This is the colour… https://www.farrow-ball.com/paint/coppice-blue

Farrow and ball coppice blue.

Should we use gloss or modern eggshell?!?!

It’s from the archive so I need to order it online. Preferably soon or it’s never getting done this summer. 😅 And I am in decision paralysis! Help please 🙏

YABU - Gloss
YANBU - Eggshell

Coppice Blue No.G9 | Handcrafted Paint

Coppice Blue is a rich deep teal paint colour which creates a dramatic feel in contemporary hallways and living rooms. Available in-store and online.

That’s a beautiful colour. Eggshell everytine for me I’m really not a fan of gloss but I don’t know if one is more hard wearing than the other.

CoffeeCantata · 24/06/2025 12:02

Eggshell is nicer, I think.

OP - is your door south-facing? Ours is, and gets baking hot in summer. I prefer a dark shade for the front door but for years we had blistered paint as a result. I've had to accept that to avoid this we needed a much lighter colour whcih reflects rather than absorbs the sun's heat.

No problems since going paler!

That’s something to consider! We are north facing though for front door but wanted to do some of the garage door in matching colour which is more in the sun.

Whilst I have you wise people here 🤣

Our door is like this.. do you think we should paint the whole thing or just the actual door. I don’t like the white boundary.

Just the door. The trim around it matches your windows.

And my vote is always for eggshell.

Annascaul · 24/06/2025 12:17

Eggshell, definitely. Keep the surround white.

namechangedforvalidreasons · 24/06/2025 12:18

Eggshell all the time. Gloss is also an arsehole to apply.

Davros · 24/06/2025 12:19

Gloss

Absolutely a matter of personal taste - we live in an area with a lot of period properties and I’ve seen a lot of people match the surround recently. Whereas my hip NDN had the colour drench for some years and they’ve just gone back to the white surround. I would just keep the white, myself, as it’s less work than painting multiple coats on a surround and also a classic look which ties in with the windows. However, are you a neat painter, you’ll have a lot of taping…

witchesfly · 24/06/2025 12:28

Keep it white for the surround.
Gloss finish, looks smarter.
Just in the process of painting a red door black. Third coat to apply once the rain stops...

Shetlands · 24/06/2025 12:33

Eggshell - fabulous shade of blue!
Paint the surround white.

Black is the only colour I'd use gloss for (and maybe red).

AlwaysFreezing · 24/06/2025 12:35

I think gloss is due a revival and you'd be ahead of the curve. Matt is everywhere!

ruethewhirl · 24/06/2025 12:39

Lovely colour! I vote eggshell.

BuntyBeaufort · 24/06/2025 12:45

After a couple of years of weathering gloss would start to look like eggshell anyway, so best of both worlds.

CointreauVersial · 24/06/2025 12:48

Gloss.

Doors get a lot of grubby fingers round the edges, where people pull it closed, and gloss will be the most hard-wearing and easy to clean. I bitterly regret using white eggshell on our interior doors.

ZenNudist · 24/06/2025 12:52

Gloss. Eggshell is not hard wearing

Parsleysalad · 24/06/2025 12:54

Eggshell and to the person asking about the door frame, keep it white!

Tealtroubles · 24/06/2025 12:58

If I had these doors next to one another and it was a ‘thing’ I would defo go for white. But we are the only house on the street with a door like this. It’s recessed also into a curved porch thing too. So doesn’t really speak with the windows. The white just looks bitty. Plus all the white needs redoing anyway 😭 This is going to be a big job I feel.

I've always had gloss for front doors, but this time round I wished after that I'd gone for eggshell. I think it's more modern.

Outofthemoonlight · 24/06/2025 14:26

You don’t need to get it online- Leyland, Brewers or any trade decorator’s store will match any F&B paint color in Dulux Trade.

outerspacepotato · 24/06/2025 14:27

If it's recessed I would go for gloss.

ReproachfulOwl · 24/06/2025 14:33

Gloss and paint the surround.

Blodyneighbour · 24/06/2025 15:22

DEFINITELY gloss. Especially for an exterior door. Eggshell is more interior or exterior walls. Gloss it!!

Delphinium20 · 24/06/2025 15:25

Gloss all the way. It’s much easier to clean.
