Super tanned people everywhere!

So, everyone seems to have a deep tan here right now, young, old, whatever.
Wherever I go people are looking more tanned than I have ever noticed before.

A lot of it looks very even so I presume not fake?
If so, is tanning increasing again or did it never go away?
I am talking quite deep tans here, all over, so if they are fake then they're pretty good quality - if I use st tropez it comes off in patches within days Angry

I even wondered if sun bed use had started to increase again.

AIBU to think most of these tans are real and here I am stuck inside or slathered in sunblock trying to be mindful of skin cancer??

Being tanned is back in fashion, so more people are tanned. Lots of fake tans are better and we have had good weather earlier in the summer so it’s not just the one or two weeks away tans.

peacetree · 14/08/2025 14:29

I look like casper all year round.
If i go out in the sun i cover up use sun screen etc.
Because ive seen the effects of sun damage on some people even family members and i dont want to look like that.

Avantiagain · 14/08/2025 14:31

I think the use of sunbeds by younger people is increasing.

SwedishEdith · 14/08/2025 14:31

From listening to my eldest, still lots of fake tanning - sprays and diy - and those oral or nasal or whatever drops. Weirdly, in France this summer and Italy last summer, I noticed lots of pale skin and not just from recently arrived tourists.

Cookiepuss · 14/08/2025 14:32

I have the sort of fair skin that never ever tans - I could live in a hot country and spend every day outside for a year and I still wouldn't have any colour. I really envy those who have the most perfect golden tans with no white bits.

I had to look up nasal tanning sprays but apparently they contain Melanotan II which is banned in medical products in the UK so will stick to the St Tropez fake tan!

CrispieCake · 14/08/2025 14:34

I'm pale, pasty and lazy.

This year, I have a tanned face and arms just from dropping the kids off at school and holiday club, and generally walking around a bit, because I cba to put sunscreen on for 10 minutes or so out in the sun. Kids are slathered in all day factor 50, of course, but by the time I've done the two of them all over, I can't be bothered to do me too.

I don't sunbathe and wear long sleeves and cream everything visible if I'm going to be out for a while (e.g. sports day/picnic/day out), so the tan is really just from running errands and dropping off/collecting kids.

PigletSanders · 14/08/2025 14:55

“No such thing as a healthy tan”.

I refuse to tan. I want skin health, and also to avoid aging.

I wear a mineral block daily, even in winter, top it up regularly, and fake tan once a week with a very expensive and good quality one. I have a ‘deep tan’ year round.

Wexone · 14/08/2025 14:57

Working farm here - Husband is very brown from working outside, always wears sun cream and a hat, but we have had the best summer here in a long time, not super warm but little rain. I help out and also out walking dogs even i have got a bit of a colour even though i work inside at my desk, i do like teh sun as it helps my aches and pains but dont get time to sit out. I do however wear fake tan all year round, fake tan is huge, nearly everyone i know uses it in some way, be it gradual tan tan drops or full on glow

BauhausOfEliott · 14/08/2025 14:57

It mostly will be fake. People get professional spray tans which if done well, are very even.

Also some people use tanning drops mixed into moisturiser / body lotion etc and it builds up over time pretty evenly, especially on top of a natural tan.

I am very, very pale and look weird with a tan, so I don't do it, but most of my friends do some sort of fake tanning and mostly it looks really even and natural. None of them use sunbeds or actively try to sunbathe, ever.

Fourteenandahalf · 14/08/2025 13:35

I think more people are doing those nasal tans or oral drops. The women at my gym are doing.

That whaty what now?

Hayley1256 · 14/08/2025 14:59

Garnier gradual tanning lotion - doesn't leave streaks or marks on anything. It's amazing!

Acropolis49 · 14/08/2025 15:01

Jab-a-tan

DelilahMy · 14/08/2025 15:01

It's something to do with actually having a summer this year.

You can be mindful of skin cancer but sunlight is good for you.

Lazydaze123 · 14/08/2025 15:01

I presume good weather and more people going on Sun holidays.
I did meet a client a few weeks ago whom runs a Sun bed business, he rents them out privately he has about 50 of them, he said business is booming. He drops them to people houses and collects them a few weeks/months later. Some clients he rents to all year round for a monthly rent. Seems lots of people don’t want to be seen going into tanning studios but happy to do it from home.

kirinm · 14/08/2025 15:05

I’ve got Indian heritage and am usually very pale and I can burn. From a very unexpected bit of sun whilst camping in Devon (in 14c) in May, I got a bit burnt on my face and since then, even though I’m sat inside most of the time due to work etc I’ve got browner and browner.

Im very conscious of it as my ‘brown’ is a sort of orange fake tab colour. We are going on holiday next week so it’ll be factor 50 all the way but I was so dark when we returned last year I was embarrassed. I have a small child and do not sunbathe.

Blondebrownorred · 14/08/2025 15:05

I have a deep tan. I've been abroad, have never used a sunbed or fake tan.

Jamesblonde2 · 14/08/2025 15:12

I’ve not noticed it, but then I work with people indoors most of the day. My DH does sport outdoors and potters in the garden so he is brown. I don’t tan. Too blonde/fair. I use a bit of gradual fake tan else I just look rubbish when wearing summer clothes.

HostaCentral · 14/08/2025 15:14

We've had a good summer, we now look a bit like the rest of Europe. It's only the Brits who obsess about staying out of the sun and covering their kids up. Sensible gradual exposure has been possible this year due to the sun being out since April. Here in South West Surrey we've had pretty much wall to wall sunshine, it's rained twice, and everything is brown and crispy including us!

HostaCentral · 14/08/2025 15:17

Oh, and you can always tell fake tans, as the neck and backs of knees and insides of arms will be brown..... Which don't naturally catch the sun with normal sunbathing.

LadybugsAndSunshine · 14/08/2025 15:21

I’m really tanned at the moment, my step daughter bought me some Shine Brown tan excelerator, I don’t know how it works but it definitely does the job.

Coffeeishot · 14/08/2025 15:23

minipie · 14/08/2025 13:14

I see a lot of uniformly golden young women around - no bikini marks etc. I reckon they are getting spray tans.

I think so, my neighbours older teenage dd is golden its more than likely fake.

Edited

The inside of my arms are brown as is my neck, I wear sun screen and don't sunbathe just caught a tan when out and about.

museumum · 14/08/2025 15:29

I wear factor 50 whenever I’m out but I still have tanned arms and legs this year. See me in a swimsuit and you’ll see my back is still lily white as it’s uk tan not a beach tan.

sHREDDIES19 · 14/08/2025 15:37

Not me! I generally stay inside when it's really sunny and stayed in the shade on holiday. I am pale and won't tan in a day/few days so I tend to avoid to protect my skin. I do think young people are regressing and going back to tanning. Social media misinformation doesn't help as sun cream is apparently 'toxic'.
