Disgusting sellers on vinted

Two purchases recently. A pleather bikers jacket described as in excellent condition. Stank of cigarettes, rank with sweat, armpit stains etc. Took it to the dry cleaners and they cleaned it but said we can't get the smell out. So that had to be binned.
Black jacket arrived today again it said excellent condition. It stank of sweat. It was absolutely rank. There was also a heavily used snot rag in one of the pockets. Just left in there.
I don't want to buy anything more on there now.
If it says excellent condition I don't expect it to stink of body odour.
Would you?

I always look at sellers’ other items, to make sure they are their own (ie all same size) and they’re not selling on charity shop/boot sale stuff.

Touch wood I’ve not had a problem yet.

I’ve been on eBay 20 years and had fewer than five bad experiences, but mostly with buyers trying it on.

I agree.
From bad experiences I no longer buy from those listing numerous sizes because they are often in terrible condition.

Ditto those selling multiple perfumes or cosmetics. Frequently fakes.

Ugh I just had seveal listings popping up this morning, all AI photos, selling SHEIN junk for 5 times the original price, listed as some made up brands.
I hope Vinted can manage that stuff and it won't become another etsy, where there are now 10000 aliexpress listings for every actual cratsman.

I understand the idea but plenty of people lose and gain weight - I'm selling my old 14s next to some of my current size 6's and everything in between..

Tastaturen · 20/09/2025 08:19

I've said it before and I'll say it again, vinted is essentially a jumble sale where you don't even get to touch/smell/properly see the jumble you're buying.

SwallowsandAmazonians · 20/09/2025 08:24

I've had good luck so far, but the idea that you should have to pay return postage for something not right is mad. I much prefer eBay for anything expensive.

YorkshireGoldDrinker · 20/09/2025 08:26

Oh yuck! I'm sorry this happened, OP.

As an aside, the only thing I prefer on Vinted as opposed to Ebay is how prices are displayed. Vinted displays the buyer protection fee clearly alongside the price. Ebay just tacks it onto the price and the result is really odd pricing. I've heard a few sellers pulling out of Ebay as their stock is not selling as well as it used to.

I will only buy new and new with tags, for exactly this reason. Unfortunately one persons 'Excellent' is another persons 'that is minging'.
I had to complain to one seller last month who sold shirt 'as new with tags' and clearly the shirt had been worn a fair bit - the tags had just been removed when new and popped into the packaging.

On balance though, Vinted is great and I have a few dozen items that have been just great.

Edited

This really annoys me. A seller will have selected ‘new without tags’ and then in the comments it will say ‘only worn a few times..’ thats not new then is it?

I think sometimes they include trying it on when saying that. They might briefly wear it once or twice to get an idea, which then counts as 'only worn a few times'. It's still wrong.

Whenautumnleavesstarttofall · 20/09/2025 08:59

I think the “New without Tags’ description is increasingly being flouted on Vinted.

I only ever buy New with Tags or New without, but over the last couple of months have noticed clear evidence of items having been worn in the photos or ‘worn just a few times’ in the descriptions.

So much so, that I looked up the full criteria for each description last night, just to be sure I wasn’t mistaken.

Shoes with scuffed soles and wear on the heels are clearly not ‘new without tags’ so why aren’t Vinted doing something about it?

Vinted has been good while it lasted but I agree with the PP it is turning into a jumble sale and a very expensive one at that !!

Notthatgameagain · 20/09/2025 09:15

Did you check their reviews. Surely if they sell stuff that had a smell others would have noted in the reviews? I only buy from people with good reviews and lots of them. Or from someone who has not got any reviews yet if I am happy to take the chance..

You can report these items. I've done it before where the item is New without tags and the description says it has been worn a few times. Vinted will delete the listing, I think.

I’ve bought a load of stuff on vinted as I lost weight, none was at the low end, but paying between 30-50 pounds for higher end brands in very good condition or, new with /without tags.

i have had 3 issues, out of about 60 plus items. one was a top which was clearly done in, the other two were absolutely in very good condition as described, but stank of bo. One of them I could even see the deodorant marks under the arms. I washed them and they were fine, but I cannot get my head round someone putting dirty clothing in a package and sending it,without even washing it. That’s utterly minging.

what sort of person actually sends their dirty clothes. 😱

G5000 · 20/09/2025 15:47

I've also noticed that 'new with tags' seems to now mean 'used but in reasonable condition' and anything listed as 'good' means it's not fit to be worn.

FirstdatesFred · 20/09/2025 16:01

Bought loads of things. Had a couple of stinky things, raised a "not as described" issue and got refunded. Simples.

Agree, I filter anything below very good out and don’t even look.
