I decided to share a bottle of wine with my lovely husband this evening, he poured, I went to go and get another glass. I don’t know what to say! We both knew we go through wine fast in the house but we can make a bottle of wine last 2 days if we take it home from a restaurant.

Why did it never occur to me to check how much wine our wine glasses hold? He’s used 2 375ml bottles of wine for 2 glasses. BECAUSE THATS HOW MUCH OUR WINE GLASSES HOLD!! Im horrified!! I’m already dying of stage 4 cancer so it won’t do much harm to me but to him!!

This one glass of wine is an entire 375ml of wine and it’s been a really really bad day so I’ve already finished the glass. Fuck me!

WIBU to not check how much wine our wine glasses hold? He always pours the wine (he’s the aficionado) and he always pours it to that level. we’ve probably annihilated bottles of wine in 2 glasses!

Fuck me im thick please make me feel better.

I nagged my dad to not drink whiskey so often when he was stage 4. Then one day I remember thinking it's his last pleasure in life, let him enjoy the whiskey.

Yeah, she never did. Stupidly I thought I could stop the inevitable if I looked after her well enough. Anyway, the OP had hope, at least that's how I read it. The surgery sounds immense but if it works it's worth it. I hope it does xx

Oh and I am a surgeon who does this operation weekly so I really do know everyone who will be doing the surgery.
I decided today to agree to it as they think they can cure me but I swear to god I never expected my actual colleagues would be up close and personal in all my business. At least I’ll be out cold

All the best for your surgery. The benefit of knowing your colleagues will be performing your surgery is that you know you are in capable hands and they will do their best for a positive outcome.

Enjoy the wine, I think you deserve it!

Addictedtopretzels · 06/05/2025 20:16

Enjoy your wine OP! And I hope your surgery goes brilliantly.

Full disclosure, I have a stinking cold at the moment and am a bit woolly headed but reading about your op and everything they are planning to remove I genuinely thought “what are they going to fill all that internal space with”, like you were a rag doll. Sorry! I’m off to take some paracetamol and think about my life choices…

LakieLady · 06/05/2025 20:10

This! If anyone's got a good reason for drinking half a bottle, it's you OP.

You also have excellent taste in wine. Most roses are too sweet for me, but a decent Cote de Provence is really crisp, fresh and quite dry.

You crack on and enjoy it.

The whispering angel is actually really nice! I bought 1 of the 1/2 bottles of it at the Christie M&S (god knows why they sell wine but I’m very glad they do)! Then it scanned through at £4.50 so I bought 4 🤣 which is £2 more than 1 full bottle.

Im not even that bothered about the surgery because I know exactly; 1. Which one of my colleagues is lead surgeon and she’s bloody brilliant (no bedside manner, awful to colleagues, but has the best outcomes), 2. I know exactly how it will go and what they’ll do, I’m more concerned that my colleagues are going to see me in my full naked glory 🤣

thanks for being nice!

I think you are both entitled to a large pour right now.

my cancer was completely curable and I got absolutely smashed the day I found out. I don’t normally drink much, so it was a pretty big deal that I just started drinking vodka.

btw. No one is allowed to post sympathy for me. It was 30 Years ago. It was a tiny blip in my life. I’m fine. Op needs our support.

FOJN · 06/05/2025 20:24

I hope the surgery is successful and you recover as quickly as possible.

You've had the equivalent of 3 small glasses of wine in one glass, or 4.5 units or thereabouts, I can't make out the ABV on the bottle. I think that's pretty restrained after the day you have had.

zenai · 06/05/2025 20:25

OP good luck in your cancer journey. I'd buy a full bottle next time and to hell with it, whether you're a doc or not.

Anyway, why haven't you got thimbles for this wine since that is the size of receptacle that causes conniptions on MN if someone has more than that in one sitting. Answer honestly now.

Oh, you don't sew, OK I get it.

QuarterHorse · 06/05/2025 20:25

Just wanted to say I admire your attitude to such a diagnosis. 1 think you deserve gallons of the stuff

Lovethesparklylights · 06/05/2025 20:29

Good luck with your surgery. I fully understand how you feel about your colleagues seeing you naked.

I'm so sorry to hear of your diagnosis. If they do the surgery, might the cancer not be terminal? Wishing you all the very best.

paddlinglikecrazy · 06/05/2025 20:29

Drink the wine op, you deserve it.
Hoping the surgery is a success for you. Sending love ❤️

aster10 · 06/05/2025 20:29

When we order a large glass of wine in a bar/pub/restaurant, is it not 250ml? I thought a small glass is 125 ml and a large one is 250ml. Or is a large one really 375 ml?

I can only drink gin and tonic these days, for anything else I need just a drop to feel tipsy. I wonder why. I’m not really enjoying alcohol any more!

Mischance · 06/05/2025 20:30

Enjoy your wine!
I am sure your colleagues will cope with your nakedness. Hope it all goes well for you.

40 years ago a bottle of wine was 6 glasses.

They are still in my little wine glasses.

aster10 · 06/05/2025 20:33

OP, would surgeons really see the patient as a naked person or would they rather see the operating field, a certain area of skin to cut, organs to work on? Isn’t there some dissociation so to say?

Rosscameasdoody · 06/05/2025 20:34

Enjoy your glass of wine. I’m raising a glass to you right now in the hope that your surgery will be successful.

So sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

but at least you have a plan and are in safe hands. Is it a whippel procedure, by any chance? ( I’m not medical, but know someone who had this, and sounds similar).

best of luck to you, enjoy your wine, and you have my greatest respect for being a surgeon. What an intelligent, capable woman you must be.

GoldPoster · 06/05/2025 20:35

DH and I weigh our wine (when we’re alone that is). 125 ml each so 6 glasses in the bottle. We can use whichever glasses we want without the danger of drinking too much

wine in any amount is called for and how great you will be in loving hands. Wishing you a cute.

prelovedusername · 06/05/2025 20:38

‘S fine OP. Pre op anaesthetic.

Don't be embarrassed about colleagues seeing all your bits. I have it on good authority that when your eyes are closed you’re invisible.

edited for typo and I haven’t touched a drop

Pixie2015 · 06/05/2025 20:39

hope the wine tasted good and you both enjoyed it. hope the operation goes well and your colleagues get a curative result xxxxx

40 years ago a bottle of wine was 6 glasses.

It still is / should be!! Shared two bottles of wine at a restaurant last Sunday amongst 5 friends.

That came out at two generous glasses per person. People tend to really overfill modern wine glasss. (Which is understandable. I myself quite like wine as well…)

I am however incredibly sorry about your situation, OP! I wish you and your DH all the best, strength and delicious wine ❤️

TemporaryName123 · 06/05/2025 20:41

Wow. You sound amazing! I think we’d all like to have a drink with you (whatever size the glass!) because how you are even staying upright right now, and with such a sense of humour, is absolutely inspirational. I know it’s a bit ‘can’t go over it, can’t go under it, must go through it’, but still, you sound like you are going to go through this head first. Bravo you, please keep us posted. Do you have an op date?

Tapsthemic · 06/05/2025 20:42

Enjoy OP! I’ve heard excellent things about Whispering Angel, so at least it’s decent stuff 🫶

Still is if you measure a small pub measure…which I do.
