Gold top milk is elite. Discuss.

Ditched the watery, insipid skimmed milk years ago for semi skimmed. Now gone the whole hog (the whole cow?) and enjoying gold top guernsey milk with the cream on top - added bonus, it arrives on my doorstep in a glass bottle from a local dairy.

Cant be beaten!

Non-homogenised milk is so much healthier for us. Blasting the fat through tiny holes in a pipe to make it sit uniformly through the milk creates so many challenges for our bodies.

PurpleChrayn · 15/04/2025 09:31

YABU for “discuss”. We don’t like that here.

BigDahliaFan · 15/04/2025 09:33

I used to love the cream on the top of the milk in my porridge. Now I buy full fat but it's homogenised.....

I don’t think anyone likes it anywhere do they?

Clearly I do.

We always go full fat. The taste is one thing but distorting food so that you lose a few pounds rather than showing restraint has always been a weird concept to me. One day all the quacks who keep telling us to eat "marg" and "blends" instead of butter (looking at you NHS 40 year Health Check advisors) will have to admit they've been steering us wrong.

Langdale3 · 15/04/2025 09:42

I go for non homogenised from a local dairy. Full fat milk has more fat soluble vitamins per ounce.

Only acceptable on exam papers IMO.

probably why it sets me teeth on edge when it pops up here, because it takes me back to my GCSES 😬.

Closest thing I can get to the best milk I've ever had - unpasteurised raw milk from the cows at my great uncle's farm.

I lost five stone over the last few years, and that's included switching from low fat to full fat Greek yoghurt, from marg to butter, and stopping buying skimmed or semi skimmed milk. I just have less milk or butter than I would have had semi skimmed or marg. Had a load of blood tests recently pre-surgery and my cholesterol, blood pressure, resting pulse and blood sugars are all well within healthy range as well so I'm fairly sure I haven't absolutely monstered my arteries 😁

thinktwice36 · 15/04/2025 10:43

@Gliblet totally agree, I’d try raw it was available near to me. Next best is my lovely local dairy guernsey milk - can hear the moo-ing!

Love FF greek yogurt, keeps me super full 👍

Almond milk in our house

Leavemyteam · 15/04/2025 10:47

I buy full fat, I prefer gold top, but I would just drink pints of it so can’t trust myself to keep it in the fridge

Tried that, wasn’t a huge fan. Bit of an aftertaste I wasn’t keen on…

The title of the thread has nothing to do with your OP though. Is it ' elitist'? Probably if you mean 'straight from the cow' you would be elite, as you would be a member of an elite group of people, but you've ordered it from the milkman. I get my milk delivered. I did order non homogenised once when my mil came to stay, but I don't like it, because of the texture. As I can get it delivered and you can buy it from a supermarket, it's not ' elitist'.

LandSharksAnonymous · 15/04/2025 10:50

The coffee stall outside London XC uses non-homogenised milk and it is, hands down, the best coffee I have ever had (and I drink about 4 cups a day). I will queue 20 minutes in the morning for one of their coffees.

I won't use it for cooking (except this chicken pilaf I do, where Gold Top is 10000% needed) but for coffees, hell yes.

Hotafternoon · 15/04/2025 10:51

I buy Jersey milk when it's reduced and make a rice pudding with it. It's lovely. If I'm feeling extra luxurious, I add cream to it too.

I have butter too and have done for years, none of that plasticky rubbish, I also like it thick on crumpets and toasted teacakes.

I have semi skimmed just for tea and porridge, I dislike skimmed intensely, it's like water. Bleugh!! 🤢

MarkingBad · 15/04/2025 10:57

I used to work for Channel Island breed herds. They are considered different to the other breeds in temperament and care in dairy farming.

The milk is superior and considered so in the dairy industry because of the much higher butterfat content in comparison to other breeds milk. It is quite literally better milk from those tiny cows. Jersey cow milk is slightly higher in butterfat tha Guernsey but both are excellent. It attracts a premium price because of its quality.

Whether you like the taste or not is another thing. I like it and yes have it delivered too.

OP said "elite", not "elitist" as in "very good".

I also found the use of "elite" odd. Seems to be a very common thread word and not one I hear in everyday use.

Wellhellotheremydear · 15/04/2025 11:00

Full fat homogenised organic is my favourite tasting milk. Not keen on the cream top.

Didn’t know the jersey/guernsey difference - thanks! X
