Comfortable Trainers

Aquarius1234 · 12/05/2025 23:07

AIBU to never be able to find a pair of comfortable trainers.
We are talking walking about towns/ cities, generally weekend trainers/ days/ evenings etc.

I've tried many brands. Maybe I'm too old..

Have two pairs of Skechers Slip-ins and haven’t worn anything else for a year. I have the ones that look like traditional lace-ups, can’t remember the name. The best £100 I’ve ever spent! Can walk for miles, socks or no socks.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/05/2025 09:33

Also double skin socks - life changing.

beguilingeyes · 13/05/2025 09:48

Fitflops. Almost all my shoes are Fitflops now. Did 32,000 steps yesterday.

Mokel · 13/05/2025 09:49

I like Skechers as they are very comfy. Plus can get 'girly' colours too as some brands have their 8s as Euro 41.5. I am more 42-42.5

A lot of trainers weigh a ton and can't be doing with heavy shoes now.

BruisedNeckMeat · 13/05/2025 09:57

I have delicate feet that blister easily so have to be very careful with new trainers.

However, I can pop a new pair of Hokas out the box and walk for miles with no problem. They are fantastic!

wizzler · 13/05/2025 12:32

I had surgery in 2024 and my physio recommended Hoka trainers as they have so much cushioning. Not particularly elegant and quite pricey, but it’s like walking on clouds !

fiftiesmum · 13/05/2025 12:39

Walsh are brilliant

ToffeeSheep · 13/05/2025 12:41

Try FitFlop trainers - I have several pairs and they are comfy from day 1! :)

BasketballHoopla · 13/05/2025 12:42

New Balance 327 - so comfortable

hattie43 · 13/05/2025 12:43

I have Vionics , did 20,000 steps a day around Amsterdam recently and they were really comfortable.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 13/05/2025 12:45

Brooks - or any other good road running trainers!
Go to a sports shop and get them fitted properly.

No to sketchers, they don't last. I have them for work, but I am on my 3rd pair while the brooks are still going strong!

Asics are my favourite trainers. I have quite awkward feet, with wide toes and narrow heels, so finding anything to fit can be tricky. I have Gel Pulse 15 for the gym which have a fairly wide toe box and are like walking on air. I also have a pair of their (cheaper) Patriot13, also comfortable but simpler in design.

These trainers are not fashionable at all (except maybe for running/exercise) but they are very light and easy to wear.

100% this, I bought a pair of asics gel for a charity walk last year, absolutely the most comfortable trainers i have ever worn!

ASICS! Best thing for wide toes!! So comfy. I think also you can return in the first 60 days if you discover they are not comfortable. I have the kayano ones which are pricey but ended up wearing them every day for the last 3 years!

I've been on the hunt for new trainers recently and I tried on my DPs kayanos the other day. Too big obvs but my god they were comfortable. Just need to decide what colour to order now. I don't like the ones with massive white soles.

Asics Noosa are supposed to be really good as well but the colours are too whacky for me.

UsernameShmusername2024 · 13/05/2025 12:54

Everyone recommending hoka - do you find they fit wide feet? I have wide feet and tried a friend's pair on recently because I'd heard they were good but they felt too narrow at the toes. Not sure what model hers were - any recs for wide fitting hokas? TIA

Fitflops. Almost all my shoes are Fitflops now. Did 32,000 steps yesterday.

OP should steer clear of fitflops if she has a high front toe. I do and they are ALL uncomfortable. I repeatedly try to buy them but every time the front of the shoe comes down at too much of an angle and presses on my front toe nail. If you go up a size they are an inch too long in the front. Just all wrong!

ranoutofquinoaandprosecco · 13/05/2025 12:59

I’ve had Sorrel this year which have been great for walking, I live in the Yorkshire Dales and they’re may go to on a daily basis. We’ve just come back from 2 weeks in Japan and I alternated those with a pair of Saucony which were immense, really comfortable and bouncy!

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 13/05/2025 13:20

I wear M&S own brand suede/fabric chunky trainers, I have a pair I bought last year for a city break, walked 50 miles in the heat over four days and my feet felt great. They're my every day go to still, and will buy again.
I was gifted a pair of Sketchers slip ins which are brilliant for the garden/quick dog walks but I'm not a fan of how they look. I'm not into brands particularly, but Skechers are definitely more substance over style.

Tomatocutwithazigzagedge · 13/05/2025 13:30

I have NB trainers and I don't find them particularly comfortable, the backs really rub my heel.

I've never failed with Stan Smiths. They are so soft and foamy, and the backs are straight and pliable. Never had a bad pair, I've got 6 in different states of wear.

Daughn · 13/05/2025 13:32

I have a long and high big toe, I am wide and bony front of foot and narrow at the heel. I am a nightmare to find trainers that fit and don't wear a hole in the front. Can't get on with Skechers. Agree with some PPs that the M&S runner style trainers have been excellent from day one. I have posted in another thread about the FatFace trainers. Absolutely, amazing comfort and relatively wider and higher toe box. I was so surprised how comfortable they are as I would never usually buy a flat trainer but I have done 15k+ steps a day in them on a citybreak no problem.

Aquarius1234 · 13/05/2025 13:32

Had some flat suede ankle boots size 6.. Dune I think and they were too loose.
Slipping etc That's so uncomfortable could hardly walk.
So I'm deffo not more than 6 that's on the smaller size.
I'm a slightly slow walker so even worse with rubbish trainers / boots.

I wear out the material at the front where my big toe goes. After a few months of wearing converse type trainers. But a size 6 fits.. or maybe they don't if a hole forms after a while.. ouch.

Oh and my socks rarely get holes in. So my toe nails are fine.

Sounds like you need to buy a bigger size as your big toes shouldn’t be rubbing at the front. Try a 6.5 half instead or even going up a full size to a 7.

For running it’s always advised to buy a half/full size bigger for exactly this reason i.e. to avoid your big toe coming into contact with the front of the trainer repeatedly.

I bought gaviota wide, and they were fine

And thanks to @pandora206 , I am now browsing the Asics website

Purely for long walks, I have these - Nike Pegasus Trail 5: https://www.nike.com/gb/t/pegasus-trail-5-trail-running-shoes-vB2WEZGT

They’re trail running shoes, so they’re fairly chunky, and I therefore wouldn’t wear them with a dress in the evening etc, but to walk in they’re brilliant. I’ve done numerous city breaks and days out in them, walking 10, 20, 30 miles.

I even persuaded DP to buy some and he wears them all the time now too. We’re both runners but use these strictly for walking (although he quite happily wears his popping to town etc).

I would always order at least half a size up with these sorts of shoe, and wear sports (running) socks, never fashion socks.

Thank you for posting these @decemberdecember. Just ordered a pair. I like Hoka speedgoats for running, but don't love the look of them for just wearing around/general walking.

Okay but wouldn't that mean your ankles slip out the trainers when walking up and down.
As I say ankle boots are often too big in a 6 once I start walking.
