Greta Thunberg - why would she be regarded badly?

StrawberryDream24 · 02/05/2025 09:49

I've just met someone who was extremely scathing of a woman dressing as Greta Thunberg for an "inspirational women" dress up type thing.

She didn't elaborate, other than that it was ridiculous for someone to have done that and she had to hold her tongue in telling them so (and the circumstances allowed for no further discussion for me to find out why she felt that way).

I don't know a great deal about GT but what is this lady on about? Has anyone any idea? Is there something I'm missing?

Hammas 🤣

Gone.

The women I mentioned have actually achieved something though, unlike GT.

Well she's publicly spanked Andrew Tate:s arse twice - which I consider an achievement lol.

Not in the same league, I understand though.

Unfortunately, I think this has likely done more harm than good.

YankSplaining · 02/05/2025 11:50

Because no one likes to be told, “How dare you!” by a petulant rich kid in pigtails.

Hammas 🤣

Gone.

Given your comments about the British fossil fuel industries, you're hardly in a position to criticise a spelling error a poster corrected themselves.

Gone, you say?

IF ONLY.

(Again, you sound sooooo triggered.
Maybe get back out in your garden and see if it helps (where you said you were going and indicated you were leaving the thread, yet here you still are).

Unfortunately, I think this has likely done more harm than good.

I thought it helped young women to see a woman standing up to him.

I thought it helped everyone to see him not being taken seriously.
(I think part of the problem with AT is people taking him seriously).

He also lost the plot and ended up foaming at the mouth ..... Which showed him up for what he is.

Our fossil fuel industries are far from thriving.

Which working colliery did you last see? Which thriving towns around them full of employment did you last visit?

Coal has been edged out for a few reasons (not all to do with cleaner energy sources)

But oil and gas companies made a 3.2 billion profit in the UK alone. So yes I would call that thriving. Fossil fuels still account for more than 80% of the global energy supply.

She's been on pro Hamas marches and was accused to holding up an anti semitic sign (which she blamed on autism). So I think that's what the person you met may have been thinking of. Possibly not her previous environmentalist incarnation.

Was that why she was arrested? For supporting a terrorist organisation?

The flamingo one wasn't anything about bringing climate change reality into households. It was about flamingos. Them flying around and stuff, standing on one leg, that kind of thing. If it was so essential that we witness this, it could have been made by an African with a drone. Packham's need to produce carbon emissions doesn't trump anybody else's. He should shut up about it. Probably wasn't essential for his stepdaughter to tag along either.

Meh, the carbon footprint would have been the same as a small party of tourists doing the same, the difference being that the experience was enjoyed by millions of viewers.

If anything, these documentaries represent a particularly benign and laudable use of aircraft.

Because it's easy to shout "how dare you" rather than say " why don't you"

She moans and complains and paints a false narrative that "older" people have created the problems. She offers no solutions, travels thousands of miles per year (all travel impacts the climate unless wind or solar or animal driven).

She has not come up with some idea to combat climate change, you would have thought she would have brought together a large number of scientists, raised the funds and set them to work....her profile should have been enough to get the greatest climate brains together.

This already exists. It’s the IPCC. I think Greta sees her role more as bringing their key messages to new audiences.

Newbutoldfather · 02/05/2025 12:16

I feel a bit sorry for Greta.

She was a good and passionate single issue campaigner when young, And you could understand a 16 year old not understanding a lot of context and nuance.

But she is much older now and hasn’t really matured intellectually.

And she does come across as antisemitic.

Gallowayan · 02/05/2025 12:29

I dislike her and the smug hypocrasy of most environmental activists. I will not be patronised and told what to do by anyone with a larger carbon footprint than my own.

BigFatLiar · 02/05/2025 12:29

ZaZathecat · 02/05/2025 10:06

I think it's because people want to put their head in the sand about climate change and convince themselves that Greta is just a loony

Knowing climate change is happening doesn't mean you can't be convinced she's nuts.

There was no sign. She had a reversible emotions plush octopus (one side is happy / the other sad) by her side when she held up a sign saying I stand with Gaza. Some People saw this as antisemitic due to the octopus. She apologised, said she was not aware of the association, that she does not wish to promote hate and deleted the photo.

She was not arrested for that. She was arrested for blocking access to a building, there were no charges held against her.

