Comfortable Trainers

AIBU to never be able to find a pair of comfortable trainers.
We are talking walking about towns/ cities, generally weekend trainers/ days/ evenings etc.

I've tried many brands. Maybe I'm too old..

Okay that's interesting.
Little toe and big toe rubbing. Yes might be cos hot. Or wrong socks.
I've bought anti bacteria or sports socks before. Bit better. Of course unless it's winter months my socks are always gonna smell and my feet need to air after being out all day.
I used to be able to walk around all afternoon in converse trainers. But they hurt too much now..too flat to the ground.
I've got on best with walking type trainers. Only problem is they aren't good for when it's getting towards Summer. But they are more comfortable.
I don't wanna wear flip flops or sandles on a day trip/ shipping or city break. Unless it's very minimal walking .

what trainers are you wearing that make your feet smell? that sounds non-breathable so probably man made uppers which will be sweaty. In hot weather canvas or mesh tops are better for keeping feet cool. Most new balance running shoes I've tried have really good airflow through mesh.

If they're rubbing on big and little toe then the shape isn't right for your feet, look at something with a wider toe box.

If converse were you go-to but feel too flat you can get insoles that give a bit of cushioning, or things called heel cups which lift and cushion your heels a bit, could be worth trying.

My socks smell rather than feet. That's normal.

I need to be careful as:
. Flat feet
, Wide toes, narrow heel
. Countless sprained and twisted ankles. Must have sprained them 50 odd times and twisted them about 4 times each foot. Surprised that ligaments haven’t snapped or need surgery on them.
. Had chrondomalicia patella in one knee aged 18-19. It’s a type of arthritis
. History of PF

I have a similar foot type. Can I Ask what brands have worked for you.

Imperfectpolly · 15/05/2025 16:28

I wear through the toe as well so my go to for walking are asics or Adidas court bold as the front is very wide.

New balance I found really uncomfortable. I persevered with them and it got a bit better. I would wear them grocery shopping but not for longer than that.

VickiFromAmsterdam · 15/05/2025 16:42

I’ve got small, wide feet, & an in growing toe nail so I used to go from boots to flip flops. I’m now on Skechers. Although they’re not very wide, but they’re not bad either & I’ve tried all sorts. For blisters use Vaseline.

Pavers
Skechers

I can’t be doing with heavy trainers. Some brands I have picked up on display in shops and too heavy for my weak ankles

Ok. My socks or feet only smell if my feet are getting too hot and sweaty. When that happens my shoes also tend to rub.

Aquarius1234 · 16/05/2025 22:21

So I ordered some Ons Cloud on and off the court trainers.
Also New Balance but they were the wrong choice after reading this thread.
I think they are a little bit small. My right foot is slightly bigger. Should have ordered 6. 5 ! 😢 Ons Cloud that is.
I tried changing the laces. But not sure it's enough. Left foot seems OK tho.

Have you tried an approach shoe? Like the scarpa gecko?

They're very supportive.

Same here. My trainer collection is all On and Nike.

S0j0urn4r · 16/05/2025 23:18

Maybe try an insole or orthotic?

Mokel · 17/05/2025 10:32

Or a heel grip?

Ilovemyshed · 17/05/2025 10:58

I love Skechers too, the ones I have just fit me and I have several pairs of the Flex Appeal lace ups in various colours. I also have a pair of Ecco trainers which are amazing.

Bonbon21 · 18/05/2025 10:46

I have just bought 2 pairs of Vionics.. and I am literally dancing.. high arch, wide foot..
Don't give a stuff what they or I look like!
Joy!

Natsku · 18/05/2025 10:55

The Lidl trainers (the ones in Lidl colours) are the comfiest trainers I've had.

Barnbrack · 18/05/2025 16:48

Go to podiatrist, if I didn't have a good friend who is a podiatrist and advised me I swear I'd never have known to go to one and that I need orthotics. I was on crutches for 3 months with a completely effed ankle, fluid in joint from chipped cartilage, torn ligaments, plantar fascitis and Achilles tendonitis.

Wow okay. What's a standard appointment. Not sure what I'd be asking for. A foot check up? What does it entail?
Expensive?

Was that all caused by wearing the wrong trainers then?

Ph God no, sorry, it was caused by my hypermobility but I'd just been cracking on and assuming everyone was always in pain when walking ubtil I literally couldn't weight bear. But honestly I can now run round after my preschool aged kid, I can walk for miles etc and at 1 stage I thought I'd need a walking aid forever

So go to the desk, say you have foot pain and want an assessment
