Why are ‘Hobbies’ so top secret on Mn?

😂Always when someone talks about a hobby on here, it’s never said what the hobby is and a reason for this is often that it’s ‘Outing’
I honestly can’t think of that many hobbies and especially ones that should be kept secret or are especially outing, it’s such a mystery!

Is it just me 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think people like to get us all guessing. I am going for garden gnome painting for the thread I think you are referring to.

outerspacepotato · 17/08/2025 17:22

There can be only one.

So identifying.

Like making dolls from dryer lint.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 17/08/2025 17:23

😄😄 agree

bridgetreilly · 17/08/2025 17:23

Because only three middle aged men in the country go cycling. Or play golf. Whereas all women spend their time crocheting mice out of dog hair.

It so so weird.

Also, she keeps fish.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 17/08/2025 17:25

It's always bloody cycling anyway 🤣

outerspacepotato · 17/08/2025 17:26

Hey, that dog hair is chiengora.

Oops.

ExpressCheckout · 17/08/2025 17:26

Yes, the 'outing' bit makes me giggle too. Same when posters say, 'a large retail store' etc. It would be actually better to name the store if there's been a problem.

Lmnop22 · 17/08/2025 18:00

I agree it should be less common and then we can really let our imaginations run wild with the one or two who persist and, therefore, must genuinely must have “outing” hobbies! Like creating replicas of the seven wonders of the world out of blue cheese…

Alltheplantsarejustdying · 17/08/2025 18:02

I didn't even realise 'hobbies' was a thing people said until I saw it all the time on here. It comes across as such a twee thing to say.

Yes same! 😂

I think a lot of people have hobbies that not a lot of people nearby/in their everyday life share so it creates the impression that it's niche/unusual - and in some cases if someone could be bothered to trawl through someone's posts then something like a hobby with hints about where they lived, what they drove etc. could be outing. If...

Tandora · 17/08/2025 18:07

Hahaha I love that it’s a unanimous vote. YANBU

Hahah so true

NuffSaidSam · 17/08/2025 18:09

I think people who post a lot are conscious that it could (along with the other things they've said) 'out' them to people that they know.

I never care what the hobby is anyway so I can't say it bothers me (unless it's absolutely crucial to the information they need).

VeryStressedMum · 17/08/2025 18:11

I don't know anyone who has ever said they have a hobby they just say I do cycling or yoga or knitting.
I always think of hobbies as like collecting stamps or train spotting

frozendaisy · 17/08/2025 18:13

I assume it’s colouring-in books

CosyMintFish · 17/08/2025 18:15

Because it’s embarrassing to admit how much money and relationship capital I have sacrificed in pursuit of underwater squirrel taxidermy.

Cloudymonday · 17/08/2025 18:20

I always wonder if they are making lampshades from human skin, purses from roadkill or something.
Now that would be proper niche and identifiable.

Nah. It's cycling or crocheting or similar....

Ukholidaysaregreat · 17/08/2025 18:28

🤣🤣🤣🤣so true!

Thepeopleversuswork · 17/08/2025 18:33

It is very odd.

Particularly because 99% of the time it's one of either golf, cycling or Crossfit. So you are scared your husband will be identified as one of the 1.1 million men in the SE of England who cycles at the weekend? OK, that really narrows it down.

I'd understand if it was something like stained glass or battle reenactment but it never is.

LittleBearPad · 17/08/2025 18:35

It is! Always!

Tagyoureit · 17/08/2025 18:54

Because they are so outing!!

I saw several men cycling today and I knew exactly who their wives were on here!!

😂😂

Paaseitjes · 17/08/2025 18:59

To be fair, I think I'm the only Brit on the competition circuit in my sport in my country! But that's a pretty niche position to be in

CoffeeCantata · 17/08/2025 19:02

Tandora · 17/08/2025 18:09

Hahah so true

Ah, you see, that’s a really sad attitude. People once got together to do things but now we all just watch NetFlix.

i don’t mean making matchstick models of the Tower of London ( but that’s fine too) but choirs of all kinds, bridge clubs, archaeological digs, pottery, painting, photography as well as sports - which does still happen, I admit.

People’s lives are so rushed and pressure and parents particularly are so tired - it strikes me as sad.
