To be the only ones with open windows

From my bedroom window I can see the rear windows of 7 houses. All houses are the same style 2 up 2 down so I know some of the rooms I can see most be used as bedrooms but not a single one has a window open. I’ve noticed this for the past couple of weeks.

It’s similar at the front. Larger houses so I wouldn’t know what’s a bedroom, but still only the odd window cracked open.

We have pretty much every upstairs window flung open all night, and even when it’s colder we still like our bedroom window open a bit.

I get keeping them closed through the day when it’s hot, but at night?

Am I the odd one here?

Well I can't sleep in a bedroom without the window open so mine is open at night winter and summer.
When the weather's warm I also open the windows in the other two bedrooms at night - I live alone- and leave the bedroom doors open so the air can circulate.
In the downstairs rooms the bathroom and kitchen windows are kept open on the crack virtually all year all the time, apart from in really cold or severe weather.
But yes OP I notice a lot of homes never seem to have bedroom windows, or any other windows for that matter, open.

ilovelamp82 · 09/07/2025 07:10

I would love to but my neighbours chain smoke all day and night into my kids bedrooms so we can't. It's torture. Will be moving as soon as I am able.

2025mustbebetter · 09/07/2025 07:11

Same here op. I have a 3 storey house and the top floor windows are always open in summer even when we're not in. I have 1st floor windows open whenever we're home and actually if I'm just popping out they stay open. When it's really hot I do shut all windows and blinds though. But honestly no one round here opens their windows. Maybe they a have little air conditioning units?

Cakeandcheeseforever · 09/07/2025 07:12

I’m the same, I open all my windows but notice a lot of neighbours never do or have blinds down permanently. I don’t have net curtains either, don’t like them. Carry on doing your thing, your house will be better ventilated and fresher feeling for it

ThymeandBasil · 09/07/2025 07:14

Oh that is horrendous for you @ilovelamp82
I've had to move house in the past because of neighbour's smoking habits so I totally sympathise.

Poonu · 09/07/2025 07:16

I noticed that too

TranceNation · 09/07/2025 07:16

I'm a light sleeper and can't have windows open at night or else the birds chirping would wake me at 5am. Windows closed blinds down during the day in the heatwave is the way to go though. We then open up around 7.30ish.

Doncarlos · 09/07/2025 07:19

Oh god @ilovelamp82 that sounds awful. 😞

Im very lucky that all my neighbours are decent and respectful of each other. But yes, I have also noticed there’s a few that never open blinds either.

I was actually staring to think I must be weird having windows open whenever possible so glad to see I’m not alone.
I love when it’s a bit colder and you can feel a cool breeze float in, but just pull the duvet up and snuggle in. Bliss.

I don't leave the bedroom window open overnight unless it's really hot. It'll be 24 degrees here over the weekend so it'll need to be open then.

Sprogonthetyne · 09/07/2025 07:20

Do you snor really badly or have very loud sex?

StMarie4me · 09/07/2025 07:24

We have indoor cats so can’t have windows wide open. They are all on that open just a crack and latched setting! I would love open windows but not worth the risk for the cats.

trailmx · 09/07/2025 07:24

It seems you’re the odd one out where you live.

Lots of reasons why people may choose to keep windows closed, noise disturbance, insects, pollution dust etc. most windows will let in some outside air when they’re closed.

I’ve got air purifiers in all the rooms because of severe hay fever so have to keep them closed.

Get those flat cat screens so you can still open the windows - they were a game changer when we lived in a flat.

Bikergran · 09/07/2025 08:00

Are you a Northerner who's moved South? I have to have some source of outside air in the bedroom all the year round, and in the summer open lots of windows, but my Londoner husband only opens windows grudgingly. The cheapest air freshener to my mind is fresh air!!!

Ilovelowry · 09/07/2025 08:03

We have ours open all night at this time of year.

My house is absolutely freezing right now, it's lovely. (south).

About to go around and shut everything up before the temperature warms up.

I love waking up to the birds and the smell of the summer and the dawn skies. We sleep with blinds up too.

Sw1989 · 09/07/2025 08:04

We have our bedroom windows open all year round as our 1930s semi is well insulated and just too warm otherwise. I hate not being able to open the bedroom window at night and the only time I close them is in very heavy wind or rain as we're on quite a busy road. I have a family member who lives in a new build and won't open any windows as she's scared insects will get in, which seems nuts to me as the house is always like a sauna.

I was going to say that too. They stick on with Velcro, really easy to install & very hardwearing - they’ve even survived some of my cats climbing on them.

My bedroom window is open all year round. Every window open all day at the moment- I live in a second floor flat so perfectly safe. It's lovely.

MiddleAgedDread · 09/07/2025 08:06

Oh I was wondering the same too! I assumed they were away as all windows have been closed in the glorious weather but he was outside washing the car yesterday so clearly not! I hate stuffy rooms that haven’t been aired and it’s forecast to be 27 degrees here today so I’m getting the house as cool as possible early.

ByLemonFish · 09/07/2025 08:07

I open all my windows every morning, unless it's windy or very wet they stay open until late in day . My bedroom window is never closed
I've noticed neighbours rarely or never open windows

Wilfrida1 · 09/07/2025 08:08

Bedroom windows open all year round here, too. But I wonder if noise affects some more than others, or they have air conditioning?

SoftLass · 09/07/2025 08:11

Funny you should say that, I'm a northerner living down south and I'm the only person who ever opens windows in my house!
i can't have bedroom windows open at night though otherwise I wake up with horrendous hay fever so I have them wide open all evening to cool the room. If I ask DH to open the windows he'll open one a crack and then close the curtains over it.

pushthebuttonnn · 09/07/2025 08:12

We can't open ours at the moment due to dh and dd 's hayfever. It's stuffy but not worth opening them due to their symptoms.

bellamorgan · 09/07/2025 08:17

Bedroom open all year. Our neighbour has suddenly closed theirs though as they are a light sleeper and I swear about 10 cockerels have moved in across the green.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 09/07/2025 08:18

I have my bedroom windows open pretty much from February until oct/Nov. I only shut them on very high pollen days as I have horrific hayfever or during a heatwave when I close windows and blinds to keep the warm air out.

I'm a southerner (well, south east, about 50 miles outside london) and everyone here also opens windows.
