2025 07:46

I am really surprised that quite a lot of seller describe ‘very good’ condition and item is clearly worn out ‘good’ or ‘functional’ at a push. I honestly can’t believe some of it.

rewardh · 19/09/2025 07:56

They are getting away with it because people are doing like you have and not immediately easing an issue. You must have accepted them as being ok?

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 19/09/2025 07:59

I had similar this week. A jumper for a couple of quid. Deacribed in good condition and photos look OK. Arrived covered in stains-Looked like it had been splashed in various places at different times. I applied a few stain removal techniques and got most of them out but emailed the lady. The lady was insistent that it was fine when it was posted and the photos (close ups of specific areas and one whole jumper from quite a distance. Insisted she had checked it before posting. It wasn't worth me sending back for a refund as its more to post than I'd receive back. I also think it's not worth getting a shit score / embroiled in an argument for the sake of £2
I do think it's awful.bejaviour though and was really cross she had described in good condition and not mentioned any stains

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 19/09/2025 08:00

I’ve bought loads of stuff in Vinted and the worst problem has been that the colour didn’t look like the picture (which can easily happen with people taking photos at home with less than perfect lighting) so it didn’t suit me. You need to report this.

Whateverwillwedonow · 19/09/2025 08:04

I would have clicked the ‘I have an issue’ button rather than try to fix it myself.

Mrsmunchofmunchington · 19/09/2025 08:15

It can be a nightmare dealing with bad sellers.

Vinted is run by bots and if you leave honest feedback unscrupulous sellers often retaliate by leaving lies about you.

Sellers aren’t forced to pay return postage for the most obviously “not as described items” so unless it is a reasonably costly item it isn’t worth the buyer’s time and money returning it so the seller still profits.

Vinted needs an overhaul.

ThirdStorm · 19/09/2025 08:16

I had one item like that, described as very good but it stunk of smoke. I thought I could rescue it so clicked everything was ok. It was not ok and I couldn't rescue. I chalked that spend up to experience. I think it was in the region of £13 all in. I partly wondered if the seller who was obviously a smoker didn't realise it was that bad, but as a non-smoker it hit me like wall!

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 19/09/2025 08:17

They do need to do something about the returns for when it's I have an issue. If the seller asks for a return it's kind of a way of forcing the hand of the buyer to keep it, because of the cost to do this.

I bought jeans described as 'long' - I'm only 5' 10" (so hardly on the big side of tall) and they came to halfway up my shins; they had clearly shrunk. The trouble is that having some kind of Vinted ombudsman would cost money... but you should be able to reclaim the cost of postage from sellers who falsely advertise.

It annoys me as I sell and take huge pains to point out flaws. I often email buyers before sending if there's a flaw, to check they know.

Tiredofwhataboutery · 19/09/2025 08:21

I think this is why I’m such a vinted cheapskate, max £10 for any item. It’s like gambling I’ve had lots of good buys so the odd dud balances out.

TheGetAlongGang · 19/09/2025 08:28

I once bought a wool coat (it was either vinted or ebay)

It arrived, all good until I wore it

I put my hand in the pocket and pulled out a snotty tissue,a broken hair clip and a used sanpro

ParanoidGynodroid · 19/09/2025 08:36

I've bought hundreds of things from Vinted. I buy all my clothes from there or charity shops. I've only had problems twice, which was annoying but ultimately hasn't stopped me. Just be aware, and always raise a complaint!

I've still saved loads not buying new.

The other thing to look out for is new sellers with no feedback selling too good to be true label items... they will be fakes!

heartsinvisiblefury · 19/09/2025 08:36

You need to say that there is an issue. You don’t have to pay and keep something that hasn’t been sold honestly.

heartsinvisiblefury · 19/09/2025 08:38

and Vinted customer service is so bad. Robots 🤖 . Try to ask a question that is out of their standard reply remit and you might as well try to get to the moon.

Navigatinglife100 · 19/09/2025 08:46

These things are immediately obvious. Why not complain?

My DD sells bit on Vinted and she always says you can't assume.you will be paid until collection and some fixed period after if issues are raised.

I've only bought a handful.of times. The first for me and it had a funny smell but that came out after a wash. The material was disappointing but that was my error as it was a monsoon print that I already own and love and I assumed it would be made in the same fabric but it's not. I didn't complain but took a look at the seller and noticed she implies these things were hers and unworn but they vary size 6 - 22, so make of that what you will.

I then just decided to not buy again. Until...

My elderly father has dementia, and there's a jumper he loves from the Tu range from at least 6 years ago. We decided that if we created 3 outfits from same clothing ranges it might make dressing easier. We used vinted to find these duplicates and it worked really, really, well (until he deteriorated...but that's not Vinteds fault!).

All of Dad's clothes came in the described condition.

neveradmit17 · 19/09/2025 08:53

I've mostly had good luck with Vinted and got some real bargains. I am an inveterate shopper and I end up selling quite a lot of bnwt clothing and shoes, but I pride myself in offering bargains.

I don't know what you do about unscrupulous sellers. I always check reviews and mostly buy from people I follow. I agree though, it's horrible to get a smelly and dirty item.

G5000 · 19/09/2025 08:56

I have about 98% of good experiences, but yes have also received 'new without tags' items that are clearly worn and dirty.
Just send it back, it's clearly not as described.

outdooryone · 19/09/2025 08:58

I will only buy new and new with tags, for exactly this reason. Unfortunately one persons 'Excellent' is another persons 'that is minging'.
I had to complain to one seller last month who sold shirt 'as new with tags' and clearly the shirt had been worn a fair bit - the tags had just been removed when new and popped into the packaging.

On balance though, Vinted is great and I have a few dozen items that have been just great.

MagpiePi · 19/09/2025 09:05

I think you have to accept that ‘excellent condition’ and ‘only worn a couple of times’ don’t actually mean anything, and look carefully at the photos and the seller’s other items to see if it is just an online jumble sale.

I wanted some new Birkenstocks and was appalled at the number that were described as never worn, but it was obvious they had been.

CicerosHead · 19/09/2025 09:13

I love Vinted, had great success with it so far, both buying and selling.

However. My personal bugbear is Febreeze. I'm not one of these uber dramatic people who fold at the whif of perfume, I don't get migraines, don't mind perfumed sanpro/whatever, don't faint in a cleaning isle in a supermarket. But fucking Febreeze! HATE the stuff, I'd rather something stank of cigarettes/whatever, if it's washable - I'll just wash it, air it afterwards.

If there are any Vinted sellers on here, please, please, PLEASE don't use Febreeze, stuff of satan 🤮 🤮
