Running out of petrol

jmh740 · 07/03/2025 15:51

So after a discussion with Oh yesterday can I ask how many times you have ever run out of petrol and how many years you have been driving.

Person A run out once in 25 years of driving.

Person B run out 4 times in 30 years of driving.

Person A thinks B is irresponsible and most people have never run out. Person B thinks 4 times in 30 years is not much.

22 years never.
Dh 23 years never

0 in 35 years

Jayne35 · 08/03/2025 20:48

Both DH and I are same age, 32 years driving and never ran put of petrol. I do think it's irresponsible as there is no need to ever run out.

Agree, and everyone's so proud

Well it's pretty stupid at least.

3 times in 30 years - all three in a car that had a non functioning petrol gauge. I used to use the trip meter as it would do "about" 330 miles to a tank.

"About" failed me a few times!

Never since I've had a car with a functioning fuel gauge:-)

MummyChocolateMonster · 08/03/2025 20:53

32 years and done it twice, but both times were over 20 years ago.

Not your fault with a faulty fuel gage though, to run out for any other reason is just daft.

35 years (if I include the years before I learnt to drive a car and had motorcycles) - never ran out of petrol

Growlybear83 · 08/03/2025 21:06

I've never run out in over 40 years of driving and neither has anyone else I know.

MarioLink · 08/03/2025 21:07

20 years, never run out but it was very close once.

30 years and never run out.

Same.

Is the gauge broken?

TheMauveBeaker · 08/03/2025 21:12

Nearly 40 years and never.

NameChanges123 · 08/03/2025 21:12

Driving 29 years and never run out.

stargirl1701 · 08/03/2025 21:30

31 years. Never.

Dogsbreath7 · 08/03/2025 21:30

Never actually run out but have arrived home on the red light then picked up a can of fuel in another car.

like putting the bins and recycling out I do think filling cars up is a man’s job 🫣. (On basis everything else falls to me).

Lassango · 08/03/2025 21:37

If you have a working fuel gauge but still run out of fuel then you are a moron.

rainbowsparkle28 · 08/03/2025 21:38

10 years driving and once. Fortunately I was about 100m from the petrol station forecourt but stupidly decided to park up to drop some bits in charity donation bins before filling up and the car then, erm, didn’t turn on….😌🙄 Very aware I was pushing my luck. I have vowed to myself never again ever since!

Londonrach1 · 08/03/2025 21:41

35 years and not yet... although came close last week due to an hour traffic queue on a 5 min journey. I had 5 miles left but got to Tesco. .never going to get that close again. Dh says in his over 40 years his parents ran out of petrol once, he never run out and my parents never run out....

Emanresu52 · 08/03/2025 21:46

40 years and never. That's what the little light is for.

RawBloomers · 08/03/2025 21:54

38 years driving, never run out. Was in a friend’s car when he ran out once. Apparently he did it so often he kept a petrol can in the car so he could hitch to a petrol station, pick up some petrol and fill up! Added nearly two hours to our 30 minute journey.

I tend to agree that it’s somewhat irresponsible, though understand the difficulties of trying to make too little money cover too much week.

DoraSpenlow · 08/03/2025 21:56

53 years. Never.

FlatWhite78 · 08/03/2025 21:59

35 years of driving, never run out of petrol. If my car has less than 40 miles of range then I’m straight to the petrol station. I think it’s really irresponsible that anyone can manage to do so.

20yo DD however must think that a magical petrol fairy exists.. we share a car at the moment, she will happily drive home on 10 miles of range and leave it as a lovely surprise for me to get into the next morning!

Yourcatisnotsorry · 08/03/2025 22:11

25 years me and OH have never run out. I don’t know anyone who has said they have. 4x is a problem.

Panterusblackish · 08/03/2025 22:14

Never in 30 years, but I do like to play chicken with the remaining range.

I've no idea what's wrong with me, I'm normally risk averse 😂

Airspice · 08/03/2025 22:30

35 years and once in my idiotic early days of driving (as in I was young and scatty, not a crap driver!)
