Unisex toilets in new office - dread going into work

The company I work for moved to a new office a few weeks ago. It is brand new and shared 50/50 with another company. We have our own side of the floor, key card protected so completely separate.

However, the toilets are in the middle of the block so are shared with the other company. These are unisex - several cubicles with shared area for sinks/dryers etc.

The other company is a sales one (they run a call centre there) and the demographic of their workforce is mainly young men in their 20’s.

There have been several instances of inappropriate comments made to staff in the toilets. Crass stuff like ‘give that cubicle 5 minutes’ to cruder comments directed at or about women - the men will often be talking about their own colleagues in a derogatory way in front of us.

The final straw for me was this afternoon when I walked out of a cubicle and a spotty young lad said he will ‘join me next time’ 😷

Our company are aware of our concerns but said there’s nothing they can do, as the toilets are designed to be ‘inclusive’ and similar to the other modern office blocks they viewed.

I don’t really know what I’m looking for by posting this to be honest, just wanted to know if anyone else finds this sort of set up completely ridiculous?

OP. Make up some, male, female and unisex signs. Go in early and badge the doors. You may find the problem is then solved.

It seems that you do realise that “biological women’s” (women, they don’t come in two sexes, they’re all female) rights don’t align with “trans rights” - tut tut. Best report for reeducation.

My advice - make a complaint in writing to HR and insist on a response in writing. I imagine that will be a bit of a shot across the bows. And contact ACAS. The employer can’t fob you off, they are responsible for your wellbeing at work and this is a situation they’ve created by renting this unsuitable space.

Do you really not see the irony of / hypocrisy in supporting OP, but then saying trans women should just use male bathrooms?

Transwomen are men and should use the facilities according to their sex. How is that hypocritical?

Anyway, this is a pointless derail. “Trans women” aren’t the only male people to invade women’s privacy, other men do it too in mixed sex spaces which give them that opportunity, and this is about that scenario, and illustrates why single sex toilets are the preferred option for most women and girls.

The same way the cats protection league isn't anti badger. Having a charitable aim targetted to one group says nothing about the charity's views on any other group, as other groups are irrelevant to the charity. A charity for biological women isn't anti trans, unless it makes a point of excluding transmen simply because they're trans.

OP is a woman. Trans women are men. Its pretty straightforward unless you are either stupid or malign.

How is a 'charity' that only fights for biological women's rights not anti trans?

'Charity' is a legal and financial status. It's doesn't mean they support anyone who wants to be supported by them.

Are you confused with terminology. Trans women are biological men right? They should petition for their own spaces if they don’t want to use correct sex facilities. Transmen are biological women and welcome in the Ladies.
