So, everyone seems to have a deep tan here right now, young, old, whatever.
Wherever I go people are looking more tanned than I have ever noticed before.

A lot of it looks very even so I presume not fake?
If so, is tanning increasing again or did it never go away?
I am talking quite deep tans here, all over, so if they are fake then they're pretty good quality - if I use st tropez it comes off in patches within days Angry

I even wondered if sun bed use had started to increase again.

AIBU to think most of these tans are real and here I am stuck inside or slathered in sunblock trying to be mindful of skin cancer??

We've had some great weather, add in a couple of weeks abroad in the sun and you have a deep tan unless you're really pale.

Netcurtainnelly · 14/08/2025 13:04

I see alot of white arms and legs when I'm out so its not everyone

Whether they are healthier or not I don't know but people look.much better with abit of colour.
Don't forget the weather's hot easy to get a tan atm.

chiefscoutsgoldaward · 14/08/2025 13:08

I'm normally as pasty as they come, but even I've managed to pick up a tan this year, and that is avoiding the sun between 11 and 3 as I burn really easily.

I picked up a base tan earlier in the summer at the Lido, and now after a week in Wales at the beach every afternoon I've gone really brown.

ThejoyofNC · 14/08/2025 13:09

We've had several weeks of sun. The sun gives people a tan.

CopperWhite · 14/08/2025 13:09

It’s just summer, and lots of people have been abroad recently.

Delatron · 14/08/2025 13:10

It’s been a much better Spring/summer here. I’ve had some sort of light tan since April! Then you go away on holiday and you already have more of a base tan than usual - so get even more tanned.

I top my base tan up with fake tan.

ForWarmPeachBird · 14/08/2025 13:12

I’ve just returned from Greece, I smothered myself in factor 50 numerous times a day, wore beach shirts a lot of the time and sat under an umbrella and I’ve still come back with a tan.

Cherrysoup · 14/08/2025 13:12

Just popped into work, one colleague looks totally different, a week in the Middle East has given her a heck of a tan!

DeirdreChambersWhatACoincidence · 14/08/2025 13:13

I go dark very quickly and I've been in my allotment for hours nearly every day this spring and summer. My middle parts are still pale though!

minipie · 14/08/2025 13:14

I see a lot of uniformly golden young women around - no bikini marks etc. I reckon they are getting spray tans.

PreciousTatas · 14/08/2025 13:14

I saw the difference between my grandmas growing up.

One always wore long sleeves and large hats in the heat, and spf every single day once it was available. The other had naturally darker skin, but still loved getting an even darker tan and never covered up in the sun.

Covered up grandma had maybe four major wrinkles in her late 70's. Sun loving grandma looked like a prune by her late 60's.

On top of this I lost a best friend in her 20's to skin cancer.

I've always covered up and made sure the dc do too.

legolegoeverywhereandnotadroptodrink · 14/08/2025 13:14

People have been on holiday. Its the summer

verycloakanddaggers · 14/08/2025 13:15

I think you may be right OP - I read an article saying tanning including 'extreme tanning' using both machines and/or sun are apparently on the increase and doctors in the skin area are concerned.

Some people are apparently checking the UV level specifically, not to avoid as in the past but to burn!

Coconutter24 · 14/08/2025 13:16

It’s summer and holiday season, I’m not sure what else there is to say lol

ThrivingIn2025ing · 14/08/2025 13:16

I was just complimented on my tan yesterday… it’s fake. I use one of those tinted moisturisers, have done every day for about a month now. My knees give it away in my opinion but at a glance it looks real enough!

nameobsessed · 14/08/2025 13:16

I’m ginger so usually painfully white like a corpse but I’ve been out at the horses and the park so much this summer even I have a tan!

Pwyl · 14/08/2025 13:16

It’s the summer holidays so people will have been abroad plus warm weather here, in some areas I see a lot of sun bed stores popping up.
slathering on spf, covering up, in the shade is the way to go though, had skin cancer, do not recommend going down that path!

Delatron · 14/08/2025 13:18

I hope sun beds are not coming back in to fashion!

It is a fine line - we do need a bit of sun for vitamin D. So never having the sun on your skin can also be unhealthy (though you would age beautifully).

Fake fans are so good these days.

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 14/08/2025 13:22

You're supposed to get about 10 minutes of unfiltered sun directly on to your skin a day to get Vitamin D

I'm maintaining a fairly even tan by spending not much longer than that in the sun in the late afternoon (after getting fairly dark from a couple of hours gardening)

I did have a vitamin D deficiency picked up last year.

A supplement got my levels back up to ideal within three months.

The grandma that defied aging used to tell me that any tan at all was skin damage and to avoid it at all costs. Ironically she drank like a fish but still ended up far less aged than my sun loving granny!

Deep tan here at home as I work and do sport outside. Not by any means 'even' due to eczema/scratching and odd sleeve/shorts lines

Fake tan has improved hugely especially those people who actually moisturise/exfoliate routinely

Vintagenow · 14/08/2025 13:27

This is the summer you can't tell if someone has been abroad or not when it's usually pretty obvious here in the UK. It's hard not to tan at all when it sunny for months on end. I try not to and always wear sunscreen but I still have a tan as I'm outside a lot. Haven't been abroad this year.
My ds golfs and currently looks like he was born in the southern Mediterranean despite also wearing sunscreen.

Charabanc · 14/08/2025 13:31

It's the heatwaves. I am more tanned than I get on holiday, because I have been consistently walking the dog, or gardening (if too hot for dog!)

LostInClothes · 14/08/2025 13:33

I love sun and being outdoors but is it only me who can't stand being out in a sweaty, airless heatwave?

Fourteenandahalf · 14/08/2025 13:35

I think more people are doing those nasal tans or oral drops. The women at my gym are doing.
