To be the only ones with open windows

From my bedroom window I can see the rear windows of 7 houses. All houses are the same style 2 up 2 down so I know some of the rooms I can see most be used as bedrooms but not a single one has a window open. I’ve noticed this for the past couple of weeks.

It’s similar at the front. Larger houses so I wouldn’t know what’s a bedroom, but still only the odd window cracked open.

We have pretty much every upstairs window flung open all night, and even when it’s colder we still like our bedroom window open a bit.

I get keeping them closed through the day when it’s hot, but at night?

Am I the odd one here?

I've tried to have my windows open but either the birds (who I love) or an alarm wakes me up. So I sleep in a hot room.

Padamae · 09/07/2025 08:20

I’d love to sleep with all the windows open but my husband and daughter really struggle with hayfever if we do. We have a fan instead.

CandidRaven · 09/07/2025 08:25

I can't have the windows open because me and my younger children have very bad hayfever and it's absolutely miserable when none of us can breathe because of the pollen so we keep them closed and have a fan on instead

DayInTime · 09/07/2025 08:28

I always have as many windows as possible open during the day.

Night time, I hate the thought of insects and frequently get bitten.

JaninaDuszejko · 09/07/2025 08:30

I'm Scottish living in Northern England. All the windows are open at night, then closed if on the sunny side and the velux windows are open all day because heat rises and cold falls. Curtains shut if sun shining on that side.

I'm another that likes the bedroom window open all night even in the winter. DH grew up in a windows shut house, MIL grew tomatoes in her kitchen window once and was confused why she got no fruit, it was because no insect was allowed in the house.

Doggymummar · 09/07/2025 08:32

We are in a bungalow but I still have the windows open at night,

SleepingisanArt · 09/07/2025 08:35

Bedroom window closed at night when it's hot - aircon on. One side of the house gets the sun in the morning so windows and curtains closed and then swapped in the afternoon so the house remains at a bearable temperature (it's very well insulated!)

popcornpower2025 · 09/07/2025 08:37

I do if it's really hot but when the window is open the dog will bark at a fox fart a mile away so it's easier to keep them closed. I'll have them open all evening though to cool the room down then open them in the morning for a bit

Deadringer · 09/07/2025 08:40

My windows are open all day every day but closed at night. I am a light sleeper and between cars going by and seagulls squawking I wouldn't get a wink of sleep with the window open.

Swapozorro · 09/07/2025 09:10

I’ve noticed this too! When it’s a scorching hot day I keep the windows and blinds down that are directly in sunlight but everything else is wide open. At night when it finally cools down all my windows and doors get flung open yet the other houses are either closed or only open a crack?! Maybe they all have air con.

Doncarlos · 09/07/2025 09:21

Not a northerner, lived south all my life.

I will admit that it's taken me a while to accept that windows being closed on hot days is for the best. I begrudgingly conceded and now they're closed until early evening when it's really hot outside with the curtain drawn enough to block the direct sunlight in some rooms, but I'd leave them open all the time otherwise.

I totally get some of the reasoning now, with severe hay fever, etc. That must be horrible.

It did also occur to me that those seagulls are in full protective parent mode at the moment and making an absolute racket from pretty early on. I was awake at 5 this morning and recall hearing them before that, so maybe that's why.

I keep my windows closed and blinds because it keeps the heat out !
And as a hayfever sufferer it reduces the pollen inside the house !
I will open when it’s cold and I can get a wind tunnel of air blowing thou .
i do have a positive air unit so I always have fresh air despite no open windows though 😊

Yesterdaytodaytomorrowagain · 09/07/2025 09:44

Can’t imagine the smell from not having a window open! I love the fresh air coming in. Not exactly scorching here in Scotland today and all my windows are wide open!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 09/07/2025 09:50

Mine are open all day every day but closed at night. I live by a wood and would get all sorts of beasties and bats in otherwise. The house is well aired as windows are open all day.

Nannyfannybanny · 09/07/2025 09:58

During Covid we were encouraged to open the windows, and because of damp etc. my nextdoor neighbours, don't open windows or blinds or curtains, both of them. They don't have air conditioning or even a fan. I find it very bizarre. This time of year, open all the time we're in, definitely at night.

Cattery · 09/07/2025 10:01

Windows open all year round. Couldn’t imagine not. As a pp said to feel the breeze on you during the night is lovely. Neighbours over the back from us windows never open nor the curtains. I don’t get it. Must stink in there.

Newmeagain · 09/07/2025 10:10

I am in London and open my windows during the day but close them at night as there is always some noise late at night or in the morning. Would love to live somewhere where I could keep them open.

Modernme · 09/07/2025 10:32

All my windows are open all year round 24/7.
Day and night.
I cant stand them closed.

RareMaker · 09/07/2025 10:35

Mine are shut as have aircon on.

RareMaker · 09/07/2025 10:35

I do open in early hours and morning though. Till the sun moves around

Ormally · 09/07/2025 10:38

Love a window open, and do not enjoy temps over about 24, but when it's really hot, like recently, it's become more of a case of opening the windows on the side that is in shade, in the morning, and mostly closing blinds or curtains on the other side, or the air that comes in will be simply warm or hot. There is a glass side panel next to the front door; although I have never had to do this before, I have added some sugar paper to it on the inside as a temporary/desperate measure and even that has had a clear effect on reducing the heat that can warm up the hall.

In the evening, there can be noise and often barbeque smoke, and sometimes traffic hold-ups nearby which give a petrolly feel to where I am, so that can affect air quality then.

pushthebuttonnn · 09/07/2025 08:12

We can't open ours at the moment due to dh and dd 's hayfever. It's stuffy but not worth opening them due to their symptoms.

I'm always opening windows and drilled the same into my children. Adult DD developed hayfever this year and was told to shut the windows.

BallerinaRadio · 09/07/2025 10:46

Some people sleep with their windows open. Some don't. I can't believe you'd even begin to think there was anything unreasonable about this

TallulahBetty · 09/07/2025 10:47

My window is always open at night - even in winter, although it's only on the 'latch'/nightlock. I can't stand a stuffy bedroom

Lurkingandlearning · 09/07/2025 10:51

I open mine at the crack of dawn when it’s cool. Once it gets hot outside, it’s cooler to keep the windows and blinds closed. Maybe your neighbours are doing the same.
