I've always been 5 foot 6. Today I was measured at a medical centre and they told me I was 5 foot 4. The last time I was measured was 5 years ago and I was still 5 foot 6. I am going to double check my height

If they made a mistake and I am what I measured myself as thus morning, the. I am 5 foot 5 and a half and I sometimes wear heels of 2 and a half Ilnches which would make me 5 ft 7 and a half which makes me extremely hapoy

Don’t gauge your height based on other people. Everyone’s always telling me I’m 5’10, because I’m the same height or slightly taller than all the 5’10 men I know. Except I’m not. I’m a whisker over 5’9 if I stand up straight and it’s first thing in the morning. If I’ve been slouching around all day and I’m tired, more like 5’8.5

I've always admired tall women. I would be absolutely devastated if I was short

You are what you are. Why does having some height or other recorded at the doctor's matter? People you meet don't have access to what height the Doc thinks!

I used to be the same height as DCs. I'm not now but I'm old.

KimberleyClark · 31/07/2025 09:50

I’m 64 and 5ft 1.5, as I have been all my adult life. I hope I don’t shrink, I don’t want to be any shorter than I already am.

A girl I went to school with was very tall and she did some modeling for a clothes catalogue. Twiggy was and still is 5 ft 6 and was a super model in the 60s. Nowadays they dont accept women under 5 ft 9.

jumpingthehighjump · 31/07/2025 10:50

How do you know Twiggy is still 5ft6? She's similar age to me, bet you she's shrunk a bit too, unless you have access to her medical records you wouldn't know.

My friend is 4ft11, size 1.5 feet... she is quite happy with her height. You should be too.

herbalteabag · 31/07/2025 11:16

I haven't shrunk yet I don't think. I'm in my 50s. My mum has because she used to be 4 inches taller than me and now we're pretty much the same size!

PerkyOchrePeer · 31/07/2025 12:09

I've just phoned the place where I got measured and told them it's wrong si they are looking into it.

No one you know will know what the medical centre measured you as, so what does it matter?

I have no idea what height I am. Don't care. Have shrunk a bit, just happy to be healthy

Sahara123 · 31/07/2025 12:30

I’ve barely been 5’ 2” all my life, I’ve probably shrunk a bit now at 65 but there’s not a lot I can do about it !

LillyPJ · 31/07/2025 12:33

Did you query it when they said 5'4"? Anyway, you are the height you are and what's written down makes no difference. You seem over concerned about height but it really doesn't matter.

DiscoBob · 31/07/2025 12:33

Everyone shrinks. My mum is now 4'10 and used to be 5'2. I brokey hip and one leg is shorter than the other so I've lost an inch!

Gravity takes its toll. The stuff in your spine wears away or something, kind of making the bones closer together? I'm not sure if that's literally it but something along those lines.

How can they look into it ?! Just get measured again next time you go. 🤷‍♀️
What difference does it make, it is what it is !

Yes I was slouching because I Ve got a bad back. If they were doing their job properly they would have seen I was slouching and told british stand more upright. I reched it again at home this morning.Standing bolt uprght using a tape measure And it said I was 5 foot 5 and a 1/2 So I'm going to phone my GP surgery and have that recorded and double checked at the doctor's office. I'm not going to take what happened yesterday. As the reading

So you were slouching, knew you were, for some bizarre reason you think that your height is very important, but you chose not to stand up straight or tell them you have a bad back. Yet they're the ones in the wrong? Ok.

What a total waste of time and resources.

Just as age is just a number, height is just a number.

Tell people you are 5ft7 if that makes you feel better!

CastorPollux · 31/07/2025 12:44

'Shrinking' is common with age. My dad has noticeably shrunk a couple of inches in the last few years to the point I am now taller than him at 5'7.

cofffeeee · 31/07/2025 12:48

I worry about shrinking in my old age im 4f`11 now if i shrink no one will find me.

What a stupid comment, honestly get a grip. Does it actually matter what the measurement is ?

Yes it does. Sane as it matters to some women who straighten their hair or some women who want to get a tan or some women who diet or colour their hair when it goes grey. And when you have been used to a certain height which is not short a d you start shrinking, you find it hard getting used to it. It's a different matter when you have only been short because as the saying goes what you've never had you don't miss. 5 foot 6 is not tall but it's certainly not short and ypu can be about 5 foot 8 with heels which is a bonus for women. Being short has disadvantages especially in the supermarket reaching stuff from things off shelves you can't reach

bindin · 31/07/2025 13:56

People shrink as they age & posture deteriorates

Surely you would have noticed by now if you suddenly can’t reach things in the supermarket anymore due to shrinking ? Or do you need to take measurements of your height to determine this

You say this. ^^
No, it isn't hard getting used to it. Not the slightest and who knows what your height is measured by the Doctor ?? No-one, so what does it matter?

It's like anything to do with ageing. It happens. Yes, you can keep dying your hair. Yes, you can keep slim by exercise but you can't make yourself taller than you are!!!!!

It's just a number in your head. I think you need some therapy to move on from this because it's ridiculous. Everything you talk about is in your head. Has your mother, sibling, friend said "oooh you are short".
Obviously not!

I didn't want to shrink but I'm old so it happens. I'm just glad to be happy and relatively healthy.

Move on from this and start enjoying your life and not fixating on what height you are in numbers. Because whatever height you are, you can't change it.
