Gold top milk is elite. Discuss.

Ditched the watery, insipid skimmed milk years ago for semi skimmed. Now gone the whole hog (the whole cow?) and enjoying gold top guernsey milk with the cream on top - added bonus, it arrives on my doorstep in a glass bottle from a local dairy.

Cant be beaten!

So you hopped over the silver top whom milk snd went straight for the gold.

Gold top was a treat when I was little. We also had green top, which was unpasteurised. We can’t get that any more sadly. I’m still an in unhomogenised milk fan and I’ll probably join a protest if the government follow through with their threat to ban glass bottles.

*whole milk (not whom)

Didn’t know the jersey/guernsey difference - thanks! X

They are different in temperament too but I always loved working with them both, such wonderful animals

We always go full fat. The taste is one thing but distorting food so that you lose a few pounds rather than showing restraint has always been a weird concept to me. One day all the quacks who keep telling us to eat "marg" and "blends" instead of butter (looking at you NHS 40 year Health Check advisors) will have to admit they've been steering us wrong.

We’re the same. Full fat milk and yoghurt. No artificial sweeteners.

thinktwice36 · 15/04/2025 11:06

@Genevieva I did briefly flirt with silver 😂 but actually, i was suffering menopausal with breakouts and found I wasn’t getting that with non-dairy milks. Then I read about the A1/A2 proteins differences and health benefits generally and gave gold top a whirl - result, no more hormonal acne. Anecdotal perhaps but I am fine with that, somethings working and it tastes delicious!

That’s a great anecdote.

Has anyone tried Royal Homestyle yogurt? There might be other brands similar. Bought it without realising it was 'gold top' and never looked back!! Thick layer of cream on top that you have to be careful to transport home on the flat. Yum!

You can sometimes buy direct from farm for unpasteurised but it does depend on how close you are to such a farm as to whether it's worth it

SnoozingFox · 15/04/2025 11:18

Unfortunately not for those of us with high cholesterol. I am happy with my semi-skimmed, I am scarred from the bottles of milk we were given as a child with a thick layer of yuk floating on the top.

SnoozingFox · 15/04/2025 11:19

as an aside, does anyone know what happens to the fat which is skimmed to make skimmed or semi milk? Any dairy farmers who want to comment??

Blarn · 15/04/2025 11:20

I really missed the organic non-homogenised milk from Waitrose when Ocado moved to M&S. I have organic blue top from the milkman which is homogenised but seems to be less so than supermarket ones as it does have a small amount of cream on top.

I hate full fat in tea though, so I never drink tea at home. But semi skimmed milk is just a disappointment. But I am also someone who didn't drink milk for years after having to drink the mini bottles of no longer chilled milk at breaktime at school. They used to make me wretch.

Gliblet · 15/04/2025 11:20

Ooh, I'm off to look in the Sainsbury's round the corner for Royal Homestyle yoghurt 😁 thanks for the tip @Catandsquirrel

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 15/04/2025 11:21

I used to work with a herd of Jerseys. Sneaking in to the bulk milk tank and scooping myself out a jug full of creamy milk before the milk tanker came to pick it up was one of the BEST things EVER.

I only occasionally buy the gold top milk now because otherwise I would guzzle it by the pint and gain four stone. It is the only milk that the dog likes so I tell myself I'm getting it for her (she can be off her food for a bit and I need to get food and liquid into her) and then drink most of it myself

It's made into butter and cream

SnoozingFox · 15/04/2025 11:29

Makes sense!

PyrannosaurusRex · 15/04/2025 11:30

Out here in the middle of nowhere we have organic milk dispensers that the local dairy farmers have set up across the county. The cows very obligingly do flavoured milkshakes too. Ice cold, full fat, full of protein and vitamins, minimal food miles, £1.50 a litre to the producer.

A farmer I know used to sell their skimmed cream to a Polish cosmetic company; after Brexit knocked that on the head, they set up an ice cream parlour just to do something with it, and never looked back.

Foodonashoestring · 15/04/2025 10:46

Almond milk in our house

I tried that and was surprised to find out it was less than 3% almonds. It should really say almond flavoured water.

we have a brilliant local farm that uses its own milk to make the ice cream. It’s lovely they supply lots of local places but it’s nice to go and see the cows, the dairy shed is literally just across the yard from kitchen.

The word ‘elite’ should only be used by gen z ! It’s as bad as ‘awesome’.

Non-homogenised milk is so much healthier for us. Blasting the fat through tiny holes in a pipe to make it sit uniformly through the milk creates so many challenges for our bodies.

How? Why? I’d genuinely like to understand please.

Thick layer of yuk

otherwise known as “cream” 🤦‍♀️

I can’t do it - I have semi skimmed in tea/coffe but couldn’t drink it on its own because I hate the taste of milk especially if it’s creamy!
I do generally agree that full fat is healthier but just can’t bring myself to drink it. I do have real butter and full fat Greek yogurt though.
My semi skimmed is delivered in glass bottles from a local dairy though so not all bad.

BeaAndBen · 15/04/2025 12:54

Milk is great. Delivered, bottled milk is particularly so. I can visit the cows, they are 3 miles up the road.

SnowFrogJelly · 15/04/2025 13:02

Didn’t think you could get it anymore
