Gold top milk is elite. Discuss.

Ditched the watery, insipid skimmed milk years ago for semi skimmed. Now gone the whole hog (the whole cow?) and enjoying gold top guernsey milk with the cream on top - added bonus, it arrives on my doorstep in a glass bottle from a local dairy.

Cant be beaten!

Can someone say more about this possible banning of glass bottles by government? Why would they do that?!

as an aside, does anyone know what happens to the fat which is skimmed to make skimmed or semi milk? Any dairy farmers who want to comment??

No point asking the farmer- ask the dairy that standardises, pasteurises and homogenises the milk.

The fat that is removed is either kept as cream, used for butter or other dairy products- cheese, icecream, anhydrous milk fat etc etc.

Why not ask a farmer?

Producers of raw materials often know about how their produce is used in various ways. Some processing companies which only process a smaller handful of final product than the raw material is used in.

The coffee stall outside London XC uses non-homogenised milk and it is, hands down, the best coffee I have ever had (and I drink about 4 cups a day). I will queue 20 minutes in the morning for one of their coffees.

I won't use it for cooking (except this chicken pilaf I do, where Gold Top is 10000% needed) but for coffees, hell yes.

How interesting! I want to try that. Is it a stall or a shop? And where exactly?

Yes and no, @thinktwice36. I can't drink coffee with full-fat milk - I've got used to the taste of it with semi-skimmed, and it tastes too creamy with full fat. But I do love a glass of cold milk, and that has to be full fat, preferably gold top. It's my treat, now I can't drink fruit juice or nice cordials (thanks to type 2 diabetes).

Almond milk in our house

Oh! Poor you, I am sorry.

@dizzydizzydizzy

It’s called ‘Blues and Royals.’

It’s a stand but not really a stand (if that makes sense). They can be a bit slow…although no slower than Pret or Starbucks! But they are absolutely excellent, really good, smooth, coffee.

It’s right outside of Embankment tube by the Starbucks, but I walk down from XC. It’s basically a 30 second walk. Honestly, I cannot recommend it enough them enough! Really nice owners as well

thinktwice36 · 15/04/2025 14:51

@LandSharksAnonymous i’ve seen this one at embankment - on the to-check-out list now 👍

Ah thanks! I’ve seen it before but never tried it .

Jealous of your elite delivery of elite & gorgeous milk. I'm currently on skimmed milk as I'm trying to lose weight. It's like water compared to full cream Jersey milk!

Didn’t think you could get it anymore

I buy Graham's gold top which you can buy in Asda, Waitrose and M&S. Probably other supermarkets too but I only go to those. They also do a "smooth gold" which is extra creamy milk - lush on cereals.

Honestly, I weigh less eating full fat proper food and ditching the low fat, (sometimes) higher in sugar alternatives. Hugs, it’s a grind! Xx

I’ve looked at this milk as I’ve read about the superior quality of the Jersey/Guernsey milk but I can’t find it unhomogenised and I can’t bring myself to buy homogeneous milk… (ie most standard milk). @thinktwice36 any chance you’ve found an unhomogenised version?
