I decided to share a bottle of wine with my lovely husband this evening, he poured, I went to go and get another glass. I don’t know what to say! We both knew we go through wine fast in the house but we can make a bottle of wine last 2 days if we take it home from a restaurant.

Why did it never occur to me to check how much wine our wine glasses hold? He’s used 2 375ml bottles of wine for 2 glasses. BECAUSE THATS HOW MUCH OUR WINE GLASSES HOLD!! Im horrified!! I’m already dying of stage 4 cancer so it won’t do much harm to me but to him!!

This one glass of wine is an entire 375ml of wine and it’s been a really really bad day so I’ve already finished the glass. Fuck me!

WIBU to not check how much wine our wine glasses hold? He always pours the wine (he’s the aficionado) and he always pours it to that level. we’ve probably annihilated bottles of wine in 2 glasses!

Fuck me im thick please make me feel better.

A standard uk bottle of wine is 750ml fyi

TeenToTwenties · 06/05/2025 19:52

40 years ago a bottle of wine was 6 glasses.

Doggymummar · 06/05/2025 19:53

Yep when I was a waitress in the 89s and 90s we had to get six glasses from a bottle

MynameisJune · 06/05/2025 19:54

A can of fizzy drink is 330ml I don’t think 375ml is that big.

sellotapechicken · 06/05/2025 19:55

Don’t judge my kitchen, I found out I need surgery to remove basically all my organs that aren’t essential ‘so pancreas (have a pancreatic cancer gene), part
of my liver, my omentum (covers organs), a kidney, my gallbladder, a lot of my bowel, potentially my bladder, part of my vagina and bum hole, then having hope chemotherapy left in there for an hour or so.. so a glass of wine was called for (not a 1/2 bottle)!! Also it’s all being done at my workplace by my colleagues. I love my life !! 🤦‍♀️ 😭

Best thing you can do is get some old fashioned small wine glasses (try charity shops), that’s what my parents did and they actually get 6 glasses
from a bottle now

Fancyfencepost · 06/05/2025 19:55

YANBU, cheers to you!

No I know that, I got 2 small 1/2 bottles of wine on the way home from the hospital and didn’t expect them both to be used for 2 glasses of wine 🤣

I'm so sorry to hear about your diagnosis. You deserve that much wine. Your husband sounds lovely 💐

StillProcrastinating · 06/05/2025 19:59

Next time just grab a couple of straws … saves the washing up ! (Paper , obvs).

sorry you’re facing that. Glad you’ve got vino in hand. All strength to you x

Yes because the glasses were tiny.

sellotapechicken · 06/05/2025 20:00

Oh and I am a surgeon who does this operation weekly so I really do know everyone who will be doing the surgery.
I decided today to agree to it as they think they can cure me but I swear to god I never expected my actual colleagues would be up close and personal in all my business. At least I’ll be out cold

A small glass is 125ml (standard for fizz and is 6 glasses to the bottle)
A medium glass is 175ml (standard size in most restaurants these days)
A large glass is 250ml (you get 3 to a bottle)

Most people I know drink half a bottle each with their dinner (more if they are out as they might have a cocktail, wine and a liqueur with their coffee).

If you don't want new wine glasses buy yourself a set of wine measures on amazon! Don't beat yourself up - you have a lot more to worry about! (If you enjoyed it then it did you some good!)

PonyPatter44 · 06/05/2025 20:02

375ml is a big old glass of wine, but it sounds like you need it! "Small" glasses of wine are 125ml, which is how you get six glasses out of a bottle. I get four, or three on a bad day.

Incidentally, do you know why a standard bottle of wine holds 750ml? Originally wine was of course shipped in barrels. But in the 19th century, wine shippers started wanting to ship in standardised bottles to meet overseas demand. One gallon barrel of wine neatly fills six bottles, which is the usual case size you can get in France.

There you go, now you know another useless fascinating fact about wine!

NicolaCasanova · 06/05/2025 20:03

Sorry to hear your diagnosis.

I find wine tastes better if it is in a half-filled glass. Drink and eat whatever you want and have a lovely evening with your husband.

Good luck for your surgery.

That’s a great wine fact!! Thank you 🤩. I will keep that stored for a quiz night!

Judge your kitchen? Would you like to see mine? And I say, if you have stage 4 cancer, drink all you want!

scorpiogirly · 06/05/2025 20:06

It still pisses me off that I was nagging my mother to cut down on smoking when she had stage 4 lung cancer!

FloppySarnie · 06/05/2025 20:07

Sorry about about the diagnosis OP. It sounds like you’ll be in good hands though. I love that a surgeon refers to. ‘bum hole’ rather than something more anatomical!

You deserve a big drink!

Redrosesposies · 06/05/2025 20:07

Ah who cares @sellotapechicken on a day you get news like that? You both deserve it.
Hope it all works💐

Jabberwok · 06/05/2025 20:08

Hearing the news you had I expect your husband doesn't care how big the glasses are. Just enjoy the wine. I do hope that your colleagues are right. The doctors I know have always been dreadful patients.

Best wishes for the ops

I'm glad you've said this! I always say to my husband to pour only half a glass. I much prefer to drink half a glass rather than a full one. So much nicer!

This! If anyone's got a good reason for drinking half a bottle, it's you OP.

You also have excellent taste in wine. Most roses are too sweet for me, but a decent Cote de Provence is really crisp, fresh and quite dry.

You crack on and enjoy it.

I nagged my dad to not drink whiskey so often when he was stage 4. Then one day I remember thinking it's his last pleasure in life, let him enjoy the whiskey.

MaryBeardsShoes · 06/05/2025 20:12

Jesus Christ OP I think I’d remain permanently pissed in your position. I’m so sorry about your situation ❤️
