So the bin men broke our bin. Just gobbled the lid. Hardly that deep.

Rung the council to request a new lid. Nope, don’t do them. Ok.
New bin.. yes but we can only give you a 140L skinny bin (previously a normal size 240L).
We said sorry that won’t work for us. Don’t worry we will buy a bin.
We are not allowed to buy a bin.

Much confusion. Multiple calls. All jobsworths. Stalk the street. Many an unbranded bin so I think we will be fine. Buy a bin. But ours is shiny.

I have thought about rubbing mud on it but then that’s not nice for the bin men so shiny it is.

Will they take it? Big mystery.

And if not then I have no idea what we are supposed to do. But I will worry about tomorrow.

Good luck! When I had 2 kids in nappies I was ‘allowed’ a bigger bin. But the council had to come and check in person that I really did have two small children

Could you fit the lid from the new bin to the old bin?

DP had spanner’s out. We have taken an old bin lid from allotment. Also unbranded and with a hole in the lid as it had a drainpipe in it. We tried to attach that and it is hapzardly on the old bin but would likely get gobbled also in the long run. Plus even though it’s technically same bin. Now it would be a pseudo imposter bin as the lid is the branding where we are.

So we ummed and ahhed and just bought a new bin. Because that seems like the most sane thing to do.

Funny how everyone else manages with a skinny bin! Do you not recycle or something?

We recycle everything we can. Luckily have weekly skinny bin collections but it’s always rammed full. Couldn’t manage 2 weeks

Anonbindrama · 18/06/2025 22:24

Ahh thank you so much Mumsnet! I am hoping the collective prayers for shiny bin bring good omens 😅

We had bin gate. Live in a county where we have always had to provide our own. Had a 240L bin they would empty by hand. Received 140L last year but weren’t allowed to use until told so as they’d be bringing new shiny bin lorries to lift and empty - hello modern world!

Used new 140L bin early and they refused to empty by hand even though they would empty bigger 240L bins by hand. We could have a privately owned one of either size and they would empty but wouldn’t empty their own branded smaller one until the official date 🤦🏼‍♀️

Place marking because I live for this shit.

100%

ILoveAllAnimals · 18/06/2025 22:27

The bin men broke our garden bin lid. It went out as normal and came back split on both sides? I didn't even try to get a new one. At least the neighbours don't try to pinch it! Our main bin kept going missing, in a particularly bad mood I painted our house number on the bin in gloss paint. It didn't go missing again and the neighbours all started putting house numbers on their bins too! DH was horrified.

Clafoutie · 18/06/2025 22:28

Perhaps it is one of those situations where imposter bin brings disease to the native colony. Your bin could be patient zero OP and you have no notion that you’re gambling with the health of Bindom 😯

Tandora · 18/06/2025 22:28

Ahh OP I’m praying for you and your bin tomorrow but I have fears… especially if your bin men are anything like ours

MauriceTheMussel · 18/06/2025 22:28

Place marking and praying

LeftieRightsHoarder · 18/06/2025 22:29

More power to your bin, OP! Fingers crossed for tomorrow 😀

Friend moved into a house that had a 2 bin allowance for the previous owners. 2 big bins!! 😮 they’ve kept using them and no one said anything ever.

She won the fucking bin lottery.

Fuck this for a first response. I’m glad everyone else is on side.

👏🏻 COME ON SHINY BIN!!! 👏🏻

BastardesEverywhere · 18/06/2025 22:33

The very concept of bins that the council empty (except the tiny food waste bin) seems bizarre to me. We don't have bins at all, in our entire County. How many black bags does a standard bin hold?

MauriceTheMussel · 18/06/2025 22:34

Your council sound awful! Ours come every week for black bag waste and recycling. The nice man waves at me, pulls out all our bags from a big ass bin and puts them in his own bin to take to the lorry. If they miss a collection/your house, you log it with the council and someone shows up 48 hours later

And we don’t have any of this “the lid must close or else we don’t take it wall nonsense

ThisOldThang · 18/06/2025 22:34

I phoned up to ask for a larger bin, but I was told they were only for five person houses. I tried to reason with them and I was told that if we all have bins that are too small, then we'll pressure supermarkets to reduce packaging and that will solve the problem.

They're just fucking deluded.

NewNewForest · 18/06/2025 22:36

Shamelessly bookmarking this as this kind of adventure is exactly what the internet was invented for. Absolutely rooting for the shiny bin of a stranger here way past my bedtime! Come on bin men, do the right and just thing!

Gummy7 · 18/06/2025 22:36

Fingers crossed here for you, hope the shiny bin gets emptied!

BunfightBetty · 18/06/2025 22:37

Rooting for you, OP.

This whole bin gate saga is so very quintessentially British council, isn’t it?

Why are some councils like this and others not?

We’ll have an all-night vigil OP 🕯
We shall overcome!

This is rousing.

I'm getting out of my bed right now to drag all our bins (that's all 4 of them) out to the kerbside in solidarity.

Raise them bin lids folks.
