Super tanned people everywhere!

So, everyone seems to have a deep tan here right now, young, old, whatever.
Wherever I go people are looking more tanned than I have ever noticed before.

A lot of it looks very even so I presume not fake?
If so, is tanning increasing again or did it never go away?
I am talking quite deep tans here, all over, so if they are fake then they're pretty good quality - if I use st tropez it comes off in patches within days Angry

I even wondered if sun bed use had started to increase again.

AIBU to think most of these tans are real and here I am stuck inside or slathered in sunblock trying to be mindful of skin cancer??

My DH and I and our two DD are all white, but tan very well with no burning.

My children are as dark as I have ever seen them.

We have had sun since June so their faces, arms and legs are really tanned from being outside at school. We have had a 2 week holiday so they went even browner and they have 4 weeks of summer holidays with next to no rain and have been outside for hours a day.

My DH has had the summer holidays off work as unpaid leave and has been topless 80% of the time. He is unbelievably dark.

If it wasn't for our blue eyes, you would put us as Mediterranean as we all have dark brown hair.

I did have a vitamin D deficiency picked up last year.

A supplement got my levels back up to ideal within three months.

The grandma that defied aging used to tell me that any tan at all was skin damage and to avoid it at all costs. Ironically she drank like a fish but still ended up far less aged than my sun loving granny!

Yes we do all need supplements from Oct-March then if you don’t get the 10-20 mins recommended then we need to carry on with the supplements. Vitamin D is so important.

It’s weighing up what is important to you. Yes a tan is sun damage and ageing. However, there are other benefits to getting some sun on large parts of the body. It’s been shown to reduce blood pressure for example. It improves mood..

Personally, I aim for around 20 minutes and never burn. I accept the skin on my body may age a bit faster. I wear a hat and factor 50 on my face though!

Eyepoint · 14/08/2025 13:56

(I think) I'm pretty sensible with the sun. I have protection on my face neck and ears everyday and on the rest of me if I'm out for very long.

I've been using Palmers gradual tanner on my legs, which does, IMO, give a very natural looking even tan and my arms have picked up quite a colour just from being out and about.

Without my clothes, I clearly don't have a deep all over tan, but with them, I look like I might!

People who do like tanning themselves deliberately have had a very good year for it.

EmeraldRoulette · 14/08/2025 13:58

My colouring is mixed race but on the paler side

I don't sit out in the sun, but just from normal every day life - I have a deep tan! That's just how it is in England this year.

Soukmyfalafel · 14/08/2025 13:59

I've started to use fake tan again after about 20 odd years. They are so much better than before and a bit more convincing now. The one I use I only put it on half hour, was off then it continues to develop, so it is much more convenient. Plus I have a base tan from decent summer.

ButIlikepink · 14/08/2025 14:04

This year it is very nice to see more people in summer clothes rather than sweating and looking scruffy in whatever they own already.
How do we convince men to get new socks for summer? YKWIM!.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 14/08/2025 14:05

I go really brown despite hating the sun and the heat, but I don't drive so I am often outside walking to places. I actively avoid the sun as much as possible but still go a deep, deep brown colour.

LostInClothes · 14/08/2025 14:05

Odd for MN to see people almost boasting of how dark they are even after sunscreen, since most discussions about sun exposure usually result in a bun fight about cancer Grin

Perhaps the tides are turning ...

As usual with such threads, people tend to agree with the average.

I don't use sunscreen but I probably should 😬

NoSoupForU · 14/08/2025 14:07

I do my level best to avoid tanning, but i still have a bit of one so it must just be the weather we've had.

ohfook · 14/08/2025 14:08

It’s nasal tanners round where I am.

LostInClothes · 14/08/2025 14:08

I can't see the 'decent' summer either, it's been like a humid swamp here (mids) and not too pleasant, and I usually love being out hiking.

A good summer has a breeze, you can breathe and enjoy it. This is just ugly IMO.

The weather has been great and summer holidays so lots of people will have picked up a tan.

LostInClothes · 14/08/2025 14:10

DH tans easily and has a very Med skin tone to begin with, he is also out most days in it and he is not 'dark brown', so I do think many of you are actually trying to catch it, let's be honest.

NoSoupForU · 14/08/2025 14:12

I also don't think most people's fake tans go patchy. I properly exfoliate beforehand, and exfoliate to remove it. I've been quite surprised by how natural my fake tan looks when I have one.

LostInClothes · 14/08/2025 14:12

Lol so we are not worried about skin damage now then?
Will we all go back to finger wagging about it in November?

Let me know where you all are where the weather is great because here it's fucking oppressive, airless.

Because we’ve actually had a summer this year? Hot sunny weather = people looking less pale than usual.

ElCorazon · 14/08/2025 14:16

If their tan is real, they will regret it in 10-15 years time 😆

LOL no one forces you to go out and burn in it!

I do think most people will secretly prefer to tan and make excuses for it tbh. (I don't mean you personally!).

If people are wearing sunscreen and going 'super dark' then it is intentional. No one has to unclothe and go dark all over walking the dog Grin

Saying this, I am ok with some level of tan, I don't have a horse in the race, but I do notice the hypocrisy on MN!

I think some of it is genetic. I am pasty and even when I lived abroad in a hot country for a year I didn’t really tan. I stay pasty white or go red. Of my 4 nieces and nephews and 2 children- they all go different colour in the summer. All parents are sun safe, go for rash vests etc. Two are incredibly fair- burn to a crisp at the sight of sun, three will pick up some colour and one goes mahogany.

For sure. I tan relatively easily, DH and DC don't. DC has their father's colouring. Whereas I am sitting here, a nice caramel colour 😊

Mikart · 14/08/2025 14:25

I am as pale as I am in December! I dont enjoy sitting in it so I dont.

I don’t think that’s fair. Lots of people just build up a tan when it is sunny day after day. I’ve got quite brown this year just from walking to work and back every day, despite spending all the hours in between stuck indoors at a desk. It’s accumulated gradually - I have olive skin and it does that, I’m not lying in the sun slathered in cooking oil.

If I was a stay at home mum, or a teacher on school break, I’d have got even browner due to being able to be outdoors for more hours.

This is your opinion.
That does not make it fact.

I have done nothing whatsoever to tan - never have, never will, and even as a caramel- colour black woman I have caught some colour.

It has been glorious lately and all I have done is commute from work to home and back, walk home from the station and read a book in the garden until the mosquitos start being annoying.

Of course I have caught some colour - it’s summer.

And yes I wear sunscreen and care about skin cancer risks.

Digdongdoo · 14/08/2025 14:29

Fake tans are much better than they used to be. But also, we're coming towards the end of a lovely hot summer. Tans expected. Unless a redhead like me, in which case freckly and a bit pink is more like it.
Nothing wrong with a bit of a tan in the summer alongside sensible precautions. Life is about balance. You seem unnecessarily cross about it.
