So the bin men broke our bin. Just gobbled the lid. Hardly that deep.

Rung the council to request a new lid. Nope, don’t do them. Ok.
New bin.. yes but we can only give you a 140L skinny bin (previously a normal size 240L).
We said sorry that won’t work for us. Don’t worry we will buy a bin.
We are not allowed to buy a bin.

Much confusion. Multiple calls. All jobsworths. Stalk the street. Many an unbranded bin so I think we will be fine. Buy a bin. But ours is shiny.

I have thought about rubbing mud on it but then that’s not nice for the bin men so shiny it is.

Will they take it? Big mystery.

And if not then I have no idea what we are supposed to do. But I will worry about tomorrow.

Funny how everyone else manages with a skinny bin! Do you not recycle or something?

TheAutumnCrow · 18/06/2025 21:59

Will they be able to hook it onto the truck?

Anonbindrama · 18/06/2025 22:01

Everyone on the street and surrounding streets has the normal 240L bin.

A skinny bin only takes two black bags apparently. It’s collected every 2 weeks.

We do recycle as much as we can; over the capacity of a 240L bin - we always have a lag building up. We have two children in nappies. I am not sure how we are supposed to go from a jammed 240L bin to a 140.

I assume so. There are multiple unbranded bins up and down the street; and we have chosen a bin specifically which was ‘council standard’.

The only reason I am worrying about is if they refuse to take it out of principal of it not being their bin. Which I have been told will happen. Which makes no sense as the other bins seem to be emptied.

We have a 140L skinny bin and despite recycling so much the kitchen looks ridiculous come bin night by week 3 (with our one permitted bin bag per week) the bin is overstuffed and a magnet for mess. Drives me mad, good luck tomorrow!

Thank you for understanding 🙏

God speed to shiny bin 🤞

The people collecting the bins aren't the people who make the rules about which bins are allowed. As long as you're not making their job harder they won't care.

Good luck OP! 👀

promise to update us tomorrow ( I mean it, I genuinely get invested in things like this!) 😄

heldinadream · 18/06/2025 22:12

Aw mate. Total jobsworths.
You are NOT ALLOWED to have the thing you always had and that everyone else has and that we broke. You are NOT ALLOWED to go and buy one at your own expense.
I am so 100% on your side.
Keep us posted and fingers crossed.
These are the things that make us mad in both senses of the word.
Good luck.

WombatStewForTea · 18/06/2025 22:13

I'm ridiculously invested in whether they take the bin tomorrow 🥴

Those skinny bins are tiny and you've got no chance as a family

An imposter! 😳 What is to become of it? 🍿

Twinklewonderkins · 18/06/2025 22:14

You can buy replacement lids online!
they are about 20 quid.

YesHonestly · 18/06/2025 22:15

Place marking because I live for this shit.

Painrelief · 18/06/2025 22:16

Ask on your local fb group or somewhere local if anyone has a spare bin ?

Clafoutie · 18/06/2025 22:16

I feel there’s a market here for someone to create a bin ‘skin’ ( like you can get for phones) to disguise shiny bin as a council bin

We did pursue this option. But on the old bins they are all slightly different lids. And we couldn’t work it out. And the branded part of the bin was the lid. So now an unbranded pseudo IMPOSTER as pp so rightfully pointed out 🙈

God help us all. These things should be simple.

The bin computer says no ...

Rooting for you and your bin OP!

gavisconismyfriend · 18/06/2025 22:17

Could you fit the lid from the new bin to the old bin?

Pancakeflipper · 18/06/2025 22:18

Good luck bin and family.

I hope the rubbish truck shines kindly on you tomorrow.

murasaki · 18/06/2025 22:18

We had exactly the opposite, the bin men broke the lid and we got a larger bin delivered! If it wanders down the street, I grab it back.

Bluescissorsbluepen · 18/06/2025 22:19

Don’t know whether is should say this but after years this bullshit we moved to a different council and ordered new bins because the previous occupants melted them. They delivered the new bins and took away the old ones the same week. Then 6 months later our garden bin got eaten by the lorry and they replaced it the same week AND posted a replacement permit with a note saying sorry they forgot. This is probably the most outing thing I post because I tell everyone this is where to live if you just want to put out the bins without drama.

have my fingers crossed for shiny bin.

This. I doubt the binmen (bin people?) scrutinise each bin they empty.

Although with two kids in nappies would you not qualify for two of the smaller bins?

They exist- one of our neighbours has theirs camouflaged in bush-printed wrap to be less conspicuous.

Notaripoff · 18/06/2025 22:20

C'mon new shiny bin 🤞🤞🤞
