Running out of petrol

jmh740 · 07/03/2025 15:51

So after a discussion with Oh yesterday can I ask how many times you have ever run out of petrol and how many years you have been driving.

Person A run out once in 25 years of driving.

Person B run out 4 times in 30 years of driving.

Person A thinks B is irresponsible and most people have never run out. Person B thinks 4 times in 30 years is not much.

DP has once in 37 years of driving due to broken fuel gauge in company car. I’ve never run out in 34 years

NetZeroZealot · 07/03/2025 17:19

Never.

Have been an EV driver for 7 years, and never run out of battery either - and there are much fewer options!

MolkosTeenageAngst · 07/03/2025 17:19

5 years driving, I’ve frequently been in the red but never literally run out to the point the car hasn’t been able to continue running.

maximalistmaximus · 07/03/2025 17:20

Never.

Never heard of anyone else either.

Why would anyone when everyone has a fuel gauge?
I've been driving 20 years.

Justcallmebebes · 07/03/2025 17:20

30+ years and have never run out

ChompandaGrazia · 07/03/2025 17:21

33 years of driving and never ran out. I got close a couple of times though. I have an electric now which it a whole different ball game.

Ionut · 07/03/2025 17:22

32 years, never, close call with the blockades c2000 and the fuel madness from a few years ago. Had to make alternative plans for travel, as I was going to wait it out, then go to get petrol. But never ran out.

ReignOfError · 07/03/2025 17:22

I’ve been driving for 43 years - as much as 20,000 miles a year for almost half of that - and I’ve never run out.

Wendolino · 07/03/2025 17:23

45 years, never run out

Ionut · 07/03/2025 17:23

My husband puts some tape over the fuel gauge, so it looks like it's empty at 1/4 or thereabouts.

BendingSpoons · 07/03/2025 17:23

Never! Fuel light only comes on a couple of times a year and then it's promptly to the garage.

Embarrassinglyuseless · 07/03/2025 17:24

I’m really really shit-at-life a lot of the time and in all my decades of driving I have never run out of petrol. Just asked DH and he confirms same. No need. Just fill up once the car gets to a quarter left…

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 07/03/2025 17:24

31 years, never. We had a close call in France when the fuel strikes were on. Think we managed to make it on fumes.

ttcat37 · 07/03/2025 17:24

I’ve run out twice in 25 years, but I was driving a car with no fuel gauge.

SardinesOnGingerbread · 07/03/2025 17:24

Huckyfell · 07/03/2025 15:59

36 years and never run out
Ds1 10 years, run out twice
Ds2 8 years, run out once.
Very oddly, it was the fuel gauge that was faulty all times... I swear they both said the same even though they were in different cars

To be fair, if you're going to let a 10 year old and an eight year old borrow your car, that's what's going to happen.

user1471538283 · 07/03/2025 17:24

Despite my DF and my bf drumming it into me that my tank should be full and my trying to make sure it's at least half full I came very close to running out once in 20 years of driving. The first petrol station has run out so I had to wing it to the next one driving nearly in tears. I'm never doing that again, it was so stressful.

thecatdidit · 07/03/2025 17:25

Oh my god, I've just worked out I've been driving for 45years! Never ran out of petrol, touch wood.

zoemum2006 · 07/03/2025 17:26

Never in the last 30 years.... about 4 times in my first few years of driving.

I used to think it was hilarious as a student to see how long I could drive around my uni town on empty. I'd have a petrol can in my boot and just walk to the nearest garage to get some.

When I met my DH I nearly gave him a heart attack (he filled up his WHOLE TANK like a grown up - not £5 at a time!)

Newtrix · 07/03/2025 17:26

21 years and once as a teenager. 4 times just seems irresponsible.

Velmy · 07/03/2025 17:26

Never in 23 years.

Came close once, absolutely bizarre circumstances - two motorway petrol stations were out of service and then got caught up in a massive diversion down country lanes in the middle of the night.

Still made it thankfully!

follygirl · 07/03/2025 17:26

35 years, never run out

Poetnojo · 07/03/2025 17:27

Driving around 20 years and have never ran out of petrol, Dh Driving around 15 years and also has never ran out.

Redpeach · 07/03/2025 17:27

So you're basically saying op is shitter at life than you?

PandaTime · 07/03/2025 17:28

20 years, never run out. And I have ADHD! But thankfully my paranoia about forgetting and not noticing means I top up as soon as it drops to two bars.

Flatbellyfella · 07/03/2025 17:28

Only once in 62 years of driving; after some bastard had siphoned out my newly filled motorcycle petrol tank overnight ,a long walk to a petrol station.
