to be shocked by parents drinking wine then driving with kids in car?!

Was at a kids party recently. Live in Scotland in the sticks. We all have to drive everywhere. About 12 kids and parents there (birthday girls house). Out came some wine and most of the parents (all mums bar one bloke) had at least one glass but some had two. Only the bloke and I declined. They all had to drive home, including down a bit of national speed limit road ….some of them had multiple
small kids in the car. All ostensibly responsible normal parents with decent jobs etc. Am I naive ?! Surely this isn’t normal?! But most of them did it.

And yea it’s illegal here to even have one drink and drive.

Probably because you live in the sticks they thought they can get away with it is pretty shocking but it's ingrained in them to have "just the one" they won't stop until they are stopped by the police at best !

I know now don’t I … And it’s still so low that having a large glass of wine or two right before driving is still illegal and unsafe. Sometimes you find things out during the course of a conversation don’t you, that you didn’t know before. I’m allowed to discuss anything I like, it’s a chat forum. Thank you so much for your concern. ☺️

So it’s started glasses of wine

Then fairly big glasses of wine

Now large glasses of wine?

You thought that it was zero tolerance in Scotland and didn’t intervene with any parents drinking large glasses of wine and driving?

I do a long drive each day, with a choice of routes between A) busy A roads, lanes and town driving or B) one of the busiest stretches of motorway in the country.

When I began this journey four years ago I decided that I was a) never going to drink and drive, which I have kept absolutely and b) not going to drink on any night when I was driving the next morning, which I have kept on all but two occasions when I had a glass of wine with food. So basically I only ever drink alcohol on a Friday or Saturday evening!

It is very tedious but absolutely justified, as there have been six road accident fatalities along my two routes in that time period.

Is there much of a difference between fairly big and large? Why are you focusing on my semantics so much and trying to trip me up.

here are some other words/phrases I would use:

substantial
pretty big
sizeable
not small
fairly large

Shall I do a scale drawing to confirm the size ? No I didn’t say anything, nor did the other man.

If I remember rightly they didn't set it at zero because there could be very low levels of alcohol in your system for reasons other than drinking. So they set a very low limit so that people didn't fall foul of the drink driving law for erroneous reasons.

This is true, it's why the limit to fly a commerical aircraft isn't a hard 0 (but is near enough as damn it) to take into account medicine etc.

Leftrightmiddle · 04/06/2025 09:59

Could it have been zero alcohol wine?

Shocked at how many people have voted YABU.
I would never drink and drive, its just not worth the risk and I wouldn't feel that desperate for a drink.

I've got two children and I have never been to a kids party where there's been alcohol.

I dont mean this specific topic but somone creates a poll with 2 options and someone is surprised not everyone picks the same option that shocks me more

What is the point of having a poll in the first place?

I know you are not the op it is just 'i can't believe people pick the option I dont agree with' thing
