Greta Thunberg - why would she be regarded badly?

StrawberryDream24 · 02/05/2025 09:49

I've just met someone who was extremely scathing of a woman dressing as Greta Thunberg for an "inspirational women" dress up type thing.

She didn't elaborate, other than that it was ridiculous for someone to have done that and she had to hold her tongue in telling them so (and the circumstances allowed for no further discussion for me to find out why she felt that way).

I don't know a great deal about GT but what is this lady on about? Has anyone any idea? Is there something I'm missing?

Was it a puppet costume?

5foot5 · 02/05/2025 10:05

Sounds fine to me

GustyBaloo · 02/05/2025 10:05

Very rich parents, huge carbon footprint.

That's your starter for 10 🤣

ZaZathecat · 02/05/2025 10:06

I think it's because people want to put their head in the sand about climate change and convince themselves that Greta is just a loony

CrazyOldMe · 02/05/2025 10:07

The people who hate “do gooders” do so to hide the fact that they aren’t doing anything to make the euros a better place.

ButWhere · 02/05/2025 10:10

Older conservative types don't like the idea of being "educated" by a young person.

Middleagedstriker · 02/05/2025 10:14

It's much easier to berate a young woman than tackle climate change.

Ablondiebutagoody · 02/05/2025 10:14

Because she's a massive hypocrite. Same reason I won't be lectured about climate change by David Attenborough or Chris Packham. One has spent the last 60 years flying around the World with a film crew. Last time I saw the other one, he was flying over the savanna in a helicopter looking at flamingos. Bell end.

KarmenPQZ · 02/05/2025 10:14

Because she’s a disrupter and has not stayed in her lane I think is most people’s issues with greta

One of my oldest friends is currently in prison for his stance on CC.
He has issues with GT.
You will have seen him on TV.
I support him 100%

Also he's been doing this for over 30 years.
Rich kids are not the answer.

GustyBaloo · 02/05/2025 10:24

GT isn't teaching us anything we didn't learn in Alevel Geography 30 years ago.

You know, when some of us started caring about CFCs the ozone layer, deforestation.
These are not new things.

Happyinarcon · 02/05/2025 10:26

Because her mum sang in Eurovision and she comes across as being a media creation

Jackrussellsaremad · 02/05/2025 10:26

She's been on pro Hamas marches and was accused to holding up an anti semitic sign (which she blamed on autism). So I think that's what the person you met may have been thinking of. Possibly not her previous environmentalist incarnation.

OxfordInkling · 02/05/2025 10:27

Because she was a puppet mouthpiece for a movement that had no real impact and no real ideas. She travels all over the world, shouting at people. People had to tolerate her because she was a minor.

it’s like listening to Al Gore, Leonardo Do Caprio or the other celebrities whose carbon footprints are extreme. Very do as I say, not as I do.

It you want to see an inspirational teen - look to Boyan Slat. As a teen he recognised a problem, worked out a solution, and have worked to implement it. That’s inspiring.

Greta could have done with spending more time in actual school and she might have developed the skills and knowledge to do the same.

She actually travels by boat, train ect... And her parents are comfortably off but not multi millionaires or anything. There is no credible evidence for these views.

I think lots of disinformation like this has been spread about Greta in order to discredit her message. There is a huge amount of political and economic interest in keeping our fossil fuel industries thriving.

Particularly a young woman. Who isn't nice and polite and apologetic about things.

Did she?

Sorry, Sonia just popped in to my head.
I know that's not true!

Frankly I think that's a foolish and unhelpful "holier than thou" attitude.

Presumably the alternative you'd favour is that all the influential and massively popular nature documentaries - which inevitably require plane flights and film crews - should be made by climate change deniers.

There's nothing remotely "hypocritical" about Attenborough et al doing their best to bring climate change reality into every household via documentaries, which obviously can't be made without the carbon footprint that entails (miniscule compared with the main offenders).

Dotjones · 02/05/2025 10:33

Because she's not actually doing much to improve things. It's very easy to complain and pick fault. Keeping your head down and working to resolve the problems you see is much harder.

She's the face of a movement. Change needs work, in the example of climate change it requires work in the form of technological advancements and/or radical political policies like culling the populations of Asia and Africa. That's why people oppose her.

StrawberryDream24 · 02/05/2025 10:34

The lady in question, from her other interests/allegiances may be a climate change denier (is denier a word, it's the measurement for hosiery thickness isn't it, lol) and may be pro Palestine .....so one or both might explain it.

Our fossil fuel industries are far from thriving.

Which working colliery did you last see? Which thriving towns around them full of employment did you last visit?

New generations need it highlighted though, don't they.

And older ones may need reminded and motivated.
