Running out of petrol

jmh740 · 07/03/2025 15:51

So after a discussion with Oh yesterday can I ask how many times you have ever run out of petrol and how many years you have been driving.

Person A run out once in 25 years of driving.

Person B run out 4 times in 30 years of driving.

Person A thinks B is irresponsible and most people have never run out. Person B thinks 4 times in 30 years is not much.

30 years and never

Hatty65 · 07/03/2025 16:30

40 years. Never. My dad told me that you shouldn't drive it on the sludge at the bottom because it's not good for the engine and trained me (even when skint) to put petrol in once it dipped below the quarter tank mark.

And before the light came on.

Zingy123 · 07/03/2025 16:30

30 years driving and never run out. I never leave it that low.

RoastDinnerSmellsNice · 07/03/2025 16:31

41 years and never run out!

ICanTellYouMissMe · 07/03/2025 16:32

Never. Although I did once make it to the garage with 3 miles left in the tank.

Buddysno1fan · 07/03/2025 16:32

Twice in 30 years, not in the last 28/29 years though. The first time was within a couple of months of passing my test, the second I was on my way to the petrol station and didn’t quite make when I was a student.

BeachRide · 07/03/2025 16:34

30+ years. Never. Remember putting a whole £5 in a few times as a poor student though!

chipsandpeas · 07/03/2025 16:35

26 years of driving and can recall 3 times ive ran out

Tagyoureit · 07/03/2025 16:35

12 years driving, never ran out of petrol but did get down to my last 5 miles in the new electric car last year 😬

That was bit squeaky bum time but thankfully I was close to home, I've never let the car get below 20 miles now though.

thaegumathteth · 07/03/2025 16:35

24 years driving, never.

Vaxtable · 07/03/2025 16:36

Never driving 48years

RedPony1 · 07/03/2025 16:36

23 years driving, never, not even close.

Icanttakethisanymore · 07/03/2025 16:36

Once in 22 years. 4 times in 30 years is not a lot but equally I'm surprised anyone would let it happen more than once (twice at a push) because it's such a fag to break down.

HowToSaveAWife · 07/03/2025 16:38

20 years, never run out. BUT I have had the fuel level low alert a few times but would still get to a petrol station and fill up straight away.

Could be to do with sensor placement within the tank - so when it is showing half it is actually a bit less (especially if more of your driving is up and down slopes) - it may feel like it goes down quicker because when the gague shows half, there is actually less than half left

No, because as I said, I base this not on the speed it goes down but on how many miles I get vs how much petrol I put in. So if I fill the car completely. When I NEXT fill the car, I look at how many litres I put in and how many miles I have done. That gives me an efficiency level ie how many km per litre (or miles per gallon if you were using that - I think in km/litre)

So broadly, the less petrol I put in, the better my km/l ratio (as a rule - type of driving definitely impacts things eg motorway vs close to home and also, I'm learning, weather - colder it is the worse it is).

thesugarbumfairy · 07/03/2025 16:40

Never. 32 years.

4 times is daft. Surely after the first time the person is more careful? Wait til they get an EV... they will be permanently at the side of the road as the range is far less and put heating etc on and range gets reduced more quickly too.

NiceProblems · 07/03/2025 16:40

6 Years and never.

gano · 07/03/2025 16:40

I've never ran out of petrol in 18 years of driving.

IAmNeverThePerson · 07/03/2025 16:42

30 years and never run out (though cut it fine frequently)

Dogsintheyard · 07/03/2025 16:42

39 yrs, never.
A is as bad as B

pilates · 07/03/2025 16:42

38 years driving and once when I was young and foolish

Miaowzabella · 07/03/2025 16:43

I've never run out of petrol, though I have come close to it a couple of times in 17 years. Person B is a bit slow on the uptake I think.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 07/03/2025 16:43

30 years, never run out.

Ilovegermany · 07/03/2025 16:45

Never in 33 years. Ran on fumes a few months ago from Belgium into Luxembourg. No petrol stations for ages as Luxembourg is much cheaper and no one would use them.
