This is the colour… https://www.farrow-ball.com/paint/coppice-blue

Farrow and ball coppice blue.

Should we use gloss or modern eggshell?!?!

It’s from the archive so I need to order it online. Preferably soon or it’s never getting done this summer. 😅 And I am in decision paralysis! Help please 🙏

YABU - Gloss
YANBU - Eggshell

Coppice Blue No.G9 | Handcrafted Paint

Coppice Blue is a rich deep teal paint colour which creates a dramatic feel in contemporary hallways and living rooms. Available in-store and online.

Gloss generally last longer outside, but I would choose something lighter if south facing.

SapporoBaby · 24/06/2025 15:35

Eggshell. Front doors shouldn’t look like interior doors which gloss does to me

TonTonMacoute · 24/06/2025 15:36

I prefer the look of eggshell but having had a lot of work done on the house a year ago, I think gloss is way more hard wearing, and that's what I would go for..

UnsocialMedia · 24/06/2025 18:14

For a Victorian or Edwardian house I'd go gloss, eggshell for anything else.

Margery80 · 24/06/2025 18:15

Definitely paint the architrave (spelling?) the same colour as the door. That's what F&B recommend. - or Paddy who does all the videos on their Instagram.

WhereAreWeNow · 24/06/2025 18:17

I love gloss front doors. I'm not keen on the matt trend. Seems really popular round my way but I just think gloss looks really smart.

crackofdoom · 24/06/2025 18:21

As a professional, I would advise gloss for outside. It's harder wearing.

nine9nein · 24/06/2025 18:28

All my neighbours have matt or eggshell of varying blue and green heritage shades... mine is black gloss and absolutely looks the smartest on the road.

TizerorFizz · 24/06/2025 18:33

@Tealtroubles Farrow and Ball exterior eggshell for wood is very hard wearing. It’s difficult to chip and your door won’t get grubby! The poster is totally wrong about F&B eggshell.

Gloss is more difficult to apply and I’d only use it for black. Like No 10! Generally eggshell is much easier and very tough.

Davros · 24/06/2025 18:53

My personal preference is for traditional doors to be painted gloss - black, dark red, dark green. And not to paint the outside part. I also hate dark matte window frames etc. it’s a shame you don’t have some panels to install some traditional stained glass. But I’m sure my taste is not for everyone

Wouldthisbotheryoutoo · 24/06/2025 19:13

Do it all inc surround in gloss

Anjo2011 · 24/06/2025 19:44

Another vote for eggshell.

I've always had gloss for front doors, but this time round I wished after that I'd gone for eggshell. I think it's more modern.

It might be modern but gloss has more class. Would the famous No10 door look the same in eggshell, no!!!!

BlueMum16 · 24/06/2025 20:10

I'd probably go for gloss. Could you do the surround grey? I wouldn't do the same as the door colour.

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 24/06/2025 20:13

Eggshell

I'm a fan of painting the surround to match the door 🙌

SisterTeatime · 24/06/2025 20:14

Gloss for a front door every time! Even if F&B gloss is challenging to use, it looks great.

IvyNeighbour · 24/06/2025 20:18

Definitely gloss. I had eggshell on my front door and it wasn't hard-wearing enough, it's now gloss and in much better condition.

isitme111 · 24/06/2025 20:22

Beautiful colour - Gloss

Crikeyisthatthetime · 24/06/2025 20:22

If you want the frame to match the door, do that. You don't need to please us lot, just yourself. You'll please half of us whichever you do 😉

Louisa58 · 24/06/2025 20:23

I’ve always used an exterior eggshell (F&B or LG) for my front door and window frames but suffer the elements here so am going to go gloss next time to hopefully reduce the times having to repaint every few years. That colour is glorious ! I honestly think I’d go for gloss (surround also) as I think it’ll look really smart against your door furniture. I’d love to see a photo of the finished door whichever finish you decide on !

AgathaX · 24/06/2025 20:32

Exterior eggshell with the surround painted the same colour.

TizerorFizz · 24/06/2025 21:15

@IvyNeighbour Eggshell specifically made for exterior woodwork is very hardwearing. It’s water based too.

Some gloss is oil based but F&B is water based. Both would be hard wearing. Some gloss doors outside can be great but style of door and grandness of the house matter somewhat. You cannot make a door look like No10 just by using gloss paint.

mycatismyworld · 24/06/2025 21:34

Gloss,I had a beautiful damson coloured door, really glossy and everyone used to say how lovely it looked. After about 15 years I got bored of it and painted it goldfish orange eggshell. It looks so tired and dingy now.

AirborneElephant · 24/06/2025 22:18

Beautiful colour. White surround, gloss. I love the look of eggshell but my goodness does it show up grubby finger marks, oil and dirt ect. Gloss will look much fresher for longer.

Outrageistheopiateofthemasses · 24/06/2025 22:20

Gloss with a white surround. Gorgeous colour by the way
