To be disappointed with my hot cross bun

PrincessofEuphrania · 18/04/2025 10:11

I have looked so forward to trying the salted caramel and chocolate hot cross bun which I purchased from my local supermarket. I now feel a bit disappointed, not quite the taste sensation I was hoping for. I am going to have to eat another one just to be sure aren’t I?

But yes, in answer to your question, OF COURSE you have to eat another. Purely for comparison, you understand. And research.

booksnbaking · 18/04/2025 10:55

head tilt Oh, don’t you make your own? tinkly laugh

I’m in the wrong country for hot cross buns. No shortage of rather disappointing currant buns all year round, though, and some admittedly nice fruited bready things at Easter, but they are Not.Hot.Cross.Buns. I have massive bun envy at all your caramel, chocolate, dippy egg options, even the disappointing ones.

On the up side, I’ve finally found a HCB recipe that works for me after decades and decades of bricks that wouldn’t even make a decent bread pudding, so hurrah for that.

ThatBreezyHam · 18/04/2025 10:55

I'm always disappointed with HCB but I seem to forget that in the 10-12 months after the last one, get excited about buying some and then am disappointed all over again 🤣

I can highly recommend the M&S lemon curd filled ones. Absolutely 👌.

Oh God. I’m going to have to emigrate.

MightAsWellBeGretel · 18/04/2025 10:58

The only sensible solution here is get them all, obvs. Then you won't be disappointed.

Maybe a bit stuffed though.

Whatwouldnanado · 18/04/2025 10:59

Persuaded by adventurous DD we ventured into the realms of Tesco’s rhubarb and custard bun offering. Vile. Stick to M&S luxury very fruity jobs. I’d make my own but the smell of yeast makes me heave.

That sounds disgusting to be honest. Salted caramel should not exist! 😖

And salted caramel and chocolate hot cross bun? What fresh hell is this? Shock

SiobhanSharpe · 18/04/2025 11:04

The thing about hot X buns is that they’re essentially fairly plain.
I could certainly do with more fruit and spice in most of the ones I’ve had. We get them from a local bakery and my first point applies.
However, butter (toasted or not) is essential. Home made jam on top is also nice.

Sgtmajormummy · 18/04/2025 11:05

I’m in a country that doesn’t have HCB, too.
My “IrishMammyCooks” ones are rising as I write.
I’m an impatient cook so don’t usually bake with yeast. They’d better be good or I could just as well have bought a delicious local speciality: pumpkin fruit bun.

In statistics a large subject field is more accurate.
Eat all 4.

M&S extremely cheesy and great. I’ve had one toasted with eggs, an avocado and a dollop of ketchup for breakfast today.

Chanonrypoint · 18/04/2025 13:01

I have just had an M&S cheese hot cross bun filled with more cheese, tomato, rocket and red onion chutney, done in the air fryer for a few minutes.
It was delicious.

PrincessofEuphrania · 18/04/2025 14:35

I didn’t even know that savoury hot cross buns were a thing! Sounds tempting but not sure I could handle another hot cross bun disappointment (I did eat another one and still hold the same opinion- I have since farmed out the remaining two to my children who asked if they could have the ‘normal’ hot cross buns next time!).

Oh FFS, I’m going to have to emigrate AND buy an air fryer.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 18/04/2025 16:36

Although my preference is traditional, DS requested M&S extremely chocolatey ones and I must admit they are delicious. The cheese ones are good too but I still haven't forgiven M&S for discontinuing the cheese & marmite a few years ago 😔 Slightly off topic, but I had a Simnel scone at a National trust place the other day which was good!

GroovyChick87 · 18/04/2025 16:39

I had a fudge one from Asda yesterday that was underwhelming. I've wanted to try the cheese ones from M and S but not been there in a while.

sixtyandfabulousofcourse · 18/04/2025 16:41

The traditional ones are addictive love them. yesterday had strawberries and cream ones from Tesco and loved them!

Energe · 18/04/2025 16:45

I had the rhubarb and custard Aldi one today. Absolute disappointment on a tea plate.

Mickeychampionwhatgoodami · 18/04/2025 16:46

I'm normally a traditionalist when it comes to hot cross buns.
We tried the Asda triple chocolate ones.
Done them in the air fryer for about 3mins
Delicious 😋

OchonAgusOchonOh · 18/04/2025 16:51

The most disappointing HCB I ever had was a chocolate chip one. Not because it was, in and of itself unpleasant, but because I was expecting an ordinary HCB and thought the chips were raisins.

HCBs should not be messed with. I made some today. No chocolate or caramel in sight. They were yum.

Totallyexhaustedandperplexed · 18/04/2025 17:03

I was so disappointed by the dippy egg ones from M&S. Wish I'd stuck to the standard ones from Aldi

Agreed! Finally managed to get my hands on a pack today after them being sold out all the time and they were a huge disappointment! Been over-hyped on tik tok I think.

Cactus2025 · 18/04/2025 17:10

Booths blueberry!

TheCurious0range · 18/04/2025 17:13

DawnBreaks · 18/04/2025 10:45

What about these? I'm sorely tempted. 😄

I don't like hot cross buns but I told DS he could have some of these over Easter weekend, but they were sold out yesterday and today

I was excited to try a rhubarb and custard one. So disappointing, so have returned to the classic which did not disappoint.

I bought rhubarb & custard ones from Tesco, they were beyond bland 😔 so much so I actually put a review on the Tesco website - so disappointing!
