To think laundry isn’t the easiest chore

outofofficeagain · 23/03/2025 19:07

I do all the washing. DH says ‘it’s not that big a deal’

I do.

It’s a lot to do multiple loads a week, and dry it, and sort it into piles.

There are times when I find it overwhelming.

AIBU to say that if he thinks it’s so easy, then he should do it.

I don't think it's that taxing a chore to tbh but it is is relentless.

TickingAlongNicely · 23/03/2025 19:11

If its easy he can do it.

Fantina · 23/03/2025 19:11

It’s the kind of chore that if you don’t keep on top of it constantly then life quickly gets out of control - like the dishes

Buttonknot · 23/03/2025 19:12

That'll be him doing it all for the next few weeks then!

kiwiblue · 23/03/2025 19:15

I do all the laundry too and I think it's quite a mental load. DH never has to think about whose sheets need doing, towels, what clothes the DC need etc. It's an ongoing, big job with actually a lot of time spent thinking about what needs washing next, I think!

This. Like washing up. You need to be organised and on-it, but it isn't difficult.

what are your dh’s chores?

TeaIsNice · 23/03/2025 19:15

you only make it as hard as you want. we plonk in machine, plonk in dryer/line/clothes horse. Plonk in wardrobe. Iron if really needed. Washing done every other day, short cycle unless stinky running gear

ejmog · 23/03/2025 19:17

The perfect day is empty laundry basket cos it is nigh on impossible the minute it'd empty .....I change the bedding . It is not a easy chore but my favourite

Garlicgarlicgarlic · 23/03/2025 19:17

I only need to do a load once every two weeks. No separating stuff or ironing, and it either dries outside or inside.

Does your husband leave it to you?

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 23/03/2025 19:17

Yabu, it’s by far the easiest chore.

NoKnit · 23/03/2025 19:18

Mine thinks put it in machine switch it on and job done 🤣

TeaAndCake · 23/03/2025 19:18

I bloody love laundry but as a household of 5 it is also a chore but as said upthread it is definitely relentless. You can’t let it build up too much as it very soon becomes overwhelming.

Also, being the only person responsible for it is a huge job to take on alone.

Tell your DH to sod right off.

HansHolbein · 23/03/2025 19:19

Sorting it into piles is the worst. The worst.

CheeseWisely · 23/03/2025 19:22

I do all the laundry and in return DH does 95% of the cooking. All other household tasks are split equally. I have by FAR the easier thing to be solely responsible for IMO.

Imperfectpolly · 23/03/2025 19:24

It depends. Its the easiest chore for me because I tumble dry 99% of the clothes, don't iron and have 4 baskets in the utility room (one for each person) to put the clean washing into. Baskets then emptied once a week into wardrobes. Probably do 5 washes a week.
But if you asked me a year ago when I didn't have a tumble dryer or utility room, it was not easy.

Tallyrand · 23/03/2025 19:24

Family of 4 with 2 under 4s I can concur it is a relentless task. If the machine isn't on or a load on the line I worry I am behind.

Bedding gets changed every Saturday.

My DD has had a bout of sickness recently so the amount of bedding and throws I've had to wash has been unbelievable.

TeapotTitties · 23/03/2025 19:26

We're all different obviously but I agree with your DH.

We just get on with it without giving it any thought.

It's not like we're walking miles to the river and beating the washing against rocks 😁

BeHere · 23/03/2025 19:27

Agree it's not the difficulty, it's the relentlessness. You never really get one load washed, dry and away before the next one is well underway. It actually still prefer it to some jobs, but that's a downside.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 23/03/2025 19:27

When my mum was doing her laundry in the 60s and 70s and had to hand-wash everything- including terry nappies then yes , laundry was a hard chore.
Now? Stick it in the machine and press start?
What's hard about that?

Hankunamatata · 23/03/2025 19:28

The only horrendous bit is putting it all away

BeHere · 23/03/2025 19:31

Nothing, that's a small part of the job and just about the easiest bit.

I don't find doing the laundry particularly hard either, but it must be obvious which are the bits of it that people actually find a struggle?

Ilovecleaning · 23/03/2025 19:34

A lot of men are full of shit. They know fuck all about domestic stuff that they never do. Then they make comments about how easy it is.

That’s me and dh too! Except he really does 99.9% of the cooking. And he has done the ironing tonight… probably while cursing me under his breath.

Bearbookagainandagain · 23/03/2025 19:39

Everyone is different so I don't think you'll agree.
It's one I personally hate doing, not that much the washing now that we have a tumble drier, but putting the clothes away is my worst chore.

I'm not sure you need to agree though. I would look at how time consuming each task is, and then everyone pick their favourite (or least hated when you get to the bottom of the list!).
