I decided to share a bottle of wine with my lovely husband this evening, he poured, I went to go and get another glass. I don’t know what to say! We both knew we go through wine fast in the house but we can make a bottle of wine last 2 days if we take it home from a restaurant.

Why did it never occur to me to check how much wine our wine glasses hold? He’s used 2 375ml bottles of wine for 2 glasses. BECAUSE THATS HOW MUCH OUR WINE GLASSES HOLD!! Im horrified!! I’m already dying of stage 4 cancer so it won’t do much harm to me but to him!!

This one glass of wine is an entire 375ml of wine and it’s been a really really bad day so I’ve already finished the glass. Fuck me!

WIBU to not check how much wine our wine glasses hold? He always pours the wine (he’s the aficionado) and he always pours it to that level. we’ve probably annihilated bottles of wine in 2 glasses!

You're not suppose to fill a glass of wine to the top, you need swirling space. A glass of wine is 125 mL because that was roughly 1 unit of alcohol back in the days when we drank 9 % wine. Both the glasses in the photo have 125 mL of wine. The one on the left holds ~700mL and the one on the right ~400 mL but with 125 mL you can get a good swirl going so you can enjoy the nose.

You don't have to fill the glasses all the way to the top.

A standard uk bottle of wine is 750ml fyi

Which is equal to 2x 375 ml glasses 🤷‍♀️

Best thing you can do is get some old fashioned small wine glasses (try charity shops), that’s what my parents did and they actually get 6 glasses
from a bottle now

You can still buy small capacity wine glasses.

We buy "Paris" wine glasses (try "Drinks Stuff", Amazon and elsewhere).

We pour them to within three quarters of an inch of the rim and get 6 glasses out of a 750ml bottle. (That's 6 x 125mls.)

We both have a glass three nights a week with our dinner and that way we only get through a bottle a week between us.

OP, I am so sorry about your situation.

Greybeardy · 06/05/2025 21:04

gentle thought, but have you added up units/week (simply because your OP sounds like they may be 'well used' glasses)?...is there any chance, particularly given that you're probably a bit run down at the mo, that you're at risk of withdrawal? Would be really naff to add that to everything else you're going through so may be worth mentioning if it is possible so they can proper plan and prevent it.

Surgeons cannot have long fake nails. Just stating the obvious.

Oh shut up. Obvious schmobvious.
Maybe she's not actually operating on anyone because y'know she's got fucking cancer and might not actually be well enough to wield a scalpel right now.

Bunnyisputbackinthebox · 06/05/2025 21:05

One thing op your friends will genuinely be able to declare they know you inside and out...
Sounds like you have a great team to get you through....

Bibbitybobbitybo · 06/05/2025 21:05

I think under the circumstances a big glass of wine and a sense of humour is absolutely ideal.

arcticpandas · 06/05/2025 21:05

Cheers to you OP! 🍻 You know that your collegues will be focussing on saving your life, not evaluating how fit you are. Just as you would in their place. 💗

sellotapechicken · 06/05/2025 19:56

No I know that, I got 2 small 1/2 bottles of wine on the way home from the hospital and didn’t expect them both to be used for 2 glasses of wine 🤣

If you had three ordinary glasses each that would be a bottle anyway so no harm done really.

Simplestars · 06/05/2025 21:07

Good luck @sellotapechicken hope it all goes well.
You will be in safe hands with best care.😌

Wine doesn't last well once opened, that's my excuse anyway.

itsgettingweird · 06/05/2025 21:08

Well on the upside once you have no internal organs there’ll be even more room for wine! Maybe you need bigger glasses - 750ml ones to hold a whole bottle?!!

seriously though I’m sorry to hear about your diagnosis. My mum had cancer and my dad has it. It’s a shit disease but having a sense of humour definitely helps manage the crap that goes with it.

forget your kitchen - get yourself one of those wine subscriptions and feel no guilt!

I didn't know you could have your pancreas removed.

Nor did I. I thought that’s why pancreatic cancer is so bad because the offending organ can’t be excised.

Enigma53 · 06/05/2025 21:10

Hey @sellotapechicken NOTHING
you will say, will EVER warrant a YABU!

