So the bin men broke our bin. Just gobbled the lid. Hardly that deep.

Rung the council to request a new lid. Nope, don’t do them. Ok.
New bin.. yes but we can only give you a 140L skinny bin (previously a normal size 240L).
We said sorry that won’t work for us. Don’t worry we will buy a bin.
We are not allowed to buy a bin.

Much confusion. Multiple calls. All jobsworths. Stalk the street. Many an unbranded bin so I think we will be fine. Buy a bin. But ours is shiny.

I have thought about rubbing mud on it but then that’s not nice for the bin men so shiny it is.

Will they take it? Big mystery.

And if not then I have no idea what we are supposed to do. But I will worry about tomorrow.

What’s a bin pedestal?

Someone had built a paved plinth for the bins.

Lettuceleafy · 18/06/2025 23:09

The bin men broke the lid on our bin. The council charged us £25 for a new bin and promised to take the old one away, which they never did. A neighbour now has our old bin, which he uses on his allotment.

IfYouPutASausageInItItsNotAViennetta · 18/06/2025 22:57

Can the bin men find it to empty it?!

THIS is why we need the laugh emoji back.

Duckchops · 18/06/2025 23:09

The secret to maximising your bin space is compaction. If you have any spare weights or big rocks, keep them on top of the bags in your wheely bin and remove them before you put it out. Works surprisingly well

Midnightlove · 18/06/2025 23:10

I couldn't deal with a skinny bin! No way, can barely deal with a normal bin.. our bin men are amazing though, take extra bags and everything. So I always give them money at Xmas as a thank you 🤣

Do not allow your DP to jump into the bin to squash the bags down, as he will fall out onto the pavement and break his wrist.

Silly man. I didn't realise he'd done it until he screamed. I just asked him to squash them a bit.

Zippidydoodah · 18/06/2025 23:14

Good luck! I’m rooting for you, Shiny Bin.

The very concept of bins that the council empty (except the tiny food waste bin) seems bizarre to me. We don't have bins at all, in our entire County. How many black bags does a standard bin hold?

Where the fuck do you live?!

IwasDueANameChange · 18/06/2025 23:15

I have two kids and i kind of never get how people fill up the bigger bins!! We have fortnightly collections (eg 1 week general waste & green bins and the other week plastic/glass/cardboard. Food waste bin as well.

If anything the thing i struggle with is the food waste bin. We have made a massive effort to cut waste but it fills up with chicken carcasses/bones, apple cores, veg peeling & masses of coffee grounds.

We attempted to home compost with shredded cardboard as well but it just never actually turned to compost!

HonestOpalHelper · 18/06/2025 23:16

Anonbindrama · 18/06/2025 22:03

I assume so. There are multiple unbranded bins up and down the street; and we have chosen a bin specifically which was ‘council standard’.

The only reason I am worrying about is if they refuse to take it out of principal of it not being their bin. Which I have been told will happen. Which makes no sense as the other bins seem to be emptied.

Edited

I've got an Eastleigh Borough Council bin, but I don't live anywhere near Eastleigh, it was here when we moved in, its a different colour to all the rest, but they empty it every 2 weeks and have done for 8 years.

New forest? saw on the news the other day they are just starting to roll out wheelie bins (pardon the pun)

Can we get some bumper stickers made?

I am morbidly fascinated by the UK bin routine.

Where I live we have communal bins and recycling containers in the street . They are emptied every day. I do not think I could not handle the pressure of capacity and time limits.
Do your overflowing bins not stink in this heat?? What happens if you forget bin day? Do people ever steal each other's bins? Or worse still, can strangers fill them up?
So many opportunities for tragedy in the UK bin system.

Needless to say I'm now heavily invested in the OPs drama.
Rooting for you from across the sea.

There is a reason British people talk about the fucking bins as much as they do the weather. It’s a constant source of stress and worry.

Funny how everyone else manages with a skinny bin! Do you not recycle or something?

No, “everyone else” does not manage with a skinny bin. You might, I wouldn’t.

What do we want? Inclusivity for bins
When do we want it? tomorrow morning.

😂

DH managed to convince the council to let us have a big bin (despite only having one baby) and he treats it like a member of the family. It’s got personalised address stickers all over it and gets brought in as soon as possible to avoid it going wandering.

The council person on the phone gave him a strict warning that the bin men will report back if our recycling bins aren’t full enough, and then they’ll take our big bin away in case we’re sneaking recycling into it.

Luckily our recycling bins are always rammed because dh loves recycling, but I just can’t imagine the bin men caring much?!

Neighbours bins were ignored because they contained too much stuff that should have been in the recycling bins. Both bins were left with the stickers of shame on their lids advertising their owners slovenliness to the world.

In other bin news, we live in Birmingham and they've been on strike since March. I can only dream of bin related incidents. I hope everything goes well tomorrow. Please try and post a picture of shiny bin after they've been.

Idioticwoman · 18/06/2025 23:27

Gosh
when our council brought in skinny bins they forcibly rounded up the fat bins and took them away, if any had escaped the first fat bin cull (on holiday, forgot to put it out), they were never collected again.
Now they only take our skinny bins once every three weeks.

murasaki · 18/06/2025 23:29

No one should fat shame my bin. Luckily the council, despite being otherwise all kinds of crap and bankrupt to boot, are inclusive of fat bins.

Confusedmeanderings · 18/06/2025 23:29

I'm overly invested now and can't wait to hear if the shiny bin was emptied.

You have no idea.
Yes, bin thieves walk amongst us. That's why when people get a new bin they have to rummage about for an old tin of paint with enough in the bottom to paint their house number onto said bin. I know who stole our lovely clean and cared for paper pod but could never prove it because DP forgot to paint the number on it.

I'm surprised people didn't just immediately throw away their new skinny bins in their existing fat bins!

I used nail varnish once as it was all I had. Lasted ages though.

NewBinBag · 18/06/2025 23:35

You can have one of my bins OP.
Im in Birmingham & haven't had a recycling collection in 3 months.

All the talk of regular collections of both refuse AND recycling is making me quite nostalgic. How I long to be stuck on a single lane street behind a bin wagon while hi viz heroes take away the cardboard & yoghurt pots.

All the best for tomorrow. We're all behind you & your shiny bin.

Toetouchingtitties · 18/06/2025 23:35

Check your bin privileges.

My elderly mother (Ceredigion resident) doesn’t have council bins. She still has to lug the council provided rubbish bags to the side of the road. As for garden waste…. don’t get her started (seriously don’t, as she really doesn’t shut up about that). She has to buy the garden waste bags from the local library - £2.20 each bag.
