To think laundry isn’t the easiest chore

outofofficeagain · 23/03/2025 19:07

I do all the washing. DH says ‘it’s not that big a deal’

I do.

It’s a lot to do multiple loads a week, and dry it, and sort it into piles.

There are times when I find it overwhelming.

AIBU to say that if he thinks it’s so easy, then he should do it.

I’d take laundry over cooking.

Any day, every day.

changednameagain1234 · 23/03/2025 20:09

???

Did you have a question?

Summerishere123 · 23/03/2025 20:47

Its the socks for me. I fucking hate sorting them. So they all go in a basket and everyone has to find their own every morning. Every now and then I might match them up. I hate having to put it all away. I do 6-7 washes a week and it never seems to end!

alwaysdeleteyourcookies · 23/03/2025 20:48

But then I never iron. Ever. My life is too short for that.

Heidi2018 · 23/03/2025 20:48

Wolfpa · 23/03/2025 20:33

My initial question was asking if they are including the ironing as part of the laundry. I agree that with ironing it takes longer but lots of people don’t bother anymore.

I don't iron but the hassle of the sorting, the washing, the drying, the folding, the putting away drives me insane! Hate it!!!!

Garlicgarlicgarlic · 23/03/2025 20:47

Did you have a question?

Yes. How the fuck do you only do one load of washing every two weeks? How do you fit it all in to the washing machine? Like all the clothes, bedding, towels, kitchen cloth etc... how?

Boredlass · 23/03/2025 20:49

I don’t do any of the laundry. DH does it all. Thankfully.

Garlicgarlicgarlic · 23/03/2025 20:50

notatinydancer · 23/03/2025 20:17

Sheets ?
how many people in your household ?
How is it possible to do one load every two weeks ?

A childfree home, the bed sheets get washed every two or three weeks, combined with clothes it might be more than one load, but not enough to fill a second load, so the remainder can wait until the drum is full.
Towels don't need washed after each use, and no sports clothes or whatever else generates loads of dirty stuff.

CarpetKnees · 23/03/2025 20:52

YABU.
I'd take laundry over almost any other household job.
The machine basically does almost all of the work, whilst I can get on and do something else.

Fupoffyagrasshole · 23/03/2025 20:53

I stopped doing husbands laundry and it got a bit easier 🤣🤣 he does his once a week

i do mine and the kids - what I find makes it easier is having less clothes - the baby only has about 7 vests and sleep suits and some leggings and jumpers - and I’m doing a load every day so he always has clean stuff but it’s being worn almost immediately so there’s never big loads waiting to be put away etc and it can’t really get out of control

I don’t particularly like it as a task - but I like to manage it as have a good system 🤣

seven201 · 23/03/2025 20:53

I have a love hate relationship with washing. My dh has a dirty job and sometimes mine can be, plus two kids means a lot of washing - somehow 2 loads a day ish. I feel like a champion when the washing is up-to-date. It was a lot harder before having a proper clothes drying space (we have one of those ceiling mounted airers), a tumble drier and a surface accessible for folding clean clothes. Without a well designated space it's a really shitty chore.

Given your update about the potential adhd playing a big factor, it's time for dh to be in charge. Think of a task you can swap with him, if you think that's necessary.

BrightLightTonight · 23/03/2025 20:54

It’s not exactly rocket science. Sort it, shove it into a machine, dry it and put it in a wardrobe.

MsNevermore · 23/03/2025 20:54

I fucking hate laundry with a passion.

I’m fine putting it in the washer. I’m fine putting it in the dryer.
But folding and putting away?
No.
Absolutely hate it.
I keep telling my husband that I’m going to hire a cleaner of sorts. Not to actually clean anything in the house…..simply to fold the laundry because I hate it so much 🫠🫠🫠

So, you don't wash your bedding or towels often....grim ,but okay .

But you can fit 2 weeks of clothes, a bedding set, at least one towel (hopefully more...) and any sundry items such as tea towels, flannels etc in less than 2 loads?

How big is your washing machine???

iamnotalemon · 23/03/2025 20:55

I mean, a machine does it for you, so it’s not as though you are down the banks of a river washing your clothes 🤣

Not grim, every two or three weeks is fine for one bed sheet used by clean adults to sleep on in pyjamas.

(The 'how often do you wash your towel/bra/sheets' threads appear so often on this site)

I don't need to use tea towels as I have a dishwasher, and haven't used a flannel since the 80s.
As I said, if the duvet cover doesn't fit in with the rest of the load it can wait till the next one, I have several.
Just the cheapest machine Argos sold at the time I bought it.

GrandHighPoohbah · 23/03/2025 20:57

I'm just here for the "one load every fortnight" debate. 😁

oviraptor21 · 23/03/2025 20:59

You are right OP.
Putting the bins out is the easiest chore.

Jalopy77 · 23/03/2025 20:59

Ilovecleaning · 23/03/2025 19:36

🙄 🙄🙄

You'd really roll those eyes if you grew up with washboard, tin tub, dolly and mangle! Closely followed by the infamous twin tub that took all day. And no tumble dryer or central heating.

Caterina99 · 23/03/2025 21:00

I don’t find it hard. It’s just boring and never ending. I’m pretty good with the washing and drying part, it’s the putting it away that I hate the most. And ironing. Plus DH has outdoor work wear that gets washed on a weekend that takes forever to dry. And then there’s the joy of school uniforms!

And what is it if you miss a day you suddenly have about 10 times as much the next day?

Growlybear83 · 23/03/2025 21:00

I’ve never really thought of washing and ironing as being a ‘mental load’ 😆. I do at least one load every other day and probably three loads over the weekend. I tend to save the ironing up and spend a couple of hours getting it all done on Saturday or Sunday in front of the TV, and I find it quite relaxing.

Sorting it into piles is the worst. The worst.

Absolute worst. But then pairing socks is also horrendous.

Moier · 23/03/2025 21:04

When l first got married l had a twin tub washing machine..now that definitely was a chore and half.. my first automatic was bloody brilliant that l went and bought my mum one too.. this was 1985.. so 40 years ago..
Today it's easy.. bung it in.. let it wash.. bung in tumbler.. take out and hang up or fold
Easy peasy.. even l can do it and I'm severely disabled.

I do 3-4 loads a day 🤦🏼‍♀️

Truetoself · 23/03/2025 21:20

If you keep everyone’s laundry separate and wash and dry eaxh individual’s laundry on the same day, you may find it easier to sort
