Disgusting sellers on vinted

Two purchases recently. A pleather bikers jacket described as in excellent condition. Stank of cigarettes, rank with sweat, armpit stains etc. Took it to the dry cleaners and they cleaned it but said we can't get the smell out. So that had to be binned.
Black jacket arrived today again it said excellent condition. It stank of sweat. It was absolutely rank. There was also a heavily used snot rag in one of the pockets. Just left in there.
I don't want to buy anything more on there now.
If it says excellent condition I don't expect it to stink of body odour.
Would you?

They are getting away with it because people are doing like you have and not immediately easing an issue. You must have accepted them as being ok?

I have raised it as an issue. Im waiting for a reply.

Why did you accept everything was OK?
Too late once you accept it.

All my purchases so far so good.

MaturingCheeseball · 19/09/2025 17:06

I always look at sellers’ other items, to make sure they are their own (ie all same size) and they’re not selling on charity shop/boot sale stuff.

Touch wood I’ve not had a problem yet.

I’ve been on eBay 20 years and had fewer than five bad experiences, but mostly with buyers trying it on.

Whatafustercluck · 19/09/2025 17:13

We've also had bad experiences recently. I bought a light weight autumn jacket for ds. It arrived quickly and upon first inspection looked fine. Stupidly I hadn't given it a proper good look, so clicked everything is ok. When ds came to wear it, there were rips under the armpits and a rip on the inside by the zip. There had been no mention of this, the item was described as 'mint condition, worn twice'. I sent photos in the hope the seller would see reason, but he basically called me a liar and left negative feedback accordingly.

We've mostly had good experiences and picked up some bargains. But I tend to go for people with lots of 5 star reviews. Even then, it's no guarantee though. Lesson learned for me - thoroughly inspect from top to bottom before clicking everything is ok.

InMyOpenOnion · 19/09/2025 17:18

I think it's always a risk buying from an unknown individual. People have different standards and morals unfortunately. But that's why it costs a lot less than buying from a shop.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 19/09/2025 17:22

As others have said, you need to check it and then use the “I have an issue button”. Apparently vinted is pretty pro buyer on these things.

I’ve only had to do it once, on a necklace that arrived broken, and there was no problem getting the refund.

I did once get a sweatshirt covered in pet hair - I let the seller know and they said “well
I didn’t say it was a pet free home” as though pet hair should be the default! I didn’t raise an issue and was able to get it clean but it was annoying. Nice sweater now it’s clean though.

I love Vinted, had great success with it so far, both buying and selling.

However. My personal bugbear is Febreeze. I'm not one of these uber dramatic people who fold at the whif of perfume, I don't get migraines, don't mind perfumed sanpro/whatever, don't faint in a cleaning isle in a supermarket. But fucking Febreeze! HATE the stuff, I'd rather something stank of cigarettes/whatever, if it's washable - I'll just wash it, air it afterwards.

If there are any Vinted sellers on here, please, please, PLEASE don't use Febreeze, stuff of satan 🤮 🤮

Yes!! It’s so awful! I bought a jacket on Vinted recently and when it arrived and I opened the package, I was immediately hit with an overpowering smell of a sickly sweet chemical. It instantly made me feel ill and gave me a headache. I messaged the seller to politely let her know that I found it very unpleasant and that she might want to reconsider doing this in future as some people are very sensitive to smells and never got a response. I washed it straight away and it still smells faintly of whatever she sprayed on it 😬

Saxendi · 19/09/2025 17:35

There do seem to be more sellers trying to sell stuff of very dubious quality, I always look at reviews and what other items are up for sale, but somehow from time to time end up with damaged things, I also make sure I look at things properly before clicking everything is ok.

bugalugs45 · 19/09/2025 17:39

Im both a buyer & seller on Vinted & almost 500 transactions in , had 2 problems , consider that excellent going , but I read sellers feedback before buying , & I wouldn’t sell anything that I wouldn’t be happy to receive myself so that rules out anything less than very good condition . Not everyone on there is out to con you !!

