May he rest in peace. Notable for me how many times people I met or know who are not Catholic said about how good a person they felt he was.

GinGanGoooooolie · 21/04/2025 09:48

He lived by his own principles, eschewed the grandeur wherever possible.

That’s set to continue after his death, he changed the rules to allow him to be buried outside of the Vatican with as little pomp as possible in a simple wooden coffin, saying he was a shepherd and a disciple of Christ, not a powerful figure.

I’m not catholic, I admired Pope Francis. A good man.

Lapsed Catholic here, but I feel sad about this. He was taking the church in a better direction than many before him. RIP.

Agree

SpottedDonkey · 21/04/2025 09:50

If anyone still hasn’t seen Conclave, this would be a good time to watch it. It’s an excellent film with great performances by Ralph Feinnes & Stanley Tucci.

Lampzade · 21/04/2025 09:50

Saddened by his death as he seemed to be a decent person

Emoleno · 21/04/2025 09:50

He was incredibly powerful, but chose to protect child abusers. He was complicit in the abuse of children on an unprecedented scale. Good riddance.

They all seem to have a high tolerance to child abusers.

Zimunya · 21/04/2025 09:52

@Emoleno - thank you! I was wondering if this thread was about an entirely different man!

oh well.
(YANBU, he has indeed died)

There's always one dickhead.

TheHerboriste · 21/04/2025 09:52

How horrible that one of his last encounters was with that smug charlatan JD Vance.

RIP Pope Francis. I’m atheist but he seemed like a good man.

PepperPep · 21/04/2025 09:08

JD Vance, Liz Truss, hmmm.

I had this exact thought.

I’m an atheist but my kids go to catholic school and some of my close friends are catholic. He seemed to make a lot of positive change to the Catholic Church, or at least be trying to nudge it in the right direction (use of condoms to prevent aids for example) so I’m sad to hear he has passed away. I hope he rests in peace.

Presume you mean him for heading up an organisation rife with child abuse?

ComeAsYouAreAsAFriend · 21/04/2025 09:55

Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam

He was a voice for the vulnerable and oppressed with compassion and courage. We need his voice more than ever now.

Annoyeddd · 21/04/2025 09:13

He may have wanted to do this - no one could force him. Met our king, gave JD vance the bums rush and spoke to the devout.
Then went to bed and slipped away.

lol what is the bums rush?! I love this even I though I don’t know what it means 🤣

JennyTals · 21/04/2025 09:58

I bet he really wanted to make that Easter Sunday greeting

rip

HelpMeGetThrough · 21/04/2025 10:04

Charley had best cancel the state visit. Politicians are bad for your health.

Can extend from physically throwing out to generally not agreeing with something or someone

FrenchFancie · 21/04/2025 10:08

I’m sad he has died - as Popes go, he was one of the better ones. The church has lots of issues (child abuse being, of course, one of them) but I always felt like Francis tried his best to live by his standards and do what he could.

I worry about who will be the next Pope - with the world becoming more divided and full of hate, they need to elect someone more moderate (like Pope Francis was) but there’s a couple of potential front runners who are very conservative and could do some damage. Like it or not, the position of Pope is a position as a world leader with strong influence.

Everything has to be done slowly within big organisations so he made some small improvements - condoms, gay people.
Lets hope however gets the white smoke doesn't drag the church backwards

I was brought up as a Catholic, as a teen I saw Pope John Paul ii when he visited UK.I am no longer a practising Christian , but I am surprisingly moved by the news of The Holy Father's passing.

A Pope from Africa or Asia is a great idea in principle. But Catholics and other Christians in those places are often deeply conservative. I wonder if there is a liberal American cardinal who might be ' papabile'? Vance would love that 😂

Poor man, being forced to go out and about so publicly when he was hours from dying.

I see exactly the opposite perspective. Not "poor" anything.

He knew he was hours from death and he will have wanted to be there with the Faithful, celebrating Easter.

what better way to spend his final hours on this earth.

RIP Pope Francis.

Could be an ideal way for the Vatican to avoid a tariff.
