Thong bikinis in public swimming pools

Had a bit of a shock today: went with my friend to a public pool and a young woman came in displaying both her butt cheeks in one of those thong bikinis.

These seem to be common on beaches nowadays (I love getting the sun to my bum but I wouldn't inflict it on anyone, and do it in the garden!) but I was a bit uncomfortable seeing it in the local council pool. It's not like the sun can get to it in there! As the baths are much more packed than a beach, one winds up getting closer to someone's naked bottom than one would prefer. I'm also not sure how hygenic it is. Wondered if I am just getting old and prudish or if other people react similarly!

I'm not a prude, not do I care what other people wear, and I don't think it is any more or less unhygenic.
BUT I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would want to get their butt out in a indoor municiple pool, I see it all tge time in our local pool and I can't work it out. I find it an odd choice of clothing, similar to when I saw a man today at the bus stop in the village with his shirt off. Or if I saw a man at the pool in a borat mankini 😂It completely befuzzles me. I just assume that there is some fashion trend that I am not party to, I am either too old or not cool enough to get it.

Once again, as before women are allowed to make personal choices about what they wear.

If you want to be able to wear what you prefer, then you need to tolerate other people's choices, even if you don't like them.

Even if you think they are inappropriate, attention seeking, undignified, immodest, unpleasant, unhygienic, bad example to your children, scares your teenage son, makes you uncomfortable - you still need to put up with it.

Unless it's illegal, it's permitted.

This just isn’t the case though is it. Would you be happy if a man or woman walked into the public baths completely naked? Or wearing a Bianca censori-esk see-through number?

I feel the same as you.

When I wonder whether something is sexist I ask: ‘are the men doing it?’ It’s Caitlin Moran’s sexism test, I think

In this case, no. And people would probably find it unacceptable if they were.

So YANB a prude. It’s weird for anyone to show others too much of their bums, I think

This.

if it were for comfort or practicality men would be doing it.

and judging by the threads in her when partners visit France and needs to comply with the French speedo pool rules, the vast majority of people don’t think speedo’s are appropriate, let along a thong or borat style costume.

the last couple of holidays I’ve been on thong and t-back bikinis have been banned from hotel pool areas.

there’s been threads as well about teen DD’s wearing thong bikinis on family holidays, and the general consensus is it’s not appropriate to be wearing around grandad and older family members.

but somehow it’s ok down a local council pool?

ArseofOrion · 12/04/2025 21:14

Yeah they’re pretty revealing and let’s face it, just encourages men to ogle. But they’re pretty common place these days so I wouldn’t be shocked if I saw it!

seven201 · 12/04/2025 21:18

It's very awkward queuing on stairs to go down a flume where there's a thong bum right in front of you. I do admire the confidence of girls and women who wear them.

Yikes101 · 12/04/2025 21:34

My arse is under the water 99% of the time I am at the public pool, as are everyone else’s. I don’t give a monkeys about the size of their swimsuit. I am bothered by hairy armpits and spotty backs though.

LittleCharlotte · 12/04/2025 21:35

Switcher · 12/04/2025 20:21

I just got my my wax done and very tempted to go and buy a thong bikini just to annoy people like you.

I'm sorry to hear you have hairy buttocks. 😞

It’s the influence of porn. It gets everywhere.

Yes, I think that's it. Girls are encouraged to show as much as possible. I just can't understand walking around with my arse out. When I was at a professional exhibition a woman was walking around in very very short shorts, so you could see her buttocks, and I thought the men with me would think it was great but fortunately they were pretty disgusted. It was so weird at a business event where everyone else was dressed very smartly. I guess exposing the buttocks is the new normal! When I was a young girl I certainly did flaunt my wares but buttocks were never a Thing.

I'm going to check to see if the pool has swimwear guidelines.

I don't get them myself. Can you imagine a man wearing one 😂

Lol. Those things are very high cut everywhere.

"Fortunately they were pretty disgusted" .
Why is it "fortunate" that the men were disgusted??

Therewasacat · 12/04/2025 21:53

I couldn't wear one if I was actually planning on swimming properly. Doing breast stroke the way my legs move I'd be flashing everything under the water in a thong. Different if you're lying on the beach and sunbathing.

LlynTegid · 12/04/2025 21:55

I would not feel uncomfortable but they look awful usually. Having said that looking awful is not confined to this. We don't do style in the UK on the whole.

whiteswan87 · 12/04/2025 21:56

I'm not bothered about them from a hygiene point of view but I do feel like they are a very sexualised item of swimwear and I'd rather not have someone's uncovered arse cheeks in my face when I'm queueing for the water slide!

Millyjanice · 12/04/2025 22:01

I don’t see why it’s unhygienic. It’s just an area of skin. Wouldn’t bother me. I probably wouldn’t even notice. I’d be too busy swimming.

I think that's the hygiene concern. I just don't like having someone's naked bum in my face without prior invitation. 🤣 I guess it feels like there's not much covering the bumhole and that gives me the ick.

Does that include men too? Or just women?

There was one a few weeks ago as well.

Rinse and repeat. The bread and butter of MN.
It’s like movie plots. All the good ones have been done to death already so they just keep regurgitating the same old ones.

Weekmindedfool · 12/04/2025 22:09

Do try harder OP.

Blinkyy · 12/04/2025 22:12

Surely a usual swimming costume holds your bum cheeks together if it’s stretchy fabric, which they usually are. A thong would be separating them - yuck -I can see why they are banned in some pools.

Evenstar · 12/04/2025 22:16

Perhaps some people are old enough to remember the late Peter Stringfellow wearing a thong on the beach and how repulsive people found that it is not just about women , YANBU and I don’t want to see anyone’s backside in public.

LittleCharlotte · 12/04/2025 22:35

OMG I am old enough to remember Stringfellow's strung fellows, but had blotted them out of my mind! Curse you for reviving that memory!

OP posts:
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 12/04/2025 22:42

I’ve just googled Peter Stringfellow thong.

l wish l hadn’t…

l intensely disliked him. The thong was not an added bonus.

Rallacks · 12/04/2025 22:49

I don't think it's remotely grim from a hygiene point of view but it's fucking seriously gross in an environment where there are children around.

Our entire body is just flesh and 'natural' so where is the line drawn when it comes to being out in public where there are children? Why does she bother wearing a bikini top? It's only flesh???

There are some proper weirdos on here.