Now, forget the glasses, grab a couple of straws and get guzzling! 🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾 ( oh and grab some biscuits to dunk in!! 🤣) Joking ( crumbs in wine = grim) right?

nocoolnamesleft · 06/05/2025 21:11

Makes you instantly insulin dependent diabetic, and pancreatic insufficient (so need to take lots of capsules of creon to digest food) but can be done in dire circumstances.

SqueakyDinosaur · 06/05/2025 21:12

Your kitchen also appears to contain a KitchenAid mixer with an actual SEARCHLIGHT on the front, so you're all good with me.

And large glasses of <whatever> are definitely needed for a diagnosis (ovarian here, in remission). Godspeed.

nocoolnamesleft · 06/05/2025 21:13

Not a surgeon, but definitely found it weird having a couple of (much less major) cancer surgeries in my own trust. Have to say that the team were marvellous. I think the best strategy is to find a clinician you trust, then put yourself in their hands, and sounds like you've done that.

Icanhearabee · 06/05/2025 21:18

Just wanted to say sorry about your diagnosis. You deserve a nice big glass of wine. Hope you enjoyed it OP 💐🌷

Grinchybinchy · 06/05/2025 21:19

Good luck op you bloody deserve that ginormous glass of wine and another if you fancy it! I really hope the op is a success cancer is such a headfuck. I was diagnosed 13 years ago and didn’t think I’d be here today but my belief since that day is drink the wine, tell people you love them and stop giving a fuck what other people think (I mean of all the things to pick up on your nails!) will raise my glass to you tonight xx

latetothefisting · 06/05/2025 21:20

sellotapechicken · 06/05/2025 20:16

The whispering angel is actually really nice! I bought 1 of the 1/2 bottles of it at the Christie M&S (god knows why they sell wine but I’m very glad they do)! Then it scanned through at £4.50 so I bought 4 🤣 which is £2 more than 1 full bottle.

Im not even that bothered about the surgery because I know exactly; 1. Which one of my colleagues is lead surgeon and she’s bloody brilliant (no bedside manner, awful to colleagues, but has the best outcomes), 2. I know exactly how it will go and what they’ll do, I’m more concerned that my colleagues are going to see me in my full naked glory 🤣

thanks for being nice!

I mean given that they went through at a lower price you could argue you haven't drunk 2 bottles 'worth' at all..... 😁
and grapes are good for you anyway!
good luck for your surgery

Iamnotalemming · 06/05/2025 21:24

Cheers to you, OP Wine

To cheer you up: I once had surgery performed by a surgeon who my DH worked with. I went under wearing a surgical gown and paper knickers. I woke up to my surprise in the gown and no knickers. Cue DH more interested in asking his colleague what had happened to my pants than how I was feeling after my surgery...

I wish you all the best Flowers

OP, would surgeons really see the patient as a naked person or would they rather see the operating field, a certain area of skin to cut, organs to work on? Isn’t there some dissociation so to say?

People are temporarily partially naked at the start, whilst things like the catheter being inserted into the bladder and positioning in the right place for the surgeons... but it's a v short period of time until just a small square of abdomen will be exposed. But anaesthetists are v much advocates for keeping people covered as much as possible... n we throw any students etc out of theatre when it's a member of staff involved

But yeah we see naked people all day everyday so very detached from it and def not something I'd every remember the specifics of an individual (nor would peers, have had the breast nurses I worked with every day present when I've been examined didn't really think anything more about it)

Surgeons cannot have long fake nails. Just stating the obvious.

During surgery correct, at home in their free time (whether that’s day off, sick leave etc) they can do what they want with their nails. I’m guessing by the diagnosis and the fact OP is in her kitchen with a bottle of wine she isn’t heading to perform surgery right now

Noodledoo84 · 06/05/2025 21:29

Aw mate, I'm recovering from bowel cancer. I work in critical care, know all the colorectal drs, theatre staff and alllll the critical care team. I had my op, spent a few days on a unit I've worked on and all I can think about is the amount of people that have seen me naked and now have to look me in the eye! 🙈🤣

Good luck, I hope the op goes well and wishing you a speedy recovery.

P.s. enjoy all the wine. If you're chemo is anything like mine it messes with your taste buds and nothing tastes nice. X
