Bought expensive chocolates and they're disgusting

Visited a chocolate shop in North Yorkshire yesterday and after paying £30 in the cafe for not much (2 tiny tubs of ice cream, a GF brownie, a regular brownie, two teas and two juices) I treated myself to some fancy pick n mix chocolates.

They taste stale. The fudge one tastes like soap. The peach one was so disgusting I spat it out, and I adore peach flavored stuff. I've had a rubbish week and they were meant to be a little treat to myself ☹️ it was £8 for four little chocolates. Wibu to contact them and let them know?

I'm off to raid the kids' stash from lidl which will be nicer!

I mean, YANBU but it would be best to tell the store rather than mumsnet if you want a refund or some kind of action to be taken?

PinkGardenParty · 01/06/2025 20:25

And please don't come at me saying £8 isn't expensive - for a few chocolates it is for me at the moment!

It's a small family run business that's at least 90mins away. I'd have to ring or email them and I'm not sure it's worth it with it being my word against theirs basically.

Do you think there’s something wrong with them or do you just not like them?

MorrisZapp · 01/06/2025 20:27

Well now you know! Chocolate is like strawberry jam. Cheaper the better 😊

BakelikeBertha · 01/06/2025 20:28

I think you should tell them OP, it may be that something's gone wrong in the making, and they're not aware of it.

They deffo taste bad - I gave the fudge half to my husband without saying anything and he spat it out. He's also tried a truffle and said it tastes "old".

I would def email them and let them know. You are right £8.00 is a lot (well it’s not to the millionaire mumsnet people 🤣)
On another point ignore the comments about why are you asking Mumsnet. Grinds my gears comments like that. Sure we may as well shut the thing down if no one is allowed to flipping ask anything.

Tenducks · 01/06/2025 20:30

That’s pretty poor presentation if they just chucked them in a box loose like that at £2 a chocolate. Was it in York or Harrogate in some tourist place?

Lmnop22 · 01/06/2025 20:33

It’s disappointing but I would probably just leave it and not shop there again.

Honestly they’re unlikely to care or do anything about it when they have people paying £8 for 4 chocolates!

Chewooky · 01/06/2025 20:33

I can see why youre disappointed, it is a lot for some chocolates and then to not enjoy them sucks! The texture does look weird on the photo, but might be normal for expensive ones not sure.

I wanted a moan more than anything I think! Hubby was minimally sympathetic and has offered me a snickers from the fridge!

It's unlikely I'll be back there any time soon. It must have been ten years since I was there last anyway!

And a moan you are allowed after spending eight quid on something you didn’t enjoy!

MoominMai · 01/06/2025 20:41

@PinkGardenParty unfortunately that’s the risk you take I guess when you buy out of town 😕. I’ve bought similar and then when I’ve thought back there’s sometimes a pattern that if the sweets/chcocs were from a business where it was a sort of ‘add on’ they were usually stale and off. Probably because no one really goes there for that primarily and stock just gets old. So now I only get high end treat from place where that’s their specialty. So personally I’d just leave it as it’s a small business and under a tenner and just take it as a lesson for the future maybe! Your moan has been suitably acknowledged though if that makes you feel any better even if your DH didn’t 😅

Wow, you care so much about this that you posted the identical post on Reddit!

I think I would drop them an email/ Facebook message and just advise them in case there's an issue with the batch.

You could write to them. I contacted a local independent takeaway once telling them they had started making an established item too peppery. The next time I ordered, it was back to normal. Might have just been a coincidence or maybe not 🤷‍♀️

I think (polite) feedback to a family run business is vital for sustained success.

They were all different chocs - a white peach one, a mocha one (haven't tried), a chocolate coated fudge (milk) and an orange one (dark)

Are these Salt and Sugar Art Chocolate? Though I think they've changed their name to Terroir. They're based in Yorkshire and look very similar...

£8 is definitely a lot for 4 stale chocolates

go and buy some Tony’s caramel sea salt to make up for it or another one of their flavours
