To be the only ones with open windows

From my bedroom window I can see the rear windows of 7 houses. All houses are the same style 2 up 2 down so I know some of the rooms I can see most be used as bedrooms but not a single one has a window open. I’ve noticed this for the past couple of weeks.

It’s similar at the front. Larger houses so I wouldn’t know what’s a bedroom, but still only the odd window cracked open.

We have pretty much every upstairs window flung open all night, and even when it’s colder we still like our bedroom window open a bit.

I get keeping them closed through the day when it’s hot, but at night?

Am I the odd one here?

I'd love all windows open but the hay-fever sufferers in the house can't cope eith the pollen. They need to stay shut.

Everyone on here needs to stop watching their neighbours lol. Many reasons

  1. allegeric to pollen keeping windows shut helps
  2. they have an indoor air conditioning system or fans in every room
  3. they believe keeping windows shut keeps out warm air
  4. keeping the curtains/ blinds shut blocks out the heat
  5. the street is too noisy they don’t want to open their windows

Bedroom windows open all year round, no heating, can’t sleep in a warm room. I draw the curtains in the afternoon atm when then sun moves round in an attempt to keep the heat out.

We have indoor cats so can’t have windows wide open. They are all on that open just a crack and latched setting! I would love open windows but not worth the risk for the cats.

We can't open ours at the moment due to dh and dd 's hayfever. It's stuffy but not worth opening them due to their symptoms.

This is where I am with hayfever, it is so bad this year. Plus we are on the edge of town and there are lots of things that can fly into the cottage along with the hayfever stuff.

I keep my windows closed at night as otherwise I would have an even worse nights sleep with neighbours coming home late and talking loudly, bikers roaring along the nearby dual carriageway, yapping dogs and screechy children early in the morning, the noisy Tesco van doing home deliveries at 7am, and because I have a blackout blind to keep the early morning sun out of my bedroom in order to improve sleep, which renders opening the window pretty useless. In recent days it has made little difference whether my windows are open or closed in the late evening. Several times it has been 24C before I opened windows upstairs and downstairs, three hours later it was still 24C because the air outside is dead calm and there is absolutely no airflow through the house.

YABU to be paying such close attention to your neighbours - why do you care? Could be any number of reasons. Get a hobby.

+Modern windows have trickle vents so you don't need to open them to get the recommended amount of ventilation.

Open windows heat up ones home in a heat wave.

I've tried leaving the windows closed, came back home yesterday, from walking the dogs,it was like an inferno.. with the windows and curtains closed, horrible. We leave in a quiet village,so it's not noisy. I've never had any moths or insects flying in overnight.. the neighbours don't even have a fan,we treated ourselves to a proper portable air conditioning unit. When you live nextdoor to someone many years, you can't help but notice,no curtains, blinds or windows are open, ever! Surely it must smell.

You must live in the middle of an acre of concrete devoid of all life if you've never had insects fly inside open windows at night.

You can reduce the amount by turning the lights off but some will come in eventually.

HAHA, really people are desperate to be offended about anything on here.

It's called conversation, based on an observation. I'm hardly getting my binoculars out and making a flow chart. Although technically that probably would be a hobby.

I’m not offended by your thread, but I do think it’s an odd thing to take notice of. Who cares? Enjoy your open windows. I can’t open mine as much as I’d like because of the local persist pot smoker down the road. Perhaps I need to stick a sign on my house so nosey neighbours know why.

ayepecking · 10/07/2025 13:05

I was brought up with the open window "policy" and I don't think it's healthy to sleep in a room when you are not breathing in fresh air. We have our bedroom window open all year round overnight.

Nannyfannybanny · 10/07/2025 13:07

Nope,no concrete jungle. We have a lot of spiders, and every morning I vacuum dead flies from the window sills. There was about a dozen today. Although the bedroom window is open the Venetian blinds are shut.

MarchingOnTogether · 10/07/2025 13:36

I'd love to keep mine open more but with an autistic teen who's terrified of bugs and a neighbour who smokes weed its better keeping them shut most of the time!

WhistlingStraits · 10/07/2025 13:38

We have every window open as wide as possible. Sides, back, front - lovely bit of cross flow ventilation going on.
