Running out of petrol

jmh740 · 07/03/2025 15:51

So after a discussion with Oh yesterday can I ask how many times you have ever run out of petrol and how many years you have been driving.

Person A run out once in 25 years of driving.

Person B run out 4 times in 30 years of driving.

Person A thinks B is irresponsible and most people have never run out. Person B thinks 4 times in 30 years is not much.

I've run out 4 times, at least. Mostly when I was young and irresponsible (as in, didn't have any responsibilities, such as a job or kids).
The last one was when I did have responsibilities, but it was a genuinely difficult situation where everything was against us.

I'm a risk taker, though! It would be boring if we were all Careful Crispin's.

JackGrealishsCalves · 07/03/2025 23:17

35 years , happened twice.
Annoyingly the first time I was on my way to the petrol station but didn't quite make it!

barumph · 07/03/2025 23:45

36 years, never ran out. Have once put petrol in a diesel car though....

NotVeryFunny · 08/03/2025 00:11

A few times when I was younger and had no money and used to put £5 or £10 in at a time. Plus cars back then didn't tell you exactly how many miles you had left, and you can run on fumes for a while! Not happened since then.

NotVeryFunny · 08/03/2025 00:14

Struggling to understand why some people on this thread seem to think it's some sort of moral failing to run out of fuel?!? 😂😂😂.

TeenLifeMum · 08/03/2025 00:18

Once in 25 years but in my defence the fuel gauge wouldn’t drop below 16 miles left and we live near a petrol station so I didn’t think 16 miles was an issue… dh knew 16 was the lowest it went and never mentioned it. I was mid parking outside our house and managed to block 3 drives (weird corner plot layout). Thankfully neighbours were lovely and I used my own car to go and buy a can and fill it to sort. Dh - never.

maddening · 08/03/2025 01:27

30 years, never run out

OliveWah · 08/03/2025 01:29

Twice. Once when I was 17 and had only been driving for around 6 weeks, I thought it was ok as the fuel level indicator was still ever so slightly above the "empty" line, and not touching it. It was not ok, and my Dad had to come and rescue me. The second time I was 34, and my car at the time had a display telling you how many miles of fuel were remaining. All well and good until it broke and I didn't realise until the car juddered to a halt on the school run!

Not sure what the hysterics are about but I guess we all have different opinions on what’s insanely funny.

Nevertheless I haven’t seen any evidence of people claiming it’s a ‘moral failing’ more it’s just stupid given cars tell you how much fuel you have. If you know how far you’re travelling it’s just basic maths (cue loads of posters outraged and claiming they are dyslexic) and adulting to have fuel to get there.

If someone told me they ran out of petrol more than once, I don’t think I’d be laughing or thinking it was ditzy cute, I’d wonder if they were a bit dim or be concerned they had serious money problems where they were putting in a fiver of petrol on payday.

Lovehascomeandgone · 08/03/2025 18:08

27 years and never run out, it’s kind of stupid to do so given there are clear indicators on cars. Having said that I have had a near miss when I was stuck in an accident on the motorway for hours on end.

Duechristmas · 08/03/2025 18:22

Never in 32 years of driving and I take it down to the red/zero every time much to my husband's horror.

Ap42 · 08/03/2025 18:23

Never in 25 years of driving. I get anxious if I'm at a quarter of a tank, so never go below that.

wizzbitt · 08/03/2025 19:12

I've never run out. To be fair I started driving properly a few years ago at 45 and the main journeys were with kids. But I've been on about 3 long journeys with DP and then baby where the petrol light was red. That always stressed me out. I now have slight panic attacks when the petrol gauge is down to 3 bars! So it's unlikely to happen🤦🏿‍♀️

I’ve never once run out of petrol in 24 years of driving. I got very close once but still made it to the petrol station.

jrc1071 · 08/03/2025 19:31

40 years driving never run out.

JollyRoseBiscuit · 08/03/2025 19:35

Started driving at 17. Probably about ten times in the past 14 years. Is what it is. Money is tight. Places to try and be. My friend won't drive below half a tank though...
What's a little risk....

Sinkintotheswamp · 08/03/2025 19:37

27yrs and never ran out.
Only one very near miss, I hold the wriggly isolated Cornish roads partially responsible for that.

pollymere · 08/03/2025 19:40

The only time I have run out of fuel was when I'd just bought a car and was trying to get it to the nearest decent fuel station to put petrol in! Luckily my DH could walk there and grab some fuel.

I think not running out of fuel comes under "adulting". I've got close (petrol station turned off the pumps just as I got there being my most close call) but have managed to find one and re-fuel. It is worth noting that I have achieved this whilst only using Shell V-power in my car.

Theoriginalmrscillianmurphy · 08/03/2025 19:42

23 years and only once.

I was a few meters from the pump and another customer gave me a push and we laughed about it.

MoonWoman69 · 08/03/2025 19:54

34 years and never once run out of fuel. The tank on mine never gets below a quarter anyway. It's ridiculous to run out of fuel when you have a bloody gauge!

BigCheese24 · 08/03/2025 20:18

Not only have I never run out of fuel, I've never even heard of anyone doing this! I had no idea people done this!?

PetuniaT · 08/03/2025 20:30

I've never run out of petrol in 50 years of driving. You must be pretty stupid not to be aware of roughly how much fuel is left in the petrol tank let alone ignore the fuel gauge, the low fuel light, the low fuel alarm and the written warning on the dashboard which intermittently flashes up over the speedometer.

Fairyliz · 08/03/2025 20:34

45 years and never. Isn’t that what the gauge is for?

Agree, and everyone's so proud

Nickisli1 · 08/03/2025 20:40

Never in 25 years!
