When I saw him on the news yesterday I said it was a shame that he’s being wheeled out when he’s clearly not at all well. But maybe he knew his time for short and wanted to come out one last time. Hope he rests in peace, imagine one of the last people you saw was JD Vance.

Like Queen Elizabeth and Liz Truss.

Eternal rest grant to him O Lord.

Let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.

Very sad but also amazing that he made it to 88 and through one more Easter Sunday. He must have been holding on for that to die the morning after.

He was a great Pope. I didn't pay attention to the last 2 conclaves but I shall follow the next with great interest.

I’m amazed he made it out of hospital. I honestly didn’t think he was going to a few months ago.

RIP Pope Francis.

He did look awful.

White can often make people look pasty and washed out.

vandelier · 21/04/2025 09:33

This is also Jubilee Year in Rome. Quite poignant that he died at Easter Time and during the Jubilee which happens only every 25 years.

He refused to see him apparently

There’s photos of them together.

CamillaMacauley · 21/04/2025 09:35

Makes you think he was holding on for Easter. He seemed a nice guy. Sad but yes a good age.

He refused to see him apparently

But he did. Unfortunately. It probably meant more to Mrs Vance.

Political to the last.

NOTANUM · 21/04/2025 09:37

I’d say the Vance situation turned into a diplomatic incident.. Vance came to see the pope, was fobbed off with a very senior cardinal but not happy. Italian PM got dragged into it and they met anyhow.

It looked like they were trying to dodge it!

NOTANUM · 21/04/2025 09:38

Mrs Vance is not a Catholic.

NineteenSeventyNine · 21/04/2025 09:39

Lapsed Catholic here, but I feel sad about this. He was taking the church in a better direction than many before him. RIP.

Maybe he felt too ill to meet him? If it’s true that Vance threw a strop and forced the issue with an elderly , unwell man then shame on Vance.

Inmydreams88 · 21/04/2025 09:41

I’m not religious but he was one of the only people publicly urging to stop the wars in Gaza and Ukraine and urging people like Trump and Vance to have some human compassion. RIP Pope Francis.

SpottedDonkey · 21/04/2025 09:41

Easter Sunday is the most important day of the church’s year. It seems that Francis hung on long enough to perform his duties yesterday before passing away this morning.

He was, by all accounts, a kind, humble and decent man. Qualities which not all his predecessors possessed. My condolences to his loved ones & all who mourn his death.

ExitPursuedByABare · 21/04/2025 09:42

RIP Papa.

A good man.

SabreIsMyFave · 21/04/2025 09:42

Oh my gosh how sad. 😢 I thought he looked a bit shaky and ill over the weekend. This is like our darling Queen who was still performing duties/meeting Liz Truss etc, and then died a few days later.

R.I.P. Can't remember how long he's been Pope. About 12-13 years?

Aww, sad. Sad

EasternStandard · 21/04/2025 09:43

Rest in peace. I was sad to hear this.

Sharkknife · 21/04/2025 09:43

There was a worshipper on the news last night saying how glad she was to have seen him in such good health, I'm not sure who she was looking at.. He was clearly very frail, I'm not surprised he's died

foxlover47 · 21/04/2025 09:44

Very sad , he seemed like a very decent man , passing on Easter Sunday too.
sleep well 🕊️

PepperPep · 21/04/2025 09:08

JD Vance, Liz Truss, hmmm.

Exactly what I thought yesterday when I saw the pope on the balcony and heard he has a meeting with JD Vance. He already didn't look well without having to go through that.
Rip

TorroFerney · 21/04/2025 09:45

Saw him in Rome last year and found it quite affecting despite not being religious. Huge service with loads of different nationalities, it was like a pop concert. What I did find touching and kind was when different priests and bishops etc were waiting to see him, they’d all kneel before him and you could see him trying to stop the elderly and infirm ones from trying to kneel.

https://news.sky.com/story/pope-francis-has-died-the-vatican-says-12890455 just that really. Will they do the conclave now? Or in a few days as it’s Easter?

The Conclave cannot happen until after the funeral...that is usually a week after the death, so that people can travel to Rome, to pay respects. Traditionally it is about a fortnight after the death, to ensure that all the eligible Cardinals are able to attend.

Apart from the sinking feeling in my heart that he’d died my first thought was about how awful to have spent some of your last day with JD Vance.
