Running out of petrol

jmh740 · 07/03/2025 15:51

So after a discussion with Oh yesterday can I ask how many times you have ever run out of petrol and how many years you have been driving.

Person A run out once in 25 years of driving.

Person B run out 4 times in 30 years of driving.

Person A thinks B is irresponsible and most people have never run out. Person B thinks 4 times in 30 years is not much.

I think maybe once, when I was young, poor and bought knackered old cars.

There were a few occasions when XH1 and I would nearly coast into a petrol station on fumes, a wing and a prayer though.

My car now politely informs me that I'm running low and would I like it to direct me to the nearest petrol station, which is nice.

Astrak · 07/03/2025 16:58

Never, in ffty-eight years of motoring. I've had some big, juicy fast cars in my time and I've always watched the fuel gauge like a hawk.
I've got a small hot hatch now, and it does about 45-50mpg, depending on where I'm going and how often I'm going there. I never go below a quarter full on the fuel guage.

Thisismetooaswell · 07/03/2025 16:58

40 years and run out once - when the petrol gauge was broken and the garage wanted me to take it in to be fixed with the tank as empty as possible. I succeeded!

DarkNovembernights · 07/03/2025 16:58

50 years. Never.

Starseeking · 07/03/2025 16:59

I've been driving 27 years, I've never run out of petrol.

I don't understand why anyone wouldn't put the petrol in as soon as the warning light came on (assuming they left the petrol indicator to get that low in the first place!).

Kaleidoscope101 · 07/03/2025 17:00

Nearly 30 years driving. Never run out but then I am one of those people who fill up when I get down to half a tank 🙈

Kevinbaconsrealwife · 07/03/2025 17:01

Driving 35 years, happened once when I was 19….. opposite a petrol station as luck would have it….

zingally · 07/03/2025 17:01

22 years of driving.

Never run out, and I've only had the petrol warning light come on twice in that time.
I run on the philosophy that I should always have enough petrol to cope with an emergency situation, without my first thought being, "Oh shit, petrol!"
I start actively planning my next trip to the petrol station when I hit about 1/4 of a tank.

EverythingElseIsTaken · 07/03/2025 17:01

I’ve been driving over 33 years - never run out.
DH been driving nearly 40 years - never run out.

Howmanycatsistoomany · 07/03/2025 17:01

30 years and never actually run out but when still living at home my Dad would tell me off for running on fumes 😅

namechangetheworld · 07/03/2025 17:01

Almost twenty years of driving and I've never run out, which is absolutely shocking as I'm horribly disorganised (and poor) and CONSTANTLY let it run down to the last few drops. I've been running on fumes more times than I can count. Fairly sure my petrol light is on more than it's off.

EarsLikeAFennecFox · 07/03/2025 17:02

33 years, never

KickHimInTheCrotch · 07/03/2025 17:02

Maybe twice in my first year of driving 30 years ago. However I enjoy the jeapordy of leaving it as low as possible before I fill up. A sort of game of chicken with myself. That probably says all you need to know about me.

Sherararara · 07/03/2025 17:02

never in 27 years of driving. Because you know, they have a gauge and warning lights to help you out….

Topseyt123 · 07/03/2025 17:03

Never. I've been driving for 40 years now. I never run it below quarter.

DH has run out before, many years ago when he was a daft young thing who never bothered to look at a petrol gauge. Once was in the middle of the Dartford Tunnel, long before they QE2 Bridge was built. He's much more careful and aware now and it hasn't happened for many years.

CrimsonVioletTeal · 07/03/2025 17:03

35 years, never run out. I've come close twice, once when the garage I expected to fill up at was unexpectedly closed and the next garage was a further 20 odd miles away.

madnessitellyou · 07/03/2025 17:03

28 years and have never run out.

Unless you count the time when my petrol tank crumbled completely and an entire tankful ended up on the driveway!

Supporthelittleguys · 07/03/2025 17:04

16 years & once. On the motorway 😳 police officer let me off (it’s a criminal offence) because I was a dumb 18 year old.

BruceAndNosh · 07/03/2025 17:05

50 years... Never.
But did have to blag the contents of the someone's emergency petrol can when sitting in a humongous traffic jam on the M25. But I was young and pretty back then and driving an open top sports car so could get away with it.
I have arrived home in my electric car with Zero miles of range showing on display...

onlyhereforthechaletschool · 07/03/2025 17:05

Driving 38 years this month. The only time I’ve ever run out of petrol I collected a new car from the dealer. They told me there was enough petrol in the car to get me to the filling station round the corner. There wasn’t … there were temporary traffic lights at some roadworks and I obviously used more fuel that they’d anticipated waiting for them to change… the guys doing the roadworks pushed me to the filling station …

Never been back to Motorpoint for a car!!

Officially that should be counted as you were driving a shit car

MargaretThursday · 07/03/2025 17:06

Sort of never.
What I mean is with our previous car, the end of the hose or whatever into the tank shifted to be firmly at one end, so if you were low and went down a steep hill it sometimes cut out. It wasn't a major problem as you just drifted to the bottom then restarted the engine.
Other than that, no.

My parents fairly dramatically ran out at midnight on the way back from a wedding in the early 80s. But in their defence the gauge had broken, so they couldn't tell.

SparklyBrickViper · 07/03/2025 17:06

Once. Got lost on a detour.
23 years.

Oioisavaloy27 · 07/03/2025 17:07

Never run out of petrol.

howarddonaldssink · 07/03/2025 17:07

Never. Don't know anyone it's happened to either except it happened once to my dad when I was a kid.
