Why do so many people get married at stately homes?

They're expensive, almost always a pig to get to and everything looks the same (gilding, nice gardens, mostly marquee).

And - although I accept that this isn't what most people would think - we're paying our money to the upper classes to keep them lording it over us.

I don't get why so many people go to nice restaurants when they could just squirt a tube of cheese spread into their mouth in a crack den. What's with that?

And what does marriage have to do with a stately home?

What's it got to do with any venue?

The stately homes round us that do weddings are owned by hotel groups or down at heel gentry. The rich upper classes don't have weddings in their homes.

Nice places with parking, accommodation and catering.

Because religion is bogus (imo) and I wanted somewhere pretty where I could feel like a Jane Austen character 🤷 You can stay there the whole day too.

Mine was like a stately home style building, but was also a hotel, which I why I went for with it.

You can also argue that attending a church wedding keeps religion ruling over us and impacting our laws.

With all that being said, if I had my time again, I'd probably just do registry office and go to the pub 🤷

We got married in a stately home but it had little to do with the upper classes - it had previously housed the coal board for many years and then became a hotel
we chose it because it had nice space inside & outside, fitted all our friends & was a nice hotel in a good location & we aren’t religious so didn’t need or want a church.
no marquee involved but a gorgeous orangery with a field where we played rounders

Because some people like different things to you. A concept many on mumsnet struggle with.