Re: 'sees the world in black & white terms' - that is probably down to her Autism? I have a teen DD who looks very like GT. She gets some grief, mostly from middle aged men, when she doesn't smile & do 'pretty compliant girl' stuff at them. Imo GT gets a lot more grief than an identical NT girl would and a whole world more than a lad would.

Why is irrelevant. As is what she looks like.

If you split the world into good and bad (according to you) and then spend your time shrieking at the people you’ve labelled bad, you aren’t going to win hearts and minds, you won’t win consensus, you’ll sow division and ultimately you’ll fail. Which is pretty much what’s happened.

But she appears to have bailed on the environment and pivoted to other enthusiasms, which kind of undermines what she’s done,

Her parents have been so irresponsible.

Seventree · 02/05/2025 12:30

GustyBaloo · 02/05/2025 10:24

GT isn't teaching us anything we didn't learn in Alevel Geography 30 years ago.

You know, when some of us started caring about CFCs the ozone layer, deforestation.
These are not new things.

I don't have strong feelings either way about Greta but that feels like a strange argument. What percentage of people are taking geography as an A level? I certainly didn't and can only remember climate change being lightly touched upon during science lessons at school.

it definitely wasn't a core part of my education or something I'd expect everyone to have a fair grasp on without people raising awareness in the media.

Unorganisedchaos2 · 02/05/2025 12:31

Theres so much disinformation about her I honestly couldn't make an option on her but I do believe in progress not perfections. You could argue that David Attenborough and the like are educating while racking up carbon emissions - its hardly the same as the mega rich taking private jets every week.

Her interaction with Andrew Tate which I believe led to his arrest will always make me think fondly of her though 😊

I was going to comment this. She has expressed pro-terror views and used traditional antisemitic imagery/propaganda. I wouldn't support anyone promoting Hamas, same as anyone promoting Isis, Al Qaeda, etc.

Ablondiebutagoody · 02/05/2025 10:14

Because she's a massive hypocrite. Same reason I won't be lectured about climate change by David Attenborough or Chris Packham. One has spent the last 60 years flying around the World with a film crew. Last time I saw the other one, he was flying over the savanna in a helicopter looking at flamingos. Bell end.

David Attenborough hasn't been flying around with film crews for ages. He just provides voiceovers.

Thanks. I actually looked into it as I was quite shocked to hear she was supporting Hamas. She seems to have had some pictures altered. One was of her holding up a book which was changed to something antisemitic and another with her wearing a Hamas headband.

She has attended some protests and held up a support Gaza sign. She was labelled an antisemite for that. I've seen no evidence of Hamas support.

Buy she doesn't usually fly - precisely to not be a hypocrite.

But she is incredibly privileged to be in a position to be able to sail to a conference by boat instead of having to go somewhere and be back 2 days later because they have another meeting to go to, or go to a normal job, or to be able to say she will pay ( or get someone to pay) a train ticket to somewhere when a plane ticket is 10x cheaper. Most people don't have that luxury because they have other things to do, and have a budget they have to stick to.
If you're arguing for a reduction in carbon emissions, tell teenagers to stop buying stuff from Shein and Temu would be more effective than hectoring people at the UN, since she is a teenager herself. China has exceeded the Wests global emissions since the Industrial Revolution in just the last 8 years, most of that is from making tat to sell to us.
If you're arguing for a drastic lowering of the global population, then I'm afraid you are arguing either for a cull of old people, or some kind of drastic way of culling the birthrate in Africa, because the only places with a rising birthrate are in sub Saharan Africa. The rest of the world without exception has a hugely ageing population. Greta and a lot of climate activists would rather go on marches than say out loud the things that would actually make a difference because either they are scared of saying it in China and/or they don't want to be accused of being racist, or they havent really thought of any solutions. Many don't actually want to do the hard things, and make some sort of effective contribution to science or technology. they would rather do the easy things and get accolades on the Internet.

I never understand this argument.

He's filming a show that millions of people will see.

How can you not see that is different?

She may or may not have been aware of the association but I bet the people she was photographed with did.

She’s become a useful idiot.

I am very uncomfortable about the uses GT has been put to. A ND school-refusing mentally unwell teenager didsn't need to be pushed into the spotlight, and she doesn't seem to be able to negotiate the adult world with a public profile, or possibly at all. I actually think she may have FAS, there I said it.
