Hot cross buns

Just a light hearted question, do you eat your hot cross buns toasted or cold/as is? I've always toasted them and my friend looked at me like I'm crazy and said she'd never heard of toasting them.

You are being unreasonable... I eat them cold as is.
You are NOT being unreasonable...
Toasted is totally normal

I usually just warm in the microwave for 30s because I like them to not be crunchy, but they're definitely nicer warm!

I thought I was the only person in the world who microwaved them! When I tell people I prefer them microwaved to toasted they always look at me funny.

RaraRachael · 13/03/2025 10:45

Toasted with loads of butter.

I only ever buy traditional ones though. Yesterday in M and S I struggled to find a normal pack - blueberry, millionaire's, choc chip or whatever - just a big no!

Whatsherusername · 13/03/2025 10:48

I don't actually like them, DH ha them toasted with butter. At a family bbq last Easter future SIL proceeded to toast his hot cross bun on the bbq and use it as a bun for his burger and said it was very tasty, weirdo lol

Manzana · 13/03/2025 10:50

I've eaten them cold if they are fresh, but toasted is best with butter, and a slice of marzipan grilled on top

jellybe · 13/03/2025 10:51

Toasted. Lots of butter and a pinch of salt. With a big cup of tea! Absolutely bliss.

thinktwice36 · 13/03/2025 10:53

Don’t like them toasted. But must be super fresh, and don’t be mean with the (real please) butter.

don’t come at me with those fancy weird flavoured ones either. I do not want a chocolate/caramel/anything else variety.

When I was young, most shops would close for all or part of Good Friday. It was a great treat to join the early morning queue at the baker's and buy hot cross buns, fresh from the oven. Yes they were HOT, and still pleasantly warm by the time we got them home.

My experience too. And you could only buy them on that day so they were a real treat (not like the gloopy ones these days).

WinterBones · 13/03/2025 10:58

mostly cold, as is.. but i have been known to toast them. depends on my mood.

steppemum · 13/03/2025 10:59

alternative to toasting is popping them in the oven for a 10 minutes.
This is what we do when we are all going to have them for breakfast.

Then tear them open to reveal the soft inside
Wonderfully warm, butter melts beautifully, no toasty bits.

If toasted, then done under the grill, so just the cut side is toasted and not squashed into the toaster

and I'm firmly in the butter only camp

newsateleven · 13/03/2025 11:00

They're much better cold but they're fine hot as long as the raisins aren't burned.

Nothing worse than an overdone hot cross bun that's like a crumby brick with burned raisins.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 13/03/2025 11:01

47, never had one, but i would probably say toasted

DazzlingCuckoos · 13/03/2025 11:03

I mean the clue's in the title isn't it?!

DH insists on grilling hot cross buns so only the cut side gets toasted but I'll usually chuck them in the toaster.

Those raisins and sultanas are absolutely bloody gorgeous when warmed up - squidgy and delicious!

I keep toying with the idea of getting a toaster for the office kitchen, but know it would be me that ends up having to clean it to stop it becoming a fire hazard, but this thread is really, really making me want HCBs now!

Yes! Nearly bought some as they've conveniently placed them next to the queue in Sainsbury's the other day, but they were apple ones only!

Why mess with perfection?!

Confusedmermaid1 · 13/03/2025 11:05

Toasted always! Work did a coffee and cake morning for IWD and they had cold hot cross buns (no toaster) and I thought it was so bizarre but clearly there are people out there who would have still eaten them 😅
Also not opposed to some of the non-traditional flavours, Sainsbury’s do a lemon and white chocolate which is just heavenly

Toasted. With butter. And a slice of cheese. Trust me, game changer.

ooh, now you're talking. I like cheese with Christmas cake so will definitely be trying this. Thank you

Cold with butter, sticky and chewy 🤤. I'm a fan of buttered malt loaf so this tracks for me.

im a fan of buttered malt loaf too. No excuse for not toasting a hot cross bun🤣
Totally different textures.

Cheese??????

IamSallyBowles · 13/03/2025 11:22

No - I don't toast or eat cold - we warm them in the oven so they're hot and gooey on the inside

WellsAndThistles · 13/03/2025 11:23

Always toasted, very carefully though as the sugar makes them burn so quickly.

Personally think they would be too claggy to eat straight from the packet.

They do also make the best ever bread and butter pudding 😋

Iknowaboutpopular · 13/03/2025 11:24

BaronessMachiavelli · 13/03/2025 11:21

Cheese??????

You will not regret it.

Just had two, toasted with butter and cheese after being heavily influenced by this thread to drive to lidl and buy some so i can have my first hot cross buns of the year!

CrushingOnRubies · 13/03/2025 11:24

I was brought up to microwave them. Don't think my mum liked raisins in the toaster. Moved on with do and he was shocked by this.

Mach3 · 13/03/2025 11:25

Hot cross buns are for Good Friday only!

It irks me that seasonal foods have become a pretty much all-year-round thing.

(See also, mince pies and any egg-shaped chocolate).

Fruit bread and teacakes are available if you have a hankering.

WellsAndThistles · 13/03/2025 11:26

BaronessMachiavelli · 13/03/2025 11:21

Cheese??????

Try it, decent mature cheddar goes so well with anything in the Xmas cake flavour family 😀

Russiandollsaresofullofthemselves · 13/03/2025 11:27

Preference is toaster and buttered but I would also eat them straight out the packet. To make it top tier add a slice of cheese after it is toasted and buttered.

FuzzikinsPompombum · 13/03/2025 11:28

The correct way is to eat a cold one while you’re waiting for another one to toast 🤷‍♀️

This is why I usually don’t buy them - I’m a hot cross bun gannet 😳

I don’t eat butter but enjoy them with raspberry jam or almond butter (or both!). In the past I used to love them with Nutella.

Now I need to be strong enough to walk past them despite desperately wanting to try one with cheese as suggested by pp…
