Hot cross buns

Just a light hearted question, do you eat your hot cross buns toasted or cold/as is? I've always toasted them and my friend looked at me like I'm crazy and said she'd never heard of toasting them.

You are being unreasonable... I eat them cold as is.
You are NOT being unreasonable...
Toasted is totally normal

@Iknowaboutpopular which cheese?

Has anyone tried them in an airfryer?

I think untoasted bread is only acceptable when it is fresh from the oven or within 8h of baking. After that, it's toasted every time. I cannot think of a single bready item that I eat untoasted outside of this timeframe.

Couldn't agree more!

Cold with butter, sticky and chewy 🤤. I'm a fan of buttered malt loaf so this tracks for me.

I did once. I stayed in a caravan for the weekend and they didn't have any cooking facilities but did have a small airfryer. It's perfect for any kind of toast but you need to keep a keen eye on time. It takes less time than you think!
For any other hard crust roll, it works great if you spritz it with a bit of water first as it helps to crisp up the crust while keeping the inside soft.

EveryDayisFriday · 13/03/2025 07:56

But crumpets must be double toasted.

SoundedCat · 13/03/2025 07:57

IMO The best way to eat them is to slice the in half, toast them, drench them in butter and then use them to make a sandwich with a slice of ox tongue. Peak flavour combination!

I like cold buttered malt loaf, but just Can't see the appeal of a cold hot cross buns 🤔

HOT cross buns! Otherwise they’d just be cross buns and I’d be cross if I lost any opportunity for melty butter 😂
saying that, I don’t eat hot cross buns (nasty dried fruit 🤢) but others in my house do and they always toast them first.

Fortunately for you, there are many versions that don't have raisins/sultanas in them, like bramley apple ones, or salted caramel, or white chocolate and raspberry... it's a haven of hot cross bun joy out there

minnienono · 13/03/2025 07:59

Toasted with butter if shop bought. On the rare occasions I've made them we ate them warm from the oven tray

Cheddar. The fruit with the cheese chefs kiss

I'm also going to raise the cheese and tell everyone about hot cross buns...with jam. Oh yeah.

With ox tongue? Sounds like an interesting combination. I remember my Grandad having tongue sandwiches. I think I'll stick to butter and maybe push the boat out and add a bit of jam 😂
Edited for typo.

Goodness, surely they aren't hot cross buns, then, just fancy teacakes? From Wiki:

The bun marks the end of the season of Lent and different elements of the hot cross bun each have a specific meaning, such as the cross representing the crucifixion of Jesus, the spices inside signifying the spices used to embalm him and sometimes also orange peel reflecting the bitterness of his time on the cross.[6][7]

Definitely agree with jam, that mixed with melted butter is delicious.

Toasted, with butter and mature cheddar…

Blueuggboots · 13/03/2025 08:06

Or biscoff spread…although I prefer that on a scone….

I refer to all of the hot cross bun non-standard variants as “baked goods”, not hot cross buns. Got to maintain a certain level of pickiness about correct food types!

HalloumiFries · 13/03/2025 08:14

They were always cold when I was growing up. Mum and Dad both loved them and would eat one a day at this time of year. I did not see the appeal at all. Then I grew up and met DH who toasted, buttered and served with cheese and my life was changed even if my waistline would have preferred not to have had the revelation.

I've subsequently brought mum over to the toasty side. Dad always remained stubbornly committed to his way though.

Absolutely!

Texture is everything. Toasted.

They've all got dried fruit in - all the other stuff is in addition. P.S. The apple ones are manky.

There is no wrong way to eat a hot cross bun. Food of the gods. And the main reason I’ve got far too fat!

ThatsNotMyTeen · 13/03/2025 08:44

I prefer them cold

Rubyupbeat · 13/03/2025 08:45

Cold with butter, but teacakes warm with butter.

happysunr1se · 13/03/2025 08:54

Toasted is not good enough, I don't want the insides crispy.
Oven warmed is best, crispy outside, fluffy and warm enough to melt butter on the inside.

ADifferentSong · 13/03/2025 08:58

Each to their own. But toasting hot cross buns does bring out the spices!
