To be disappointed with my hot cross bun

I have looked so forward to trying the salted caramel and chocolate hot cross bun which I purchased from my local supermarket. I now feel a bit disappointed, not quite the taste sensation I was hoping for. I am going to have to eat another one just to be sure aren’t I?

Stick to traditional ones in future perhaps?

mangomaggie · 18/04/2025 10:35

I'm toying with an apple cinnamon one. Should I stay trad ? Booths if it makes a difference and anyone can give the recommendation for best booths one. Not chocolate though please

tryingtobesogood · 18/04/2025 10:38

Apple and cinnamon ones are quite disappointing in my opinion.

@PrincessofEuphrania I do think you had better have a second, just to be certain. Maybe toasted this time?

BitOutOfPractice · 18/04/2025 10:39

This is not a judgement you want to make lightly op. Have another.

I can’t see the point of Apple and cinnamon to be honest. Might as well go trad.

tryingtobesogood · 18/04/2025 10:42

M&S highly fruited ones are my favourite this year, really moist and fruity and flavoursome. I can’t talk about Booths as we don’t have them down here 😢

Sahara123 · 18/04/2025 10:42

Sounds revolting to be honest. I always just stick to traditional ones. I’m going to have to go and get one now …

Just had a pleasant Sainsbury’s fresh bakery one.

i didn’t have four!

JustAnInchident · 18/04/2025 10:44

Were they the coop ones? Rubbish if so 😂
The Waitrose lemon and white chocolate are amazing, just fyi! The fudge from Asda weren’t too bad.
I’ve a five week old baby and people keep bringing flavoured hot cross buns with them when they visit. Those and tulips. Lucky me!

DawnBreaks · 18/04/2025 10:45

What about these? I'm sorely tempted. 😄

MasterBeth · 18/04/2025 10:45

I don't believe in kooky-flavoured hot cross buns.

Pinch of spice and some raisins. Done.

Even the extra-fruity ones are too fruity.

Don't fuck around with a hot cross bun. Your salted caramel and chocolate bullshit is just a jealous muffin.

DearMartha · 18/04/2025 10:46

Ha! Just had the same flavour and was not thrilled either!

restbite · 18/04/2025 10:46

just stick to the traditional one, with loads of butter toasted😍

CornishTiger · 18/04/2025 10:47

Treated myself to M&S Dippy eggs ones and lemon curd. Neither were great tbh.

Banoffee by Aldi were ok though

DappledThings · 18/04/2025 10:47

Some things just shouldn't be fucked about with. Hot Cross Buns are one of them

Tootiredtowhat · 18/04/2025 10:48

Your fault for messing with a classic.

IsThisLifeNow · 18/04/2025 10:49

The tiramisu ones were fab, I was tempted by the fudge ones in asda, but maybe next time

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 18/04/2025 10:50

Dippy egg are always out of stock on Ocado. Might just whack a crème egg in the middle of a HCB.

NortyTorty · 18/04/2025 10:50

I was excited to try a rhubarb and custard one. So disappointing, so have returned to the classic which did not disappoint.

PositivityVibes · 18/04/2025 10:52

Stick to traditional then there’s no risk of disappointment!

However I did get a lemon one from M&S and it was bloody lovely.

BestIsWest · 18/04/2025 10:52

Classic, all the way. But not toasted. Just loads of butter.

Dexterrolledoffthesofa · 18/04/2025 10:53

I’m firmly of the opinion that hot cross bun IS the flavour, and should be left alone! Anything else is just a flavoured bun!!
Like coffee. Can’t be doing with fancy ‘flavours’. I’m a traditionalist, me 😃

PaintDecisions · 18/04/2025 10:55

I can highly recommend the M&S lemon curd filled ones. Absolutely 👌.