CurbsideProphet · 19/09/2025 18:03

I had an 8 month break after buying a pair of lightweight trousers which were advertised as New Without Tags but actually had a very obvious period blood stain in the crotch.
The seller said they had bought them second hand and hadn't noticed...

Lovetosurf · 19/09/2025 18:20

I buy most of my clothes eBay, charity shops and recently Vinted. I'm picky about brand quality and wearing natural fabrics.

If there are only one or a couple of photos, I don't even bother to look. No measurements or fabric composition is really annoying too, so if they aren't in the listing or won't give them to me, I won't consider buying it.

Not sure how some sellers think anyone is going to buy when all they've posted is one crappy blurry pic of a crumpled up item!

Always zoom into the photos for a really good look and looking at the background of photos can be useful too - I won't buy anything from anyone who's got dirty walls/doors/floor etc!

Gingefringe · 19/09/2025 18:21

I bought a tweed jacket off eBay a few years ago that stank of a horrible damp mouldy smell when it arrived. I opened a ‘not as described’ dispute via eBay - maintained that the smell should have been mentioned in the listing. I did get a refund but I think that eBay gives better protection than Vinted.

beautyqueeen · 19/09/2025 18:28

I rarely use it but only buy new but you have to be careful as often sellers list as new without tags but when you read the description it will say worn once…so it’s not new then is it 🤦🏽‍♀️

There returns policy is shocking, why should I pay to return something that was misold?! They also don’t care about fakes, I reported some fake CT make up and they reviewed it and said no concerns 🤦🏽‍♀️🤦🏽‍♀️

No, but would have also reported an issue and returned it

Thelnebriati · 19/09/2025 19:55

You do have to be careful with leather, I've bought a couple of items that had been treated with Febreeze and when that wore off they stank of cigarette smoke, mould and B.O.
When they arrive now I unpack them and hang them up for a couple of days before I leave feedback.

NotMeekNotObedient · 19/09/2025 21:54

Unfortunately I've also had a few issues. I still buy but nothing very expensive.

Mostly stuff described as very good condition arriving stained.

Other people's ideas of very good condition are not mine!

Vinted are useless - I raised an issue saying not as described but apparently stains are fine under 'very good' even though that is not what they say under the description of each category. Not worth paying the return postage.

Unless you get a decent seller who doesn't request you return and gives you a refund you're pretty stuffed.

Unfortunately the ones who are unscrupulous obviously want you to pay to return a £2 top!

I look very closely at pics and if at all in doubt don't buy. I inspect everything well, try stain remover on the day of delivery and only then raise a complaint.

But with the first item you didn’t you took it to the dry cleaners.

I've sent it back but Im annoyed I have to do this and waste my time and money. They must have known the item stank!!!

I just bought an item on eBay described as NWOT and arrived very well washed and faded. Going back, can’t stand a liar

The first item I just chucked. I didn't have time to send it back, I work full time and live miles from a post office out in the country. Jeez why do I have to explain myself to everyone on here??? I don't live in a town or anywhere convenient like most people, it isn't easy to find the time.

It's the minority, lots of great sellers on there, I've bought a few things and haven't had any issues.
It's the luck of the draw I think as well, some people just don't care, but others like me who sell on there do. I go out of my way to take lots of pics of 1 item, and what you see is definitely what you get.

Unfortunately I don't think its the minority. At least 50% of the items I have ordered from Vinted have been misdescribed.

Wrong brand, damaged zip, holes...

I always leave honest feedback and say if I had an issue but from all the 5* reviews it doesnt look as most buyers do that.

Rocketpants50 · 20/09/2025 07:53

I saw a coat for sale described as very good, when I zoomed in the coat appeared to have a large stain on it but thought it might be the light in photograph. Contacted seller to ask and she confirmed there was a big stain but it was ok as she had washed it and mistakes if stain had come out. Was not in description but sure she would have argued it was in picture but cheeky to say it was in very good condition!

You said you took it to the dry cleaners. You don’t have to explain yourself though, it’s not that big a deal.

citygirl77 · 20/09/2025 08:10

I think I may stop buying things on vinted. I recently bought a few pairs of trousers. All are going to charity, apart from one. Most were well worn and faded, not in ‘very good’ condition.
