Hot cross buns

Just a light hearted question, do you eat your hot cross buns toasted or cold/as is? I've always toasted them and my friend looked at me like I'm crazy and said she'd never heard of toasting them.

You are being unreasonable... I eat them cold as is.
You are NOT being unreasonable...
Toasted is totally normal

He promised never to do it again so I let it slide as he is generally a keeper.

Toasted. Butter. Cup of tea. I always eat loads at this time of year because in my humble opinion HCB should be a seasonal food like strawberries and asparagus so I refuse to eat them except around Easter.

Oh, and there is a special place in hell reserved for those HCB manufacturers who keep trying to force fancy and totally unnecessary flavours on to the unwitting public and gullible tourists. Just stop it, now.

Absolutely!

My people!❤

K0OLA1D · 13/03/2025 09:17

I've not voted as I eat them cold and toasted. No preference for either really. What ever I fancy at the time.

I did once. I stayed in a caravan for the weekend and they didn't have any cooking facilities but did have a small airfryer. It's perfect for any kind of toast but you need to keep a keen eye on time. It takes less time than you think!
For any other hard crust roll, it works great if you spritz it with a bit of water first as it helps to crisp up the crust while keeping the inside soft.

I recently realised that my airfryer is perfect for warming up croissants. 170 for three minutes.

Lorrymum · 13/03/2025 09:21

Not a huge fan until I discovered you could toast them. I still prefer a scone though!

Toasted is not good enough, I don't want the insides crispy.
Oven warmed is best, crispy outside, fluffy and warm enough to melt butter on the inside.

I've just remembered that my mother used to warm them in the oven but she would put them in a Pyrex casserole dish (I am a child of the 60s) with the lid on so the effect was more steamed buns than crispy ones. It did bring out the spices though. She stopped doing this in the heady days of the 70s when she acquired a toaster.

Toasted with butter. Heaven!

Moonmelodies · 13/03/2025 09:36

Toasted, buttered, then reassemble with bacon.

Cluckycluck · 13/03/2025 09:47

Toasted with butter always!

Moveoverdarlin · 13/03/2025 09:49

Clue’s in the name. I’d say ‘listen up Beryl, they’re not called cold cross buns are they babes???’

MrsSkylerWhite · 13/03/2025 09:56

Cold with butter and cheese.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 13/03/2025 10:00

Toasted, but only on one side (so split them and pop under a grill) or else heat in an oven.

The name is a giveaway - they're not called cold cross buns, or even just cross buns. They are supposed to be hot!

mindutopia · 13/03/2025 10:02

Always toast them, but you know when it’s hot cross buns season because the toaster keeps causing a smoke situation and nearly catching on fire. I do them in the oven if doing a load, but for just one, have to risk the toaster.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 13/03/2025 10:02

Tesco extra fruity are the way to go, (I haven't had a home-made one in years!!)

Depends what mood I'm in, but most of the time toasted under the grill with butter afterwards (my auntie grills them with the butter on) I do like them with a bit of cheddar and occasionally with strawberry jam and cheddar, but I think they're most hot cross bunny toasted Just with butter added after toasting!

Hoolahoophop · 13/03/2025 10:06

Toasted at home. Cold for picnic lunches. Kids prefer cold, I think because it takes the edge off the sweetness and makes them less rich.

Breadcat24 · 13/03/2025 10:10

Toasted all the way!
Your friend is a barbarian!

And also can we say traditional spiced not lemon, chocolate or caramel etc flavour

BarnacleBeasley · 13/03/2025 10:15

Untoasted is quite nice if they are very fresh (and/or home-made). I don't think you should eat them during Lent though (I am not religious and this is one of my only principles about anything).

saveforthat · 13/03/2025 10:16

When they are really fresh, gently warned in the oven. A few days old, toast them.

MellowPinkDeer · 13/03/2025 10:17

Oooh either. I love a hot cross bun

Ilovelowry · 13/03/2025 10:26

If I am going to bosch a load of calories on one which is rare, I prefer mine from the packet, slightly stodgy and claggy.

But fully appreciate it's normal to toast them op.

Cotonsugar · 13/03/2025 10:37

If they are fresh, then as they are with butter. Personally, I like the clagginess😂 a couple of days older, then toasted. I’ve seen people put them in the oven, but that seems a bit pointless to me, but each to their own😊

I eat them leading up to Easter but not actually at Easter because I’m fed up with them by then😂 I’m not religious at all as you can tell.
